Anglican Church Grammar School have beaten Marsden State High School 3-2 to take out the Bill Turner Cup.
The opening 10 minutes of the boys Queensland grand final saw both teams hold their fair share of possession but Marsden were able to make the most of their chances through attacking duo Bailey Ferguson and Baxter Humphries.
The midfield battle of both teams remained the talking point in the opening half with Marsden’s Caleb Butler and Churchie’s Hiro Sueimura leading the charge.
Churchie’s backline were able to deal with the early defensive pressure and after a few minutes of building attacking play it was captain Lucas Herrington that was able to open the scoring in the back and forth affair.
The high intense match saw Churchie head into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
A long range bomb from Lucas Herrington at the back was matched with another inviting attacking pass that saw Churchie striker Levi Collins end up in open space and finish with precision.
SCROLL DOWN FOR ALL THE REPLAYS FROM DAY ONE AND TWO
Marsden were finally able to break onto the scoresheet with a headed goal from Ali Abdul.
Scores remained 2-1 with 13 minutes to play until a Churchie handball inside the penalty box sent Marsden captain Caleb Butler to the spot and saw him convert to level the match 2-2.
With five minutes left in the match, Churchie’s right side attack were able to build and deliver a cross inside the box to Arden Hogan who, with one bounce, beat the keeper and regained the lead for his team.
A match winning save with only minutes remaining from Churchie’s goalkeeper Joshua Tanner was enough for the boys in blue and grey to come away with the 3-2 victory as striker Levi Collins was crowned player of the final.
Girls Queensland Final – Cairns State High School 3 beat Murrumba State Secondary College 0
The opening 10 minutes saw Cairns take control of the ball and the speed of play with the Murrumba midfield struggling to form any early momentum.
Some top individual efforts from Murrumba defender Daniella Casey-Polla helped hold Cairns to nil for the first 20 minutes but the pressure continued to build off the back of the probing midfield class from Cairns number seven Alana Hill.
The grand final deadlock was finally broken after Cairns attacker Payton Rose was able to get the ball up and over the goalkeeper’s head before landing it in the back of the net.
The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half with both teams having all to play for in the final 30 minutes.
Cairns captain Hayley Campbell remained a brick in the defensive line as the work upfront from left winger Taryn Knight looked to be troubling the Murrumba back four.
Following a breathtaking overhead kick that was parried out, Murrumba went close again soon after with a squared ball into the box that unfortunately couldn’t be capitalised on.
Cairns hit back with some attacking pressure of their own which saw winger Nikikata Job step on her right boot and strike the ball over the top of the goalkeepers head to further extend their lead.
The dominant display of attack continued in the closing 10 minutes with a final goal from Cairns player, Taryn Knight, enough for the girls in blue to put one hand on the trophy.
Cairns eventually came away with a well deserved grand final win as the scores finished 3-0 and midfielder Alana Hill was crowned player of the match.
Girls Third Place Playoff – Kelvin Grove Secondary College 3 beat Cleveland District State High 2
An early chance was parried wide from Cleveland’s goalkeeper Nellie Lewis after Kelvin Grove’s winger Kitia Whittiker tried to sneak one through the near post.
A chance soon after opened the scoring with Kelvin Grove’s Cate Morrison tapping the ball into the open net.
Morrison showed her class minutes later, beating two defenders and doing enough to put the keeper in two minds as she placed the ball perfectly into the back of the net.
The play switched soon after with Cleveland finally being able to play some possession football in their own half which resulted in a delightful team goal finished off by Poppy Scott.
A defensive challenge late in the first half on Cleveland’s Sadie Green saw Mikayla Coates convert from the penalty spot to level the scores at 2-2.
A powerful shot from Kelvin Grove’s Cate Morrison was enough for her to seal her hat-trick and regain the lead for her team with 25 minutes of play remaining.
Play seemed to remain in the attacking half and in favour of Kelvin Grove in the second half with the girls in green running out eventual winners 3-2.
Boys Third Place Playoff – Aspley State High School 2 beat Cairns State High 0
The opening fifteen minutes had Cairns controlling the bulk of possession and field territory although it wasn’t enough to break open the Aspley defence.
Aspley’s tall and agile centre back pairing of Ethan Dent and Soane Sawiki remained a problem in the first half but after a poor challenge the referee pointed to the spot and Cairns striker Henri Mackenzie was able to beat the keeper and put his team in front.
Cairns continued to control the first half with Aspley registering a limited number of attacking chances and the work of Aspley goalkeeper Henri Easkin keeping his side in the game.
A legal but aggressive challenge in the opening minutes of the second half saw Aspley captain Kobi Pastourel limp from the field resulting in a major communication and midfield loss for the trailing team.
Not long after Cairns striker Ryan Ikeda Was able to convert off the back of a perfect mid-range pass that saw him find some open space and put the ball in the back of the net.
The Aspley backline was marginally tested in the final 20 minutes but it wasn’t enough to break them open as the boys in blue came away with a 2-0 victory.
