Nova’s breakfast crew are trading studio mics for running shoes as ambassadors for this year’s Sunday Mail Transurban Bridge to Brisbane, and they’re already spilling some hilariously chaotic secrets about their race-day prep.

Breakfast anchor Mitch Lewis, a self-confessed novice runner, said his training regimen ahead of the September fun run mostly consists of “literally running late” to everything.

“You could say I’ve been preparing all my life,” Lewis joked.

He added that the ambassador gig has given him the perfect excuse to get active.

“I love this event because you don’t need to be a pro, beginners like me are welcome,” he said.

He also shared his post-race recovery strategy, which involves “booking a post-race massage and overstocking the Deep Heat.”

Bridge to Brisbane veteran David “Luttsy” Lutteral said he hopes to join the race again this year — pending his “old man’s back” — and has one key tip for newcomers: “The early Gateway climb takes its toll later in the race so factor that into your race plan.”

If he does hit the track, expect his signature look.

“I have a designated Lycra drawer at home, so hideously unmatching is highly likely,” he said.

Ash Bradnam, who’s no stranger to the Bridge to Brisbane, said he’s happily handed over the baton, and now prefers cheering others on from the sidelines.

“I’ve given up trying to match Robert DeCastella’s marathon record these days, so while my boots may be hung up, I love to encourage others to give running a go,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of warming up, adding: “Stretch like your thighs depend on it, or you’re going to need abseiling equipment to use the toilet in the days after.”

Comedian Nikki Osborne, the newest addition to the Nova team and described by her co-hosts as the “most competitive”, said her pre-race routine involves “poached eggs on toast” and an energetic playlist featuring “Eminem, Iggy Azalea and Geordie Kieffer.”

As for the rest of the team’s music picks, Luttsy said he’ll be running to “Pink Pony Club” on repeat, while Lewis plans to keep pace with the cinematic score from Lord of the Rings.

Entries for the September event are open, and runners are urged to secure early bird tickets at a discounted price.
