AIC swimming championship - how it all unfolded today

Eight records tumbled at the AIC swimming championships as Australia’s junior swimming powerhouse, St Peters, won an eighth successive secondary title. But who won the primary championship? Revealed here.

St Peters Lutheran College claimed an eighth successive secondary AIC swimming championship while Iona College snared the primary championship in a thriller today at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

Kai Gilbert, Riley Meares and Finn Morton spearheaded St Peters to its senior win, while Iona claimed the primary championships.

There were also eight records:

+ 4x50m 16 years St Peters medley relay team of Ollie Connell, Hayden McGregor, Cael Eley and Lachlan Stuart fighting off a desperate Ashgrove to touch in 1:49.02;

+St Peters Lucas Wang (32.28 seconds) in the 15 Years Div 2 50m breaststroke;

+ Ashgrove’s Daniel Sadimenko (31.29) broke the record in the Year 5 Div 1 50m freestyle;

+ Finn Morton (St Peters) produced a time of 28.68 in his sizzling Div 2 15 Years backstroke effort.

+ Riley Meares (St Peters) stormed to a 50m butterfly time of 26.16 (15 Years, Div 2)

+ the St Peters Div 1 15 Years 4x50m freestyle relay team of Aiden Clark, Riley Meares, Finn Morton and Ishaan Metra;

+ the Div 1 16 Years 4x50m freestyle relay Marist team of Dylann Jennison, Joshua Mason, Noah Magoffin and Archer Mellifont;

+ the 4x50m freestyle Marist team of James Leigh, Edward Wild, Luca Martinuzzi and Noah Coco.

St Peters Lutheran College owned the medley relays, although Iona broke the mould by winning the Year 6 4x50m medley courtesy of Ryder Henrick, Hugo Wheeler, Harry Young St Ledger and Aidan Jones, with Villanova second (Fred Carter, Harrison Bligh, Lachlan Rees and Nate Economidis.

Earlier, St Peters produced a withering start to the championship when David Chippendale, Tom de Brito, Randel Ingram and Liam Vogel combined to win the open 4x50m medley relay from Marist College Ashgrove (Luca Martinuzzi, Noah Coco, Lachie Vink and James Leigh) and Villanova College.

Then was an early contender for race of the day when St Peters claimed the 4x50m 16 years medley relay, with Ollie Connell holding off Ashgrove’s Dylan Jennison in a freestyle sprint to the death.

It was a dramatic finale by Connell and Jennison to a great contest.

St Peters and Ashgrove continued to go one, two, this time in the 15 years 4x50m medley, although the St Laurence’s team of Javier Foster, Eugene Ryu, Jack Mahoney and Joseph Brock almost pinched second from Ashgrove.

The Iona 14 Years relay team of Cooper Townsend, Jacob Johns, Jesse Hamilton and Tyce Percy also placed in its event.

The 200m individual IM was claimed by the impressive Cael McLey.

In the 100m freestyle, podium finishes were shared around.

Iona’s Hunter Deane impressed with his win in the Year 5s, while Iona was on the board again when Hugo Wheeler (Year 6) powered to the wall.

St Peters then won the 12 Years (Ethan Schiemer) and 13 Years (Thomas Bridue), while Ashgrove’s Nicholas Osborn returned serve, claiming the 14 Years.

St Peters then went bang, bang, with wins in the 15 Years (Ishaan Mehra) and 16 Years (Ollie Connell), while in the hotly contested open 100m the rising Kai Gilbert (St Peters) touched first from Villanova’s Charlie Kerr who fought bravely.

The 50 breaststroke was also juggled around, with Wheeler (Iona) winning again (Year 6, Div 1) while Ashgrove’s Hugo Russo won the Div 2 12 Years and Marist’s Isaac Gervais the Div 1 12 Years.

St Peters Benedetti Christino won his Year 2 Div 2 breaststroke, while Laurie’s Michael Daley fought hard for second behind St Peters Rafael Rubio.

Villanova’s Harry Taylor was mighty impressive in his Div 2 Year 5 winning swim.

Villanova had another podium finish, this time in the 13 Years Div 1 when Charlie Campbell placed third, just behind Padua’s Harry Pritchard (second).

The Ashgrove crowd roared again when Osborn won for the second time, on this occasion in the 14 years 50m breaststroke, and also when Noah MacGoffin won (16 Years, Div 2).

St Peters continued to display its depth across the squad when Oliver Koehilz won followed by Wang’s record as mentioned earlier.

The big boys created a splash in the open 50m and 100m breaststroke events.

In the 50m Gilbert of St Peters won again, with Ashgrove’s James Leigh and Villa’s Oliver Heijo-Coogans close, while the 100m was won by Ingram whose time of 1:10.48 was just outside a competition record.

The 50m freestyle swimmers then flew down the pool, with Villanova’s Cameron Landers winning the Div 3 Year 5, Iona’s Blake Pushkey the Div 2 11 Years and Ashgrove’s Daniel Sadimenko (31.29) in record time.

The Year 6 Div 3 was claimed by Villanova’s Lachlan Rees, the Div 2 by that man Economidis (Villanova) while Padua’s Avery Pocock won the Div 1 50m freestyle.

Splitting the freestyle sprints was a monumental swim by Ashgrove’s Leigh James in the gruelling 400m freestyle.

James led all the way, with Gilbert (St Peters) keeping him honest from lane 5.

Back into the 50m freestyle dashes and it was time for the 12 Years, claimed by Ashok Kamalijith (St Peters, Div 4), Preston Webster (Villanova), Will Gregory (Villanova) and Hugo Russo (Ashgrove) from Villa’s Isaac Haywood.

Then came a succession of 13 Years 50 free races, with Ashgrove’s Matthew Dillane winning the Div 4, Villa’s Boris Vukelic the Div 3, St Peters Rory Green (Div 2) and St Peters again courtesy of Eli Bruggemann.

Iona had brought a strong 14 and 15 years freestyle sprint team to the pool and it showed.

Iona finished first in the Div 4 (Ethan Thacker, 14 Years), Div 3 (Lincoln Andrews), Div 4 (Riley Glendinning 15 Years) and Div 3 (Benjamin Gavranic, 15 Years).

Iona also won the open Div 4 (Francis Chitukudza).

Ashgrove’s Samuel McPherson (Div 1, 14 Years), Archer Mellifont (Div 1 16 Years) and Luca Martinuzzi (Div 2, open) also impressed for the Blue Gold squad, while St Patrick’s Lachlan Richards enjoyed his Div 3, 16 Years win.

St Peters claimed its 50m free wins courtesy of Toby Murray, David Chippendale (opens), Hayden McGregor and Aiden Clark.

Villanova’s Hugh MacLellan kickstarted the 50m backstroke with a Div 2 win (Year 5), followed by Ashgrove’s earlier record breaker, Sadimenko, claiming the Div 1 50m backstroke.

Iona’s Wheeler was on fire, winning the Div 1 Year 6 backstroke, while St Peters Ethan Schiemer won his Div 1 12 Years race.

Wheeler’s Iona squad mate, Cooper Townsend, also lit a fuse with a strong 14 Years Div 1 victory, after Ashgrove’s Tomas Fitzpatrick and St Peters Ethan Schiemer had claimed their respective Div 1 backstroke victories.

Then came Morton’s sizzling, record breaking Div 2 15 Years effort in 28.68 seconds, while

Ashgrove Archer Mellifont was a winner again (16 Years Div 1 backstroke).

The good times kept rolling on for St Peters Lutheran College, this time in the 200m 15 years freestyle when Meares prevailed.

In the crucial 4x50m freestyle relays which would help decide the primary championship, Ashgrove and Iona went one, two and two one in both Year 5 divisions.

Ash won the Div 2 (Carr, Patricks, Murie and McCurry) but Iona hit back in the next race courtesy of Werner, Troester, Jones and Young St Ledger.

It was still anyone’s primary championships, especially when Villanova’s Eddie Gregory, Jed Normington, Nicholas Bruce and Arthur Kirjan threw a cat among the pidgeons by winning the 12 Years relay.

St Peters (Gilbert, Lu, Hynd, Chen) continued to muster maximum points in the 13 Years Div 2, but there was a nice moment for the hard working St Laurence’s team of Harrison Cordie, Max Wynne, James Page and Thomas Corkill who finished second.

In the secondary events Marist’s challenge for the title continued courtesy of its open and 16 Years relay teams which both won - Russo, Skinner, Sloman and Farrelly in the 16s, and Barnes, Skinkel, Vink and Marco in the opens Div 2.

Ashgrove then made it three wins in a row as Cairns, Ryan, Kirkman and Sadimenko ploughed through the water in the Year 5 Div 1, winning from Iona’s team of Oliver Burrows, Pushkey and Deane.

Iona’s Wheeler had the winning touch again, this time helping his Year 6 Div 1 team teammates of Aidan Johns, Ryder Henrick and James Draper to the winners post.

St Peters Midro Bowie then hung on to get first for his 12 Years Div 1 freestyle side after a magnificent surge from Ashgrove’s Isaac Gervais who was closing with every stroke.
