Ex-Test captain Tim Paine appointed new coach of the Adelaide Strikers

Three years after he was forced to quit the Australian captaincy, Tim Paine is back in a key cricket role.

Tim Paine is one of the “best people” in cricket according to Australian great Justin Langer who has backed the former Test captain to excel in his new role as coach of the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash.

Paine has ascended to his first major role in Australian cricket since quitting as national skipper ahead of the 2021 Ashes after revelations of improper behaviour.

Langer was coach of the team at the time and despite the circumstances of his departure was adamant Paine was a person who had a lot to offer Australian cricket.

“(Paine) is one of the best people I’ve ever met in the game of cricket. He’s uber professional, he’s an outstanding person, he’s been an Australian Test captain and he’s going to be a great coach,” Langer said on Thursday.

“I’ve known from day one of meeting him how passionate he is about coaching, so now to be able to take the step up from player to assistant coach, to now be a head coach – and in the Big Bash, there’s only eight of them – so I think he’s going to do a great job.”

Having been an assistant coach last summer at the BBL outfit to Gillespie, who has since departed to take charge of Pakistan, Paine has been elevated to the top role at the Strikers on a two-year deal.

“After spending time in Adelaide last year I believe the Strikers team and the whole of South Australian cricket has huge potential and I’m looking forward to being part of taking it forward and winning a few trophies,” said Paine, who had reportedly been vying with former national coach Darren Lehmann for the job.

“Having been on the losing side when the Strikers defeated Hobart Hurricanes to claim their first title win in BBL07, I can vouch for the fantastic atmosphere created by the fans at Adelaide Oval.

“And the backing the boys received last season was a large factor in the success we experienced in the second half of BBL13, so we’re working hard to build on that momentum in the coming summer.

“I believe we have an immensely talented and versatile squad which we will finalise over the next few weeks.”

Paine, 39, captained Australia in 23 Tests before stepping down in November 2021 due to an occasion of improper conduct four years earlier.

He retired from all forms of cricket in March last year, and had since also had a spell as assistant coach of the Australia A team.

South Australia Cricket Association chief executive officer Charlie Hodgson said: “Tim’s leadership qualities, tactical insights and ability to foster a strong and united team environment within the Strikers’ playing group was a significant factor in the team’s success in reaching last summer’s Challenger final (in the BBL playoffs),” Hodgson said.

“We are also delighted with his clear vision to ensure the Strikers remain closely involved and strongly aligned to South Australia’s cricket development programs, and to further enhance the club’s standing among the State’s loyal and passionate cricket fans.”

The Strikes start their new BBL season on December 17 against Sydney Thunder in Canberra.
