DAY ONE MATCHES
IPSWICH GS 1 d ANGLICAN CGS 0 (Cup Semi-Final 2)
With both sides powerhouses of GPS football and littered with talent, IGS and Churchie played out a very even and hard fought 60 minutes.
Both schools made their fair share or breaks and chances in both halves but neither defensive unit nor goalie would let anything get past.
Nil all at the end of regulation, the game went into extra time.
Much like the girl’s semi-final earlier in the day, it was in the final seconds of the first extra time half where the game was won.
Replay: Ipswich Grammar School v Anglican Church Grammar School (Cup)
IGS scored through their number nine Sam McCosker after he was on the receiving end of a skilful long range chip from the left edge.
McCosker bumped off the Churchie defender and slotted the ball in the back of the net.
There was a bit of confusion and protest from the Churchie boys who argued there was a foul on the play.
After talking to one of the sideline officials, the referee blew his whistle signalling the goal would stand and thus blowing time on Churchie’s title hopes.
IGS will face St. Augustine tomorrow afternoon in the Bill Turner Cup final.
ST AUGUSTINE’S 2 d KAWANA WATERS SC 0 (Cup Semi-Final 1)
A brilliant double save by Kawana’s goalie and a shot from directly in front just two metres out that hit the crossbar weren’t enough for Kawana to keep St Augustine’s off the board.
St Augustine’s right centre back Samuel Humphries kicked Kawana’s attempted clearance from halfway line, in which the ball landed near the penalty spot and bounced over Kawana’s keeper as he was off his line.

St Augustine’s then doubled their lead nearly 20 minutes later against the run of play.
A through ball to Jonathan Galea on the top corner of the 18 yard box was dispatched into the top left corner, giving Kawana’s keeper with no chance of keeping it out.
The second 30 was a bit of a kick-athon with both side’s playing a myriad of long ball in hopes of catching the opposing defensive line slacking.
Despite both side’s efforts the score remained 2-0 to St Augustine’s, which will face the winner of IGS v Churchie in the state final on Wednesday.
KELVIN GROVE SC 3 d CAVENDISH ROAD SHS 0 (Trophy Semi-Final 2)
While the first half finished 0-0, it was Kelvin Grove that impressed with the share of possession and chances created.
Cavendish Road got off to a strong start but faded away and were unable to wrangle back momentum from the girls in red.
KG’s left winger Zani Ferreira and holding midfielder Xiana Ludwif were constant threats throughout the entire 30 minutes.
Ferreira’s speed down the edge and Ludwig’s ball skills created a number of chances, but to no avail.

KG came flying out of the gates in the second half, applying a lot of forward pressure early.
Given a free kick from the edge of the box, Millie Green rifled the ball over the wall and into the hands of Cavendish’s keeper, who did not take clean possession of the ball letting it bounce on the goal line only to be tapped in by Sophia Colen, much to the dismay of Cavendish’s number one.
Then only moments later, KG struck again with a brilliant link up goal from Green and Ludwig, scored by Lauren McMahon, to take a 2-0 lead.
KG scored again after Green and Ferreira linked up on the right wing, with Ferreira’s cross landing at the feet of Ruby Jordan who nutmegged the keeper, putting the score at 3-0.
After the final whistle the score read 3-0 to KG, which will now face Cairns SHS in the final on Wednesday.
CAIRNS SHS 2 d CHANCELLOR SC 1 (Trophy Semi-Final 1)
Getting off to a cracking start and applying heavy pressure early, Chancellor scored the opening goal of the game in the second minute.
A corner that resulted in the second ball landing at the feet of Chancellor’s Sophie Holbeck, on the edge of the 18-yard line, saw her chip the keeper, taking everyone by surprise.
Then as fate would have it, the girls from Cairns also scored off a corner; a header in the 21st minute.
Replay: Cairns State High School v Chancellor State College (Trophy)
The corner, taken by Valentina Oberdan, was a brilliant ball to teammate Kyah Jones who struck a header that ricocheted off the keeper’s hands and landed in the back of the net.
The second-half was a much more subdued affair with neither side holding on to possession for long periods of time.
At the end of the 60 minutes with the score still deadlocked at 1-1, it was time for golden goal.
Again, neither side gave an inch with formidable defence negating any real scoring chances.
Then, in the final seconds of the first extra time half, Chancellor’s dreams of advancing to the state finals came crashing down in the cruellest of fashion.
A free kick from the left boot of Oberdan landed in the centre of the 18-yard box and resulted in a rushed kick launching the ball straight up into the air.
Chancellor’s Violet Hutchinson then miss timed her attempted clearance, heading the ball backwards over her goalie’s head to score an own goal, and the goal that knocked them out of the tournament.
PREVIEW
Chasing their second title in a row, and their third in five years, Cairns State High School girls side are on a mission to be the state’s premier footballing schools.
But facing a formidable Chancellor State College outfit, who made the final two years ago, the girls are under no illusions of how tough the task ahead will be.
You can catch the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy Queensland semi-final and final days LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV on Tuesday, August 8 and Wednesday, August 9 from AJ Kelly Field, Kippa-Ring.
That’s eight games across two streams, including the big Cairns v Chancellor showdown at 10.30am on Tuesday. See the full LIVE schedule below.
The results on Tuesday will directly affect who plays in Wednesday’s finals.
The semi-final winners will play one another the following day, while the losers will battle it out for third and fourth.
The games will be 30 minute halves, with five minutes allotted for halftime, and will allow for unlimited substitutions.
“We (Cairns) do have high expectations as a side and will be disappointed if we don’t at least reach the final,” Cairns SHS’s Trophy coach Joshua Purton said.
“Last year we were quite strong and had a convincing 5-0 win in the semis and went on to win 3-0 in the final against Murrumba (State Secondary College).”
The defending premiers have experienced a big turnover of players from the side that laced up the boots in last year’s final. But despite this, the coach is adamant his ‘new’ players are as strong, if not stronger than last year’s champions.
“Because the Bill Turner only goes up to grade 10, we’ve had a fair bit of change in the side from last year, with about half the squad being new players,” Purton said.
“I haven’t had the chance to watch Chancellor yet, but I know that they’re a traditionally strong side.
“I’m expecting the players to all step up and be up to the task. I’m confident in all of their abilities.”
Purton tipped the likes of Valentina Oberdan, Tanay Martin, Alyssa Biancotti, and Payton Rose to be the leading lights.
“All of those girls are Queensland calibre players. I know that they’ll be big for us and our chances of winning the final,” he said.
The winner of Cairns v Chancellor will face the winner of the other semi between Kelvin Grove State College or Cavendish Road SHS, both football excellence schools.
