KommunityTV apologises for the disruption to our live stream of the Caloundra v Keebra Park Langer Trophy match. Due to technical issues we will not be able to stream the first half of this game.

Keebra Park came ready to play and as the home side lagged in the starting blocks they were never able to recover with the visitors beating Caloundra 22-12 in round two.

It was a tough start for Caloundra and returning playmaker Ellyjah Birve who was sent to the sin bin in the opening five minutes allowing Keebra left centre Christian Vaimili Toalepai to cross for two tries.

Playing a man down Caloundra struggled to get their hands on the ball but held their own to only trail by 12 points at halftime.

The home side flipped the script early in the second half, controlling the ball and field possession well.

The continuous goal line pressure was too much to sustain for Keebra as damaging prop forward Cooper Clarke burst over close to the line.

After some powerful running from Keebra’s middle forwards, the men in blue hit back down the left touchline through that man again, left centre Christian Vaimili Toalepai to secure his hatrick.

Caloundra fullback Tristan Roselt flew off the short kickoff, retaining the ball for his side and minutes later vice-captain Malakye Blow stormed over next to the right upright.

With 15 minutes remaining, Keebra held a six-point lead but a costly Caloundra error had the visitors extend the gap to 10 points.

Both sides were feeling the pinch in the final few minutes and after some back-and-forth the full time siren rang with the Keebra taking a 22-12 victory.

WALTERS CUP

In Walters Cup action Stretton College hosted Keebra Park but could not match it with the Gold Coast powerhouse who came away with a 28-6 victory.

Both sides were slow to find their groove in the opening half, but Keebra opened the scoring and extended their lead before the break, holding a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Stretton hit back early in the second half to shorten the gap to four points but Keebra Park held their own, kicking away to score a further three tries before the full-time siren.

PREVIEW

After creating Sunshine Coast schoolboy footy history in 2023, Caloundra State High School are back again for the 2024 Langer Trophy season and will be paying tribute to a former student in their quest for victory.

The Sunshine Coast and wider sporting community was rocked to its core in June last year following the tragic passing of Caloundra SHS student, Sunshine Coast Falcons under-16s vice-caption and Melbourne Storm development player Ben ‘BJ’ Hunter.

This season the Caloundra jerseys are embroidered with ‘BH #98’, representing Hunter’s initials and his school cap number.

It means the side will take Hunter onto the field with them for every match, including their Round 2 showdown with Keebra Park on Thursday.

The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, with the coverage kicking off with the Walters Cup clash between Stretton College and Keebra Park at 2pm.

Caloundra coach Toby Poole said playing in honour of Hunter was a key part of the school’s healing.

“It’s very special, obviously it’s something we hold very close to our hearts as a team, a school and a community,”he said.

“Benny still does everything with us so the boys are never without him and we’ve come to the realisation that each week we play with 14 on the field instead of 13.”

The Seahawks proved they weren’t going to be pushovers in round one, going down 26-12 to Mabel Park SHS and will get a home ground boost on Thursday when they take on Keebra Park from Tinonee Oval.

Keebra Park snagged a tight 28-26 victory over Wavell SHS in round one.

Round two would also hopefully be the first appearance of the season for captain Zac Garton who missed the opening fixture with a hip flexor injury.

“I’m really proud that Pooley and the coaching staff trust me in leading the team so hopefully I can fulfil that honour,” he said.

“We were brand new last year and no one really knew what to expect but it’s brought heaps of experience to our squad this season and I’m keen to see what we can produce.”

Poole said he was excited for the home ground matchup.

“There’s a lot of boys that waited for a crack last year and didn’t get it so they’re really excited to get their opportunity which is a reflection that competition for spots is really healthy this season,” he said.

“I’d say half of our 2023 squad is returning this season so a lot of them are aware of what’s coming and they’re holding themselves accountable for our inner circle goal which is a top six finish.”
