Trade buzz: All the latest trade news from across the AFL

The Power went hard at talls in the 2023 trade period, now one of them looks to already be headed out the door after failing to keep his place in the best 23 this season.

'Feels like overs': Port going too hard?

Ivan Soldo is keen to cross to St Kilda in the trade period after only a single season at Port Adelaide where Jordon Sweet leapfrogged over him to grab the club’s No. 1 ruck spot.

The Saints are on track to secure former Richmond ruckman Soldo, who is still contracted to the Power.

The Saints need more ruckmen after delisting Tom Campbell, with ruck-forward Jack Hayes also drawing interest from rival clubs.

At Alberton on Monday, Soldo said injuries had not helped his first year at the Power.

“I’ll have to wait for my review tomorrow and see what happens there but still contracted,” he said. “Injuries have held me back, which wasn’t great, but that’s the role of the ruckman –you’re always copping something.”

Port Adelaide has another backup in Dante Visentini so is well enough stocked as it also chases rival players including Harry Perryman, Jack Lukosius and Isaac Cumming.

Port Adelaide gave up picks 41 and 49 and Fremantle’s 2024 second-rounder but got back a fourth-rounder and pick 50 for Soldo last year.

But the 28-year-old played only eight senior games for the Power as he also suffered a knee injury that set him back early in the season.

Soldo might hope to play in a ruck tandem with Rowan Marshall, who was in dominant form for the Saints this year.

While he would not be guaranteed game time it would at least allow Marshall to push forward at times, with Soldo an adequate pinch-hitting forward at times at Richmond.

It was a tough initiation for Soldo whose partner Chelsea Becirevic moved with him to Adelaide but then jetted off to Dubai to work while the pair continued their long-distance relationship.

Power forward Charlie Dixon is expected to retire after the club’s preliminary finals exit, while Travis Boak is still pondering whether to play on next year.

Todd Marshall was cleared after having brain scans last week after his fifth concussion in three seasons, but was still battling the mental toll of the latest hit and would not have played in a Grand Final if the club progressed through this week.

He signed a new five-year deal to the end of 2029 at the start of the season, but the lack of force in the latest concussion would be a worry for Marshall.

Playing in such a physical role as a key forward will make it hard for him to avoid collisions and head knocks.

Under AFL rules a player who medically retires through concussion is paid his salary but the club receives only limited reprieve under the salary cap for the next three seasons after he retires.

There is no suggestion Marshall is at that stage, but his concussions this year will be cause for concern for Ken Hinkley and his football department.
