THE MATCHES
On Marist No.1, Ashgrove’s batsmen dominated to bat Paddies’ out of the contest across the morning session.
Nickelson was a part of an Ashgrove side which amassed an unbeatable 253 against St Patrick’s College.
After Nickelson’s rousing 83, Louis Morris blazed 52 from 37 balls as Ashgrove reached 253.
Morris had a day out after opener Jack Watson (55) had laid a foundation at the start.
The time honoured right arm medium pace bowler Matthew Pereira was tremendous for St Patrick’s, taking 3-38 while Alexander Bullock held it together under pressure to claim 2-37.
However, the Paddies’ batting just could not stand up to the multi-pronged Marist attack.
Joey Laner, William Easter, Morris, Flynn Cleary, Samuel Lewis, Archie Murray and
Samuel Wilcox hunted as a pack, each taking at least one wicket while keeping things tight.
Mitchell Hartshorn stood up to the Ashgrove attack for more than an hour which was a credit to him.
At Andrew Slack Oval, Villanova’s Roman Dunne made 85 from 101 balls and around him
Ollie Chalmers (36), Zac Joyce (34), Finn Thallon (41) and Mitchell Francis (33) kept their side moving against Padua.
Villa amassed a match winning 5-271, with Francis’ spectacular 33-ball sortie sending his side ballooning beyond 250.
Dunne struck eight fours and lofted four sixes during his 101 ball assault that would have had commuters on busy Manly Road twisting their heads to see what all the excitement was about.
For Padua Will Webster (2-48) did his job under pressure, as did Harry Thornton (six overs, 1-21) who also scored 12 not out.
High praise to both of them.
Padua’s Cameron Plackett then counterattacked with a marvellous knock, blasting 71 from 84 balls before Francis snared his wicket.
His performance was the cornerstone of an innings which reached just 153.
It was a team bowling performance, but Ned Godwin finished with 3-27 and Francis 2-12.
However, around them Henrik Frederiksen, Joey Watson, Lachlan Whaites and Zac Joyce all picked up wickets, with Whaites’ conceding just 14 runs from six overs.
At Lindum, Iona opener Liam Carter had the best seat in the house as Maplass scored 112 not out from 75 balls.
Carter lent on his back at the non-strikers end as Malpass hit 13 fours and five sixes to give his side an early finish.
Carter did well also – he made 46 not out from 50 balls – but he played second fiddle to a rampaging Malpass.
Throughout the batting mayhem Saints’ Lars Sagorski tried hard, with his six overs conceding just 27 runs. But everyone else failed to curtail Malpass.
Earlier, St Peters’ innings had been inflated to 166 after Jacob Thomas (51, 24 balls) went nuts.
He slammed four sixes and four fours to give his side a chance, although Malpass and Carter then made that total look small. Thomas also claimed a wicket.
Harley Malpass also claimed three wickets with his medium pace in a man of the match performance.
Lachlan McClure was also outstanding (2-18, 10 overs) while Adam Richter (1-23, eight overs) was just as good.
At Runcorn, Aiden Mohr and Daniel Gray were a class above as St Laurence’s College (285) beat St Edmund’s (106), while leg spin bowler Lachlan Wigan starred.
The consistent Mohr looked set for a century, making 86 from 81 balls, while Gray hit four sixes on his way to 71.
That partnership, coupled with Thomas Stenhouse’s 26 ball cameo for 32 not out, pushed the match beyond Eddies’ reach.
In the St Edmund’s innings Max Halls dug in to top score with 17 (64 balls) while Charles Cass (12, 56 balls) also put value on his wicket.
Young leggie Wigan was all over the Eddies’ batsmen, bowling two of the top order on his way to 3-21.
Bright fast bowling prospect Thomas Vaseo also gained valuable First XI experience, taking 1-24 from his 10 overs.
