One too many intercepts finally cost Keebra Park, as Marsden pinched a thrilling victory from their rivals in the final minutes at CBUS Super Stadium.

It was the story of the night for the Gold Coast nursery, who were consistently punished for trying one too many passes.

In the end it was an errant offload, which found its way into the hands of Marsden winger Saxon Innes who ran away with a 18-14 victory on the final siren.

Keebra Park looked destined to win the game after a penalty goal from halfback Ryder Williams broke a 12-12 deadlock with 10 minutes to go.

Marsden fullback Kylem Vunipola had a chance to run away with a win for his side, but was chased down by a titanic effort from Keebra Park captain and backrower Jett Bryce.

Bryce backed up his try-saver with another one-on-one effort the next play to seemingly save the win for his side.

But it would be all in vain as Innes pounced on a loose ball in the very next set to steal victory.

Marsden can chalk the win up to their courageous lock forward, Broncos contracted youngster Lewis Symonds, who stormed his way through the Keebra Park defence for a try double.

Symonds, who played out the match in the middle, was unstoppable with ball in hand, consistently bending the line back and on more than one occasion breaking it completely.

But for each try he scored, Keebra Park found an answer almost immediately afterwards.

And that answer was interchange forward Dorian Lotaki.

The former centre scored his second double in as many weeks, taking the earnest approach of kicking down the front door from short range.

Lotaki’s injection midway through the first half brought an energy to a Marsden side who seemed to be flagging under the weight of the Keebra Park side.

Walters Cup: Errors cost both sides, but Keebra survive after the siren

With the Langer Trophy providing the curtain-raiser for Thursday night’s NRL clash between the Titans and the Tigers, the Walters Cup took centre stage - and it certainly delivered on its standalone elevation.

That Keebra Park beat Marsden 8-6 with a penalty goal after the siren was pretty much the story of the match.

Kicks and mistakes were the order of the day.

Keebra took the lead in the 12th minute on the back of an error from a bomb. Marsden levelled things six minutes into the second half after, yes, you guessed it, a failure to deal with a kick.

Both sides had their chances to finish the game off, but it looked as though they might have to settle for one point each until Keebra mounted one last attack in the dying minutes.

A try was narrowly prevented but the effort exhausted Marsden and - down to 12 men - they were caught offside in the ruck and the two points was a mere formaility.

PREVIEW

Keebra Park coach Peter Norman admits he can’t comprehend how Ryder Williams wasn’t selected for the Queensland side in next month’s national titles.

While he is hesitant to heap too much pressure on the young half, his form through the Langer Trophy, Future Titans and South Coast systems says it all: he is on course for big things in rugby league.

Williams spearheaded South Coast to the Queensland Schoolboys Championship in Townsville on the eve of the Langer Trophy launching - scoring a try in the decider against Capricornia and featuring among the competition’s best for try assists.

Yet the enigmatic prospect wasn’t chosen in the Queensland team who will challenge for Australian Schoolboys honours in July.

You can catch Williams and his teammates in Langer Trophy round two action when Keebra Park face Marsden SHS at Cbus Super Stadium as the curtain-raiser for the Titans clash with a Wests Tigers side featuring former Keebra product Jahream Bula.

Marsden State High School, Helensvale Hornets junior and Brisbane Broncos contracted halfback Coby Black won the battle for the No.7 jumper over Williams. The two face off against each other on Thursday night.

Still only in Year 11, Williams has plenty of time on his side to make an impact, but already has his future secured with the Gold Coast Titans, and a future top 30 squad spot locked in.

For now, he has been tasked with orchestrating a Keebra Park triumph over Marsden and his rival half who beat him to the maroon jumper.

Rysder Williams was big hit at the recent Queensland School Rugby League Championships.

“Ryder was our dominant half in the South Coast team, I reckon he would’ve finished with more try assists than any half there,” Norman said.

“For some reason selections didn’t go his way, I’m not sure how that happened, but he’ll dust it off and use it as motivation.

“It’s the fact that he’s big for a half, he’s got a great kicking game and when he sees an opportunity he’s not afraid to take it on.

“You see kids in systems and they’re very robotic, they just try watch Cooper Cronk and mimic that and everything is pre-emptive. Ryder can do both; he manages a game plan but his asset is seeing an opportunity and taking it.

“He’s only in Year 11, but after the state carnival he’s definitely heading in the right direction.”

Williams is one of 11 players in Keebra’s core side affiliated with an NRL club, six of which have been developed through the Titans pathways.

One player who Norman believes will soon be fielding offers is Jeremiah Havea.

The young winger has only recently made the transition from the second row to the flank, and his coach has seen enough to suggest that is where he belongs.

He took on his new role for Wynnum Manly in the Mal Meninga Cup, alongside teammate Jett Bryce, with his highlight coming in scoring a double against Tweed Seagulls.

Williams was considerede unlucky to miss out on the Queensland side.

Norman admits they probably did the wrong thing by Havea in thrusting him into the forward pack, but now he has found a home out wide, NRL systems should be lining up for his services.

“One that’s not signed, but I know there is a lot of interest in after the state carnival, is Jeremiah Havea,” Norman said.

“He transitioned to the wing this year and has killed it. He had a full season with Wynnum Manly in the Mal Meninga Cup and is getting better and better every game.

“He’s a big, tall, rangy winger, and he’s really hard to stop. Off our transition from a kick return and the next three carries, he’s more potential damage than some front rowers.

“He’s coming to the other side when they’re still trying to get bodies on him.”
