‘First time ever’: Dad’s million-to-one catch from son’s bowling goes viral

A million-to-one moment in the BBL left commentators staggered when brutal details emerged about a catch taken in the crowd.

Haskett blasted for 6 – Dad catches it!

It’s fair to say the odds of cleanly catching a six in the crowd at the Adelaide Oval during a Big Bash game are quite high

Now, think about how astronomical the odds become for the crowd catch to be made by the bowler’s father.

Astoundingly, that’s exactly what happened during Saturday night’s BBL clash between the Adelaide Strikers and the Brisbane Heat.

You can watch the drama in the video player above.

The game was memorable for many reasons, notably the Strikers smashing the second-biggest BBL score of 251.

However, what happened in the Heat’s innings beggars belief, with Fox Cricket’s Michael Vaughan stating that it had to have been the first time it’s ever occurred.

Strikers pacer Liam Haskett debuted for Adelaide and was on the wrong end of some power Heat hitting.

Early in the Heat innings, Haskett was smashed for a maximum by former Test opener Nathan McSweeney, with the ball impressively caught by a crowd member.

Much later in the innings, when Haskett was about to begin his third over, Fox Cricket’s Adam Gilchrist notified audiences that McSweeney’s earlier six had been caught by none other than Haskett’s father Lloyd.

Unlike most, if not all successful crowd catches, Lloyd didn’t appear too “thrilled” after the grab.

“That man there is Liam Haskett’s dad,” Gilchrist said over a replay of the crowd catch.

“He sat back there and did not look thrilled at all. He played it very cool that we just thought he was a cool customer but he was so disappointed that his son on debut had just been dispatched.”

“No way. That must be the first time ever,” Vaughan added.

The camera panned to Heskett’s parents in the midst of Haskett’s over, both of whom looked understandably nervous as their son came into bowl.

Haskett copped a bit of treatment from the Heat batsmen, but did pick up two wickets (2/43 off 3 overs), a Strikers win and a family memory that will last a lifetime.
