The Australian boxing legend used every trick in the book to help his fighter Hassan Hamdan claim victory on the Tim Tszyu undercard on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Hamdan had the upper hand in his 10-round light welterweight fight with Justin Frost before a head clash opened up a huge cut above Hamdan’s left eye in the fourth round.

“That is a horrific cut,” Ben Damon said on Main Event.

Blood immediately began pouring out of the gash and over Hamdan’s body, prompting the fight to be paused mid-round.

The official doctor tried to patch up Hamdan’s wound but shook his head and said it was “too big” for the fight to continue.

But seemingly just as the fight was about to be called off, Fenech screamed: “Let me fix it! Hey doc! Give me the chance to fix it!”

Fenech then attempted to patch up Hamdan’s cut with glue and somehow managed to persuade the referee to overrule the doctor’s instructions and let the fight continue.

It was a crucial call because had the fight been stopped before the fourth round ended, there would have been no result.

But Hamdan survived the last minute of the fourth round before the bout was finally stopped, claiming victory on points via unanimous decision.

Fenech’s strategic ploy to ensure his fighter got the win didn’t go unnoticed by the commentators.

Damon said in commentary on Main Event: “You have to acknowledge the influence Jeff Fenech has in the corner when he’s the trainer. He has presence and it has played a part here.”

Former boxing world champion Shawn Porter said: “Jeff did everything he needed to do to get out of that round. I do believe Mr Fenech played a role here.”

“There was a lot that went right there that shouldn’t have gone on there. Jeff Fenech was not supposed to be up on the apron (edge of the ring).

“You’re not allowed to be up there. That was just beautiful coaching right there by Jeff Fenech working his magic in terms of his star power here in Australia.”

The former world champion admitted in the ring post-fight to using “Fenech privileges” to his advantage.”

“I just knew that if we could get through that fourth round this belt was coming home with us,” Fenech said.

“Thanks to the ‘Fenech privleges’ and was got it done.”

Hamdan took the belt but he and Frost immediately agreed to a rematch once Hamdan’s wound is healed.

In the main event, Tim Tszyu is defending his interim WBO super welterweight title for the first time against Mexican Carlos Ocampo.
