The Charters Towers school sealed their fate late in the first half when a line break and subsequent 60 metre sprint from halfback Mathias Santo-Hero moved them in front 16-4, a hill too big for their Hervey Bay rivals to climb.
Columba are now champions of their North Queensland independent schools competition, division two of the Confraternity Shield and the Schoolboys Trophy, marking a year to remember for a team boasting just six Year 12 students.
The future is bright.
Columba CC head coach Rohan Dixon said the group had been outstanding all year.
“They pretty well won everything they’ve been in and they’ve all learned,” he said.
“We have some great players and young talent coming through and they’ve learned from the senior boys.
“I am looking forward to their development in future years as well.
“The Year 12 boys (Assariah Lenoy Sam, NaQarne Oui, Ben Simpson, Mathias Santo-Hero, Angus Ford and Brady Horan) were outstanding today and that was their last game for the school. They were the best players and their work ethic paved the way.”
Columba, in their bright red jerseys, led 16-4 at the break after Cowboys contracted fullback Assariah Lenoy Sam began proceedings with a four-pointer.
Xavier responded shortly after though when high-flying lock Boedie Dwight plucked a Zac Bennett cross-field kick out of the air and planted it down.
A response came from Columba centre Jerremy Singleton-Hite, before Santi-Hero stamped his mark on the match with a scintillating individual try which showcased his step and speed.
For Columba, Santi-Hero’s kicking and passing was elite, showcased best by a cut-out ball to bullocking centre NaQarne Oui who crossed the line untouched to put the result beyond doubt.
In the forwards, second rower Max Campbell was evasive with his carries and was the king of post contact metres.
For Xavier Catholic College, who refused to give up the fight and crossed late in the match, there were strong efforts abound.
High praise to fullback Preston King, halfback Bennett and lock Dwight, who was key to their late fightback.
The Hervey Bay school was also well serviced by second rowers Declan Fury and Jamall Nelson, who were relentless across the entire match.
Preview: Columba determined to cap break out year
Columba Catholic College are one win away from capping off an amazing year with a trio of titles.
The Charters Towers school has punched well above their weight in 2023 with the help of a couple of outstanding players in halfback Mathias Santo-Hero and fullback Assariah Lenoy, who recently signed a contract with the Cowboys.
They are already champions of their local North Queensland competition and division two of the Confraternity Shield. Now they face Xavier Catholic College from Hervey Bay in Tuesday’s Queensland NRL Trophy final.

Xavier have enjoyed a breakout year theemselves after finishing runners up in division three of the Confraternity Shield and toppling Chinchilla SHS and Pimpama SSC on their way to this final.
The game will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV, kicking off at 12.50pm from Totally Workwear Stadium in Brisbane.
Columba coach Rohan Dixon said his boys had been putting in extra training shifts to make sure they’re ready to go.
“The only concern I have is we haven’t played footy for four weeks now, being the end of the season. They’ve trained well though, which is all you can do,” Dixon said.
“They’ve all bought into the fitness aspect, just to stay in a bit of nick after finishing with their club commitments.
“We’ve been pretty lucky all year really, apart from one or two injuries during the season, but we’ve had the same squad the whole way through, which has probably been to our advantage. All of them are fit and ready to go.”
Columba cruised past Bentley Park (44-14) and Sarina SHS (32-0), with the electrifying Lenoy scoring a hat-trick in each game, while Santo-Hero ran in a double against Sarina.
But Dixon said he was expecting a tough challenge from Xavier Catholic College.
“They’ve done really well this year and they’ve improved, definitely, from where they started, so they’ll be formidable opponents,” Dixon said.
“They’re coming off the back of a bit of form so we’re under no illusions that we’re going to have a fair game ahead of us.”
With only six year 12 players in the champion side, the future is bright for Columba Catholic College’s rugby league program.
