Two of rugby league’s emerging playmakers will go head-to-head in a big final round clash in the Peter Mulholland Cup.
Sydney Roosters Harold Matts representative Triston Ross will lead the charge for Matraville Sports High as they hunt a first win of the season against the Christian Azzi-led Holy Cross College.
The round three clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV on Wednesday.
While finals are out of the equation for the two Pool A rivals, it won’t stop these two young playmakers from going out with a point to prove.
Azzi, who played halfback for Balmain in the Harold Matts this season, has been one of Holy Cross’ best players in a tough 2025 Peter Mulholland Cup campaign.
The most experienced player in the line up, Azzi is into his third year in the NRL Schoolboys Cup after making his start as a 15-year-old in 2023.
Holy Cross coach Tim White said the growth he had seen out of his halfback since his first foray in the Cup was one of the key reasons behind handing him the Holy Cross captaincy this season.
“I definitely saw (the change in him) last year. From his first year to last year, the growth was massive,” White said.
“In a big game, his biggest weapons are his kicking and passing game. If he can bring them hopefully he can show he is a player to lead by action.
“We have ten 16-year-olds in our team and the rest are 17. We are a young team. He is the most experienced player in our side.”
A Parkes junior, Ross has made a home in the halves for Matraville after moving to the big smoke to take up an opportunity in the Roosters system.
He has been one of the rare shining lights for the winless Matraville side along with NSW Combined High Schools representative EJ Mahu-Delamere at fullback.
