Qld Basketball – CBSQ Open – Boys Champ Div GF – Brisbane SHS v TSS

The Southport School have completed a dominant undefeated season with a state championship after demolishing Brisbane State High School by 17 points in the CBSQ grand final at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre.

It was the match up everyone wanted to see, both teams went into the clash undefeated after Covid lockdowns meant each school did not face each other during the GPS competition.

But it was TSS who came out firing, running out to an early lead by executing their plans on both the defensive and offensive ends, with dynamic duo Preston Le Gassick and Lloyd McVeigh leading from the front.

But the second quarter belonged to State High as guard Xavier Chio sparked his team with his infectious energy on both ends of the floor and his big men in Mason Amos, Elijah Kamu and James Lewis starting dominating the keyway, Kris Robinson’s side were within reach at halftime.

However, TSS steadied and were the better team in the second half, coming out of the main group executing on both ends and making the crucial plays when it mattered as Le Gassick and McVeigh continued to dominate the game.

The Gold Coast-based school, coached by former Australian Boomer Anthony Petrie, extended their lead out to more than 20 points and from there could not be stopped as State High struggled to grab the momentum.

Le Gassick was named player of the game with 18 points, McVeigh had 21, while Hancock had 14 and Amarco Doyle had 13.

Amos led the scoring for State High with 19 points.

GIRLS CHAMP DIV GF: Hillcrest Christian College def Southport SHS 63-44

Hillcrest Christian College have added another girls state championship to their trophy cabinet after a convincing 19-point victory over Gold Coast rivals, Southport State High School in the grand final this afternoon.

Both teams headed into the championship game following different paths as Hillcrest were the favourites to take out the title, while Southport had to record several upsets along the way, including over Brisbane State High in the semi-final and Moreton Bay College in the round stages, to get to the decider.

Southport’s Katelyn Donovan had the performance of the tournament in the semi-final, scoring 53 points, but that wasn’t going to happen against Hillcrest who made it tough for the talented guard for the full 40 minutes.

Hillcrest, who are stacked with elite talent and coached by New Zealand basketball legend Pero Cameron, struggled to pull away from the gritty Southport team in the first half despite their defensive efforts.

But in the second half, it was all Hillcrest as the trio of guards in Lilly Rotunno, Layla-J Cameron and Jessica Smith dominated on the offensive end with Jade Peacock also making significant contributions on both ends of the floor.

Skye Mason battled hard for Southport but Hillcrest ran away with the victory and the state title.

Rotunno led the scoring with 15 points, Smith had 14, Cameron had 12 and Peacock had 11 while Mason had 15 for Southport.
