An injury while celebrating in the Sheffield Shield has ended up costing Jhye Richardson dearly, with the paceman now facing months on the sidelines after electing to undergo shoulder surgery this week in a bid to ready himself for next summer’s Ashes series.

The 28-year-old has a history of shoulder injuries, with his latest dislocation coming while celebrating a wicket for Western Australia against South Australia in late November.

He managed to keep playing in that match and through the summer, even being called up to Australia’s squad for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests.

But the injury-riddled quick has now been ruled out of the back end of the Big Bash League season as well as any possible Australian involvement for much of the year as he aims to add to his three Tests, the last of which came in late 2021.

“After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury,” Richardson said.

“For the past few years, I have been limited by my shoulder in the field and know how increasingly important it is to be capable to back up my teammates.

“While it’s a tough call, especially as it means I won’t be able to finish the season with the Scorchers, this is the best option to set me up for a strong and healthy return to cricket.

“The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer. I’ll be giving everything I’ve got to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself.

“Thanks for all the support, and I can’t wait to be back stronger for summer 2025/2026!”

Australia is meanwhile likely to unveil its squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy on Monday.

Captain Pat Cummins is in doubt for the event as he deals with an ankle concern that caused him discomfort during the Test series against India.

Josh Hazlewood is however expected to be available following the calf injury that ruled him out of the back end of the India Tests and two Tests in Sri Lanka.
