He was one of the unsung heroes of Melbourne Renegades’ BBL success last summer. Can spinner Cameron Boyce deliver again and be a SuperCoach BBL factor?

Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce was arguably the most important player in Melbourne Renegades’ Big Bash League title win last season.

The 30-year-old sparked the stunning collapse which secured a 13-run victory in the final against cross-town rival Melbourne Stars with the wickets of opening pair Marcus Stoinis and Ben Dunk.

It would be unfair on one of the Renegades’ unsung heroes to focus solely on his heroics in the decider.

Boyce was one of the most economical bowlers of BBL08, conceding only 6.44 runs an over and taking 16 wickets.

A seven-time T20 international for Australia, Boyce was one of the most improved players in the BBL.

In 2017-18, he took six wickets from 10 games, conceded a costly 7.88 runs an over and contributed four runs playing for Hobart Hurricanes.

In 2018-19, his first season with the Renegades, Boyce collected 16 scalps in 16 matches and clubbed 146 runs at a strike rate of 149.

While his wickets tally was eight short of Kane Richardson (24), Boyce’s role was vital to the Renegades’ success.

The tweaker twice helped stem the flow of runs in finals at Marvel Stadium and unleashed his batting ability when he hammered 51 from 22 deliveries against Sydney Thunder.

The Renegades even flirted with Boyce as a pinch-hitter at the top of the order after his power-packed display, although the experiment was short-lived.

Boyce averaged 59.4 SuperCoach BBL points, ranked third behind Richardson (74.5) and Dan Christian (68.7) for the Renegades.

He was a bargain selection at the start of the tournament at $87,200, making a $104,400 profit to finish at $191,600.

Boyce is available for $171,000 ahead of BBL09, too expensive to be a serious consideration for starting teams.

However, keep him in your trade plans if he becomes more affordable before Melbourne Renegades’ Round 5 double against the Sixers and Stars.

Boyce proved to be a wicket-taker, economical and scored with a flourish late in batting innings last season.

Those are three big ticks in SuperCoach BBL.
