Beaten 44-0 by Palm Beach Currumbin in the opening round in 2022, Marsden SHS gave a much better account of themselves 12 months later against the same opposition.

And they could have pulled off a big victory if not for a bit of late PCB intervention.

The first half was locked at 6-6, and the scoreline remained that way until Marsden went over on the left wing. But the conversion was missed and the advantage was only four points.

Both teams battled hard and a try from PBC levelled it for good at 10-10.

In the end, neither team could enjoy a fairytale season opener, but the draw certainly sets a tone for what is to come.

WALTERS CUP

Palm Beach Currumbin have edged out a competitive Marsden State High School 22-16 in a closely-fought Walters Cup match up.

Marsden struggled against PBC’s strong defensive lineup but some exceptional kicking gave the visitors an extra boost.

There was a brief sign of distress for PBC as the scoreline closed to 18-16, but coach Will Johnston remained confident his boys would pull it together.

”I was confident, we just had to hold onto the footy, like in the first half,” Johnston said.

“Once we got that swing of possession, we were fine.”

A big run from fullback Dylan Patterson sealed the deal .

Patterson, along with halfback Marley McLaren, were Johnston’s picks of the day as clear MVPs in the red and white.

With round two around the corner, his side will get to work on completing their sets and putting more pressure on from the get-go.

PREVIEW

Palm Beach Currumbin begin their 2023 Langer Trophy campaign on Tuesday at Tugun against a familiar foe, but one, judging on last year’s finish, that will provide stern opposition.

PBC dealt with Marsden SHS 44-0 in their 2022 season opener before going all the way to the grand final, where they were beaten by eventual national champions, Ipswich.

Marsden recovered from that initial beating to pull off six wins from their next eight games and make the semifinals. There, they ran into the Ipswich juggernaut, but it was still a massive effort considering where they started from.

Captain Zane Harrison and Year 11 gun Sam Stephenson will be key for the hosts.

Harrison will step up from his role in last year’s team. Having gained match experience, he is now well-equipped for the 2023 season.

Stephenson, meanwhile, seems ready to take his game to the next level. He played just two games in last year’s season but has added big minutes in the 2023 Meninga Cup series to his resume.

The young gun has already earned the backing of his coach, Tim Maccan, who describes him as ‘big, fast and agile.’

“Stephenson was just named in the Queensland schoolboys team last weekend so we are expecting a big game out of him,” PBC head coach Tim Maccan said.

It’s no wonder the Gold Coast Titans have already swooped.

Maccan said it will not be an easy feat for his side despite a strong performance in 2022.

“Marsden and PBC both were well represented the state carnival last weekend so both teams will be looking to do really well against each other this week,” he said.

“We are pretty competitive most years and we just want to make sure that we get off to a really good start and get the season going well.”

In Marsden’s back pocket, the triple threat of Coby Black, Lewis Symonds and Elijah Leatigaga are ready for business.

Broncos-signed Black boasts game smarts after gaining experience as a year 11 player in 2022, while multi-athlete Symonds is ready to don Marsden colours after moving from Coombabah.

The No.13 is building a handy league portfolio, with Meninga Cup and Souths Logan Magpies games on his 2023 resume to prove it.

After a nasty injury setback in 2022, Leatigaga is back and ready to unleash for Marsden once again.

He was player of the year of his 2021 Walters Cup team and it’s expected he will be just as good in his return to the game.

Meanwhile, Marsden will be looking to go one better than they did in 2022 when they kick off their Walters Cup campaign against PBC.

Marsden, who lost last year’s final to Keebra Park, look one of the title favourites again, although PBC can never be taken for granted.
