WHAT WE LEARNED
NEVER COUNT OUT A QUEENSLANDER
It’s true in State of Origin, it’s true in schoolgirls football.
The Queensland girls looked in strife at halftime of their blockbuster clash against NSW Combined High Schools.
Down by three tries and utterly exhausted, it was hard to see where Queensland was going to be able to land a blow.
All they needed was a little bit of inspiration and it came from the best place.
When front rower Carayanidis Ta’Akimoeaka-Pulu went steaming through a gap and ploughed her way over the top of luckless NSW fullback Khiarna Munro - the change was immediate.
The Queensland side, inspired by their tough-as-nails prop, were running faster, hitting harder and coming up with more plays than NSW had answers for.
The come-from-behind 18-12 win has turned the ASSRL Under-16 Girls title race on its head.
GOANNAS HAVE A LICENCE TO THRILL
How good are the Goannas?
The ASSRL’s indigenous invitational side is always one of the shining lights of the national championships, and it is no different in Townsville.
After making short work of rivals NT in the opening game on Sunday, the Goannas kept up their momentum with a strong performance against a high-flying Victoria.
The injection of Wavell State High gun Dane Gordon off the bench has been crucial for the Goannas in both of their wins.
It took 20 minutes of arm-wrestling before the Goannas finally broke through the dam wall on Monday.
Gordon had a hand in the first try with his crisp service from dummy-half, then he backed up a long break on the next play to score a second.
When halfback Malachi Kirk took caution to the wind with a kick ahead on the first tackle for Zaccharia Campbell to score on the stroke of halftime, the Big V were left completely shellshocked.
The Goannas managed to hold on for a 20-4 win.
CIS CASHING IN ON THEIR CONNECTIONS
The connection between NSW CIS players Rylee Cash and Charli Hardgrave came to the fore on Monday while their superstar fullback just kept turning heads.
Hardgrave scored two tries, including a great runaway effort on the stroke of halftime, while Cash pulled all the strings in their bounce back 52-4 win over WA.
The pair have a long-standing connection from their days as juniors at the Gosford Devils.
While the pair controlled the left edge, star fullback Cobi Ryan-Last was everywhere else for the NSW CIS girls.
Our resident statistician (me with a calculator) had CRL’s numbers as one try, two try assists, two line breaks and two line break assists before she was given a well-earned early rest in the second half.
Not to be outdone by her teammates, impressive five-eighth Layla Tonga had three try-assists of her own in the big win.
THE QUEENSLAND LADS ARE TIGHT
They might have been bashing each other up on the opening day of the tournament, but the connection between Queensland’s two boys sides is clear.
Despite having the day off on the bye, the Queensland Maroon squad were crowding the fence watching on as their Queensland White counterparts picked up a confidence-inducing win over NSW Combined Independent Schools.
The Queenslanders cheered every time the boys in white crossed the tryline.
It was at its fever-pitch best when likeable Queensland White captain Jesse-James Schuster pounced late in the second-half to seal the win.
The scenes at the fence line at field two were epic to see.
Expect the White boys to be out in force tomorrow when Queensland Maroon take on NSW CIS on Jack Manski Oval.
PREVIEW
Rugby league fans will be treated to a potential early preview of the Under-16 girls grand final on day two of the ASSRL National Championships.
The two big winners from the opening day in Townsville, NSW Combined High Schools and Queensland, will lock horns to kick off a massive day of action on Monday.
Every game of the ASSRL Under-15/16 National Championships will be exclusively live streamed across two fields on Monday.
Watch Field 1 above and watch Field 2 below. Scroll down to check out the full opening day schedule.
The clash will be a replay of last year’s Under-16 girls decider, and if Sunday’s results are anything to go by, it is likely a preview of this years’ one.
The form of the Queenslanders was one of the big talking points coming into the tournament, with star back-rower Macey Lahrs’ lack of action this year a question mark.
The dual-code representative star, who made her return from injury this week, answered those questions emphatically with a player of the match performance as the Queensland side scored six-unanswered tries.
The NSW CHS girls were just as dominant in their contest with representative hooker Dawn Tui leading from the front.
NSW CIS will hunt its first win of the tournament against an impressive Western Australia side, while NSW CCC back up against Victoria.
In the boys action NSW CIS will look to kick start its ASSRL Under-15s campaign up against hosts Queensland White, while day one winners NSW CCC will look to keep the momentum going against the ACT.
