For the second week in a row, Bundaberg State High has had its heart shattered in the dying minutes of the Dolphins Challenge.
The sharp work of Shalom College fullback Parker Perrotta-Dowling came to the fore, as he set up flying winger Axel Lowe to cross the stripe with three minutes to go to sink Bundaberg State High 14-10 in the Bundaberg derby.
Both sides had showed a level of resilience and starch in defence that will give the rest of the competition plenty of reason for concern.
After being beaten by a Marist College fight back last week, Bundaberg State High would have been concerned their defensive woes had crossed over to Round 2 when Shalom scored two simple tries in the first 10 minutes.
Shalom skipper Riley Morcom forced his way over from a simple dummy-half play in the opening stages before impressive hooker Tahj Coates, who was one of the school’s best on ground, found Josh Sutton down a short side to extend the lead to 10-0.
But Bundaberg refused to give in to their rivals.
In a spirited fightback, they scored twice before the halftime break with Kyjuan Tanna benefiting from the hard work of his inside men to score the team’s first.
Halfback Nait Gough cleaned up a regulation drop at the back from Shalom to level the scores four minutes later.
And that was where it would stand, with both sides trading blows through the middle of the park and defending their line with a determination rarely seen in the schoolboys ranks.
But in the end it would be Shalom who had the last laugh, taking their Dolphins Challenge record to 1-1 after the opening two rounds.

“We showed that we can attack and score points, but the last 20 minutes defensively was extremely disappointing.
“We became completely complacent and stopped competing.
“As a result, we had a very physical contact session at training to end the week, so hopefully there is an improvement next round.”
Captain Brody Allan, who was player of the match last round, will be a key player through the middle.
“He played nearly the whole match in the front row and ran with plenty of purpose,” Handley said of his skipper in the last round.
“We will need him again to be strong against a big Shalom forward pack.”
Handley also praised the efforts of fullback Tyson Rizzo, and centre Kyjuan Tanna.
The coach is also looking for his half, Jimmy Gear and centre David Woodford to take control of their attack.
