Monday Racebook: Gilbert Gardiner’s horses to follow, forgive from 2024 Caulfield Cup Day

‘Fun horse to follow’: Gilbert Gardiner presents the five horses all punters should blackbook following big runs on 2024 Caulfield Cup Day.

Melbourne Saturday Review – Caulfield Cup

Racenet and The Herald Sun racing writer Gilbert Gardiner analyses Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday, presenting his horses to follow and forgive.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

REY MAGNERIO (2nd of 8, Millennium Sprint)
My goodness is he going to be popular at Flemington in the Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes (1200m). Two massive runs to start the campaign. Fun horse to follow.

VALIANT KING (9th of 18, Caulfield Cup)
One of many Melbourne Cup hopes cruelled by barriers in the Caulfield Cup. Happy with WARMONGER (8th) and CIRCLE OF FIRE (10th) under the circumstances. ELIYASS (7th) also.

INEVITABLE TRUTH (4th of 10, Ethereal Stakes)
Best work late in the VRC Oaks lead-up and in astute hands of trainer John Sargent. The filly travelled last in the run and rallied late to grab fourth, beaten two lengths.

GLOBE (4th of 15, Moonga Stakes)
Boxed on great on speed, collared late. Should improve markedly from the run.

MATISSE (6th of 11, Thousand Guineas Prelude)
Ticking over nicely and should be right in the thick of the action in a month. BENAGIL (4th) tracking in the right direction.

FORGIVE

ELIYASS (7th of 18, Caulfield Cup)
Rolled forward from barrier 18 to settle behind the speed and could not maintain the rage understandably. Stick with him.

SKYBIRD (7th of 12, Tristarc Stakes)
Back in traffic and never got clear air. Much better suited at Flemington in a fortnight.

ISTHMUS (4th of 9, Alinghi Stakes)
Raced in restricted room and bumped at a critical stage, lost all momentum. Pulled up lame in the left foreleg, so easy forgive runner.

KEENELAND (3rd of 6, Caulfield Classic)
Outside the leader and nailed late in a three-way go by KINGOFWALLSTREET and CHINA SEA, who had the drop on Keeneland. The late Riff Rocket tasted defeat in the same race last year and won the Victoria Derby.

GENTLEMAN ROY (6th of 15, Moonga Stakes)
Posted wide without cover and five weeks between runs. Better for the pipe-opener. On pace racing style, class and toughness conducive to bouncing back quickly.
