Some electric early hands from Wavell’s left side meant spectators didn’t have to wait long for the first points of the Langer Trophy game, with the try being scored by Jared Horne and converted by Zac Herdegen.

Herdegen added to his points tally, throwing a dummy close to the line and strolling over after 15 minutes before Wavell captain Lauloto Salei crashed over to extend the scoreline to 18-0.

An excellent 50m break from Caloundra fullback Toby Irvine saw the Seahawks find some good field position, but a costly error quickly resulted in Wavell getting back on the front foot.

Another Wavell try just before halftime to Harry Hill saw the teams head into the sheds 24-0.

An early second-half Wavell try to Kobi Floro was followed up by his second of the afternoon to extend the lead to 36-0.

A breakthrough on the halfway line from Caloundra’s Zac Garton was enough to draw the fullback and pass to winger Tristan Roselt for the Seahawks to find their way onto the scoreboard.

Hooker Jai Camilleri added to Wavell’s scoreline before some slick hands from Caloundra’s Tully McLellan and Zac Garton resulted in Brooklenn Mundraby-Grogan finding the line in the corner.

The match ended 42-10 in favour of Wavell SHS.

WALTERS CUP

Wavell stamped their authority early, putting pressure and forcing errors out of a slow-going Caloundra outfit that struggled to get a roll on the opposition.

The deadlock was broken after the opening 14 minutes with Wavell’s Timahma Tandy stepping and weaving his way through before Zius Oloapu added to the score minutes later.

Wavell entered the second half with a 12-0 lead before Zius Oloapu dived over from the ruck for his second try of the afternoon.

Jordan Easthope couldn’t be stopped close to the line, crashing over the chalk before some wide play saw Devine Timu burn his opposition number and extended the score to 28-0.

Another Wavell six-pointer with 12 minutes remaining pushed the score out to 34-0 before a smart dink over the top from Caloundra’s Ellyjah Birve saw Kalan Beattie plant the ball in the in-goal for their first points of the afternoon.

A late 10 in the bin to Wavell’s Tame Liku was an invitation to Caloundra’s Keegan Zanchetta to score under the posts before the referee called full-time with the final score 34-10.

Head coach Toby Poole said he was looking forward to the coming days.

“I’m excited to see them in action and see them compete at this level.”

He hoped his players could step up in the middle and let the outside backs have some room to move.

“Completing is definitely going to be highly important for us,” he said.

“Hopefully our ability to actually shift the ball and play some footy might shift their bigger bodies around and free up some space for us to play through.”

Poole said his players were in good spirits following the Queensland Schools Rugby League Championships in Townsville.

“It was really good seeing the boys that went away play some good footy and they all seem to be in good form heading into Tuesday,” he said.

“They’ve all come back injury free and they’re just keen to rip in.”
