Langer Trophy Report:

What better way to finish off an undefeated season of dominance than to take the lead on the siren with an almost impossible finish.

Reaching out over the line was Ipswich’s Oliva Iaulualo to win it for his side.

You had a sense, down 16-0 that Ipswich had it in them to somehow claw back and come up with something at the end. And that is exactly what they did.

But, let’s set the record straight. Marsden are contenders. They are steadily climbing the ladder to the finals. Do not count them out, with the best of their form coming at just the right time.

Teapo Stoltman scored the first of the day for Marsden. His brilliance in the right corner, one of three cracking tries scored by the home side on their charge towards a 16-0 lead.

Their second try was something else. It was a spell of magic casted by Tigers contracted Chris Faagutu. This passage of play shows you everything you need to know about Marsden’s Australian Schoolboy.

Faagutu found Te Anau Graham Papalii bursting through the line, followed the play, ended up with it again and found hooker Jacob Tinsley tearing through on his inside.

No amount of praise could do the Marsden boys justice with this one. You have to see for yourself.

After going into the break 10-0 down, Ipswich needed to regroup and conjure up what they’ve been renowned for all season—producing a second-half surge.

But, a comeback would have to wait with Marsden wing Haizyn Mellars scoring minutes into the second stanza on the back of a super kick chase.

Ipswich, now down 16-0, knew what flip to switch in order to swing momentum their way.

It was a fending Tre Fotu who gave Ipswich everything they needed to get their attack rolling.

Fotu was unstoppable close to the line and finally got his side on the board.

What followed was pure brilliance.

Aussie Schoolboy Gabriel Satrick sent it out to Caleb Jackson, who had flying finisher Kulu Baruani on his right.

Baruani went horizontal in order to finish off this try in the right corner and before Marsden could stop and think, Ipswich were within six.

Moments later they were within two, thanks to a close range rampage by Fotu for his second of the day.

Five-eighth James Frazer was a goalpost away from equalising the scores, but it wasn’t to be.

With the clock dwindling down, Ipswich’s hopes looked doomed.

But, cometh the hour, cometh big Oliva Iaulualo for 2022’s best game winner.

On the siren for the last play of the game, down 16-14, came a heroic No.12 reaching over the try line and planting down that ball. What a way to finish.

Ipswich, snatching a 20-16 victory at the death.

Walters Cup report:

The Marsden SHS Year 10’s have equalised the day’s scores at one-a-piece leading into the Langer Trophy with a convincing 24-6 victory over Ipswich SHS.

Marsden dominated through the middle, out wide, and were the hungrier team. They had a side of execution to their attack today.

Their backline moves were smooth and with limited mistakes, were rarely on the back foot.

Marsden’s unsung hero wore jersey No.6, with a calm and collected play style and a ferocious fend.

He was their first tryscorer, before the wing wearing jersey No.2 pushed Marsden in front further.

Ipswich halfback Tahj Pagett scored Ipswich’s only try of the day to give his team a glimmer of hope when down 14-0.

Unfortunately for the Ipswich Year 10’s, they just couldn’t find a way through Marsden’s brick wall defence.

The Marsden second rower, wearing jersey No.11, was next to strike for the home side early in the second stanza.

The Marsden youngster made it 20-6 with an unstoppable surge at the line.

A well-deserved double for Marsden No.2 came in the final stages of the game.

Soaring down the left edge went the agile wing, before weaving his way through the last line of the Ipswich defence to score.

Scoring five tries to Ipswich’s one, the young men of Marsden finished off their last home fixture of the season in style.

Langer Reserve report:

A contender for Langer reserve game of the season has unfolded, with Ipswich just poking their noses in front in the final five, to come away 26-18 winners.

A Joven Gyemore masterclass and a Jacobi Shaw show saw the visitors pull away.

Ipswich wing Joven Gyemore is at the peak of his powers. The Cherbourg speedster does what he always does which is open the scoring in flying fashion.

He sliced through the Marsden defence and that was game over.

Marsden No.5 equalised the scores at 4-4 with a try in the right corner, following simple through the hands play by the backline.

Some Marsden magic down the left edge saw the home side push ahead 10-4, 15 minutes into the affair.

An incredible offload from the No.4 over the back of an Ipswich defender gifted the No.2 a four-pointer in the corner.

A blitz down the left touchline by Jacobi Shaw led to Ipswich’s next try to level the scores at 10-10 going into the break.

With a Gyemore gift to centre Jeriah Vagana, Shaw was put into space. It was the support play on the inside by halfback Lesayne Tuiasau that saw him scoop up and score a long pass from Shaw back into the middle of the field.

Guess who scored the first in the second? Gyemore.

Dazzling footwork and pace left his defender in two minds. That’s another double for Gyemore. It’s becoming a normality now.

If you are talking about the best wingers in the Langer Res and Langer Trophy competition, it is only fair Gyemore’s name is in the thick of it.

Marsden hit back to make it 14-14. A brilliantly orchestrated play from Marsden saw the fullback send a superb cut out pass to the No.2 who aced a timely pop pass back to the No.4 in support on the inside.

It wasn’t long before Gyemore put his mark on the game.

With two unbelievable offloads in the same set, Gyemore just kept applying the pressure. His second of the two, resulting in a fantastic try by Shaw.

Shaw, through the hands of Vagana, somehow planted down the ball before being taken out. Shaw slotted the conversion from the far left touchline.

Ipswich didn’t hold the 20-14 lead for long, with the Marsden No.5 drawing his boys a step closer at 18-20.

Take a guess who gave Ipswich the upper hand at 26-18.

For his third try of the day it was Mr. Joven Gyemore ducking, weaving and diving his way in for yet another spectacular solo effort.

And that was all she wrote, The whistle blowing with the Ipswich Langer reserve team ahead 26-18.
