Live stream: Bill Turner Cup and Trophy Queensland grand finals

A penalty shootout ended the girls decider while the boys needed a bit of extra time magic - and both results went against the teams from the north. Relive all the action from a big day.

Ipswich GS 1 d 0 St Augustine’s College Cairns (Cup Final)

With one school looking to emulate their 2019 success and the other eager to win for the first time, the Cup final was the most evenly contested game of the day.

The first half was a goalless affair despite a number of great chances, and even more impressive saves.

The second half was a lot more full-on, with both schools throwing caution to the wind, and tempers beginning to rise.

Long balls, set-plays, individual brilliance and corner kicks all provided a plethora of chances for both teams.

Much like the first half, brilliant goalkeeping kept the score at 0-0  and the game headed to extra time.

IGS had the best chance of the game when three players found themselves in space in front of goal.

Unfortunately for the 2019 champs, poor communication and a mis-kick saw the ball dribble into the grasp of St. Augustine’s grateful goalkeeper.

In the second half of extra time, a poorly timed tackle from St. Augustine’s Samuel Humphries drew his second yellow of the game and he was sent off.

IGS’s captain Nelson Deng stepped up to the mark just outside of the box. His free kick hit the wall, but he stayed composed, dragging the ball across to his left foot and slotting home.

Kelvin Grove SC 2 d Cairns SHS 2 (5-4) on penalties (Trophy Final)

The state final didn’t disappoint.

With two goals from long-range free kicks and another own goal off a header, the game was wild.

After a topsy turvy opening 15 minutes, Cairns made a break on the counter attack, only to be taken down 10m into KG’s half.

Awarded a freekick, Cairns’ powerful centre back Tanay Martin nutmegged the goalkeeper from distance to give her side a bizarre opener.

The score remained 1-0 to Cairns at the halftime whistle.

KG scored the equaliser in the 37th minute. A corner kick wasn’t cleared by Cairns far enough and Millie Green beat the sprawling defenders on Cairns’ goal line.

The Brisbane-based school then doubled their lead less than three minutes later after Hayley Campbell’s freekick soared over the top of everyone into the top right corner.

It took only minutes for Cairns to respond - and it came from another own goal, with the defender heading against the crossbar and then into the net.

The game went into 20 minutes of extra time - and after that still wasn’t enough to separate the sides, it came down to a penalty shootout.

While both sides were perfect from the spot after three attempts, it was the fourth attempt for Cairns where the wheels fell off.

A misplaced kick rolled into the hands of KG’s keeper, giving the girls in white the advantage.

After a premature celebration from KG - as they miscounted - Kitia Whittaker kicked the winning goal, knocking Cairns off their perch as the state’s best.

Kawana Waters SC 1 lost to Anglican Church GS 2 (Cup 3/4 Playoff)

A team goal that spanned the length of the pitch put Kawana in the lead in the 18th minute.

The ball was played out of the back and through the middle of the park to Isaac Gull, who proceeded to burn through two defenders and smash the ball into the bottom left of the net.

Churchie then hit back straight away with a belter of a goal.

A through ball to Cooper Collins saw the left winger streak through the gap in defence to score a nice and composed goal to level the score.

Then in the 60th minute, Churchie took the lead for the first time in the game.

Another great goal and the second for Collins, with the winger chipping the goalkeeper with another composed finish.

Chancellor SC 1 d 0 Cavendish Road SHS (Trophy 3/4 Playoff)

In a very evenly matched affair, Chancellor scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

Lexi Cooper drilled the ball into the back of the net with a firm header after finding herself wide open in the box.

The second half was much of the same with both sides creating plenty of chances, but there were no more goals.

PREVIEW

Lessons learned from an unsuccessful state title tilt with a team coaches genuinely believed could go all the way will give this year’s crop of St Augustine’s College talent the edge at the Bill Turner Cup Queensland finals.

Saints haven’t been to a state title since new Brisbane Roar signing Thomas Waddingham was part of an outstanding team back in 2019, but an out-of-sorts side fell in the semi-final then finished third.

While still a great result, it was an opportunity lost for a team which could have mixed it with the best in the national finals at Lake Macquarie.

Saints coach Terry McDonough said the school had learned from that experience, with the team travelling a day early to give themselves every chance of winning when they face Kawana Waters in the semi-final on Tuesday.

That game, along with all fixtures at the Queensland and national finals, will be shown live and exclusively through KommunityTV.

For McDonough, it is a third time in the past five years he has a side which was capable of claiming the state title.

“We’ve given ourselves some more time, we’ve been down previously and come third in the state (in 2019),” McDonough said.

“We had an even better team in 2020 with Waddo and a few very talented boys in there but Covid hit and the finals were cancelled.”

This Saints team is coming off a 4-0 win against Ryan Catholic College in the regional play-off with a performance McDonagh said was typical of all his team’s so far: they played as a team.

“We beat Ryan CC 4-0, played solidly against those guys, it was a good team effort,” McDonough said.

“The boys have represented Peninsula, a few of them went away with the under-16s who finished third at the state championships.”

Saints take a team-first mentality into every game they play, but McDonough said this team’s spine of captain and striker Jack Edwards, midfielder Tom Ruggiero and Dominic Johnson (defender) laid much of the groundwork.

“Our spine is pretty strong. The three who would’ve got points against Ryan were Jack Edwards, Tommy and Dominic Johnson,” McDonough said.

“They give us a lot of confidence going through the spine.”

And at the back is one of the region’s best up-and-coming goalkeepers in Patrick Maher.

A back-up shot-stopper for Edge Hill United’s premier men’s side, Maher has showcased his ability on some big stages in the Far North.

But in this competition, he is yet to concede a goal.

“We try to keep that a little low key,” McDonough said.

“We’ve got that strength through the spine, Patty is not named as a captain but he’s clearly an on-field leader and captain.

“His communication, but the confidence he gives us from the back is immense.

“He’s got a strong character, the boys get their confidence from him. He’s a rock at the back. This kid has maturity beyond his years.”

As for Kawana? Well, the challenge is all theirs.

“We’ll set-up as we usually do, we won’t go out to specifically counter how they play, we go in with the mindset that they’ll have to beat us,” he said.

Kick-off is at 1pm.
