Tim Tszyu has sent Jermell Charlo one hell of a message, defeating Carlos Ocampo with a first round knockout in his first world title defence on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

The Aussie was the overwhelming favourite to retain his interim WBO super welterweight title and he did it in a 72-second demolition job to take his record to 23-0 (17 KOs)

After Tszyu knocked Ocampo down with a right jab, the Mexican tried to continue but Tszyu finished him off with a barrage of shots that left the challenger sprawling on the canvas.

Ben Damon said on Main Event: “Don’t worry about the dogfight, Tim Tszyu is in a destructive mood today.

“He’s the risk taker, the soul taker, he’s the real deal ready for the world.

“He destroyed, he just took out a world class opponent inside a round with an absolutely brutal barrage.”

Tszyu said post-fight when asked about a fight with Charlo: “Plan your holidays, get your tickets, because we’re coming back with four belts.”

Tszyu didn’t need to take the fight, given he’s the mandatory challenger to take on undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo later this year.

But with Charlo recovering from a hand injury, Tszyu has remained active and showed he is the real deal.

This win over Ocampo was a walk in the park compared to Tszyu’s impressive ninth round knockout victory in March over Tony Harrison — the only man to have beaten Charlo.

Tszyu also followed in the footsteps of his father Kostya, who famously beat all five Mexicans he came up against in his career.

2.30pm - Aussie prevails in ‘war’

Sam Goodman has defeated Ra’eese Aleem in their IBF super bantamweight world title eliminator via split decision (117-111, 116-112, 112-116) with the best performance of his career.

The Aussie had the better of the fight but he came out swinging in the 12th and final round in his most aggressive and impressive fight yet.

Ben Damon said on Main Event Goodman prevailed in “an all-out war” and “went to another level”.

Brother reveals he took all Tim Tszyu’s money

Nikita Tsyu has revealed he took his brother to the cleaners during their poker battle the night before Sunday’s blockbuster.

Tim Tszyu said as he arrived at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre at 12.30pm on Sunday he had again been playing poker just hours out from his title fight.

He also happily said he had been at The Star Gold Coast gambling the night before Saturday’s weigh-ins.

Nikita said on the Main Event broadcast that he handed his brother a stinging defeat.

“I actually beat him. I took all his money,” the younger brother said with a grin.

Nikita also revealed a glimpse into his brother’s preparations and potential tactical changes.

“He’s an adaptive fighter as well. He’ll adjust his tactics for a new style,” Nikita said.

“He’s fighting a Mexican for the first time. So I feel like we’re going to see that pitbull in him fire up. Sometimes you have to be a little bit more technical. But when you go against someone like Carlos Ocampo, you have to get that dog out.”

Charlo’s bonkers theory about Tim Tszyu

Jermell Charlo has bizarrely claimed Tim Tszyu was helped to the biggest win of his career by salty tap water. The American withdrew from their proposed January showdown while recovering from a hand injury, but he is still talking smack ahead of their expected blockbuster later this year.

Asked about Tszyu’s most recent win over fellow American Harrison, Charlo suggested that something was off with the fighter who beat him for the WBC crown back in 2018.

“I feel like something ain’t right with him,” he said.

“Something about Australia.

“The way we get treated in America in fight week and all that, I felt like it was a little bit different.

“I know for a fact he didn’t have his business orientation as well.

“They probably put him in a nice hotel … they have nice hotels all over the world … but the secret thing about Australia is they got a little salt in their water.

“So just rehydrating is going to be bad. Just by the way you losing your weigh, cutting, then you putting salt water in your body, you holding on … maybe the weight cut was the issue.

“I’m not trying to make an excuse for him but … it’s a little different over there, bro.

“It had to be, just the audience, something wasn’t right with him.

Ocampo shrugs off ancient history

Carlos Ocampo could not care less that history is not on his side.

“It doesn’t matter. I’m not one of those fighters who got beaten by Tim’s father,” Ocampo said at Friday’s press conference.

“I’m Carlos Ocampo and I’m going to show the difference between them and us.

“I’m Carlos Ocampo and I’m going to show the difference between them and us.

“It’s going to be a real war but it’s not going to last very long and it’s going to be (a) win by knockout.”

No Limit promoter George Rose said Tszyu was taking a huge risk by even fighting Ocampo.

“What Tim is doing is absolutely crazy as far as global boxing goes, the risks he is taking but that’s what he’s about,” Rose said.

“He’s (Ocampo) got a hell of a record. He’s a guy who can hit and he’s here to spoil the party. It’s an absolute risk he’s taking. As far as global boxing goes, nobody else in the world is doing what Tim would do taking on a guy like Carlos Ocampo.

“The last guy who considered doing stuff like this is Sebastian Fundora and that didn’t end well for him. He got knocked out taking that risk. Tim is taking an absolute risk in this against a big guy like Carlos and I’m not going to feel 100 per cent comfortable until he makes weight in the morning.”
