Ipswich SHS returned to where their unbeaten sweep to the National Schoolboy Cup started last year with a bounce-back display at the North Ipswich Reserve on Wednesday.

After falling 34-16 to Keebra last week, a dominant 32-10 win over Redcliffe SHS was just the response champion coach Josh Bretherton was looking for.

“It is relieving to get a win and to get that underway,” he said.

“I think it’s relieving for the boys as well because even though we’re not saying they are compared to last year… you can see they are putting internal pressure on themselves to be brilliant. They are working hard but them getting a win and being able to enjoy that and know they are capable and to stress less. That will be good for them.”

“It’s an exciting moment for anyone to get to that level. They want to get to the Langer Trophy and play and then get a win. They were very excited.”

Ipswich came with all the fire and intensity that was a hallmark of their championship campaign in 2023.

It was a performance full of enthusiasm, intensity and physicality. Ipswich looked dangerous from the outset.

Leading the way was lock Jack Laing who bent the Redcliffe defence back with every carry, pushing through big collisions, and was rewarded with a try-scoring double.

Wingers Anton Naiyep and Xavier Kirk refused to take a backward step in their own red zone, getting the Ipswich side on the front foot at the start of every set.

While Dominique Sandow showed all of the tricks in his bag as he glided effortlessly from sideline to sideline, mesmerising the opposition troops.

Redcliffe had come out of the gates full of intent, and even scored the opening try through hooker Hayden Potts, but from there it was one-way traffic.

PREVIEW: Redcliffe determined to step it up a gear against defending champs

Senior head coach Jay Wilkinson knows Redcliffe is capable of a better 60-minute performance - and he expects Ipswich to be on the receiving end of it on Wednesday.

Redcliffe began their 2023 Langer Trophy campaign with a 34-20 defeat at the hands of Mabel Park SHS last week. Defending champions Ipswich also lost - 34-18 to Keebra Park.

Wilkinson said there was still a good vibe among the playing group and they had ‘quickly shifted their focus to our match on Wednesday.’

“I think we completed really well (against Mabel Park). When we played the way we trained and stuck to our structure, we were probably on top,” he said.

“Once we strayed away from it, we gave Mabel Park a bit of a chance to assert their dominance. They probably had a really good 10 minutes, which unfortunately knocked us out of the game.

“Fatigue in the first match was also a factor as it was a really high standard game, but we know what we can achieve if we play our style.

“The boys were naturally disappointed after the match, but they’ve quickly shifted their focus.

“Ipswich will be hungry to bounce back, too, but I think if we play the same way we opened the first 15 to 20 minutes last week and stick to that for a longer period of the match, we’ll win.”

He said he was looking forward to a standout performance from No.7 Jayden Evans, who partners John Fineanganofo in the halves.

“I think he’s ready to step up and assert a bit more dominance on the match,” he said.

“I know he’ll be keen for round two, so if he can get stuck in early, kick well and get his hands on the footy, it’ll go a long way to helping us over the line.”
