PREVIEW
Fresh off the school’s historic Confraternity Shield win, St Patrick’s College Mackay will look to reload in its quest for Aaron Payne Cup supremacy.
The Mackay schools league juggernaut will clash with Cairns’ rivals St Augustine’s College in a top-four Aaron Payne Cup showdown in Townsville on Wednesday.
The match will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a double header along with the Cowboys Challenge clash between the two schools.
St Patrick’s College, who sit in second place behind the undefeated Kirwan State High in the race to the finals, will ride a wave of momentum into the back end of the Payne Cup season.
The nursery, which has produced top NRL talents including Daly Cherry-Evans and Wendell Sailor, broke a two-decade long drought at the Confraternity Carnival earlier this month.
Impressive halves duo Adam McSherry and Joshua Toby spearheaded a triumphant Confraternity campaign which ended with a 16-10 win over Brisbane powerhouse Padua College.
But St Patrick’s will need to shelve the emotion of that win, as they come up against a dangerous St Augustine’s College who have finals dreams of their own.
With dangerous middle forward Cooper Meares impressing in his FNQRL A Grade debut for defending premiers Brothers over the weekend, St Augustine’s bring their own slice of momentum into the contest.
St Augustine’s enjoyed a rich run of form in its own Confraternity campaign reaching the Shield quarter-finals for the first time in a number of years.
“It’s a big challenge for our boys this week against the Confraternity champs for 2025,” St Augustine’s coach Kris O’Farrell said.
“They’re a very disciplined and physical team that kicks well and are aggressive with their defence.
“We need to be better with our contact and repeat efforts.
“Our second rowers Zavier Suluvale and Riley Wells will need to roll up their sleeves and get busy.
“If we limit our errors we can give ourselves every opportunity to get into the arm wrestle.”
