KFC SuperCoach TV episode 2

Buy or sell? Trade or hold?

With five trades to use and time running out until the season restart, pressure is rising for SuperCoach players to make decisions on who to keep and who to add to your squad before Round 2 lockout.

Don’t panic. The experts are here to help. Here is there quick take on the 10 most traded out and traded in players.

MOST TRADED OUT

Dylan Roberton $260,400 DEF

Al Paton: HOLD. Has a safe spot in Saints defence which is more than we can say for guys like Cumming and Zerk-Thatcher. Could trade if you have no other issues but not top priority.

Tim Michell: HOLD. There’s not enough value in defence to justify moving him on, especially if you have Brandon Zerk-Thatcher. At least Roberton will be playing.

Dwayne Delmenico (2019 SuperCoach winner): TRADE immediately. Looks a big chance to decline in value over the next two weeks.

Dan Batten: TRADE. Price is set to go backwards and Crow Tom Doedee shapes as the perfect sideways option.

T he Phantom: TRADE. Might come back to bite me but there look to be too many playmakers in the Saints’ back half now. Deal with rookies first, though.

Paul Dunn (Rage Trades): HOLD. He won’t play that badly again. He is a lock to get a game.

Daniel Begala (SuperCoach Investor): TRADE: It’s a no-brainer converting the luckless Saint into Jeremy Howe if you’ve got the capital to do so.

Ben Cavarra $123,900 FWD

AP: TRADE. Ideal candidate if you didn’t start Sam Sturt or Curtis Taylor. Or you could wait a week and use him to get Izak Rankine.

TM: HOLD. Don’t underestimate the value of a loophole rookie. If you have Max King stuck as emergency and he scores 100, a non-scoring player is essential. That’s assuming Cavarra is dropped for Round 2.

DD: HOLD. No need to rush into trades at that price point unless you have missed a cash cow rookie (Sturt, Georgiades, Taylor)

DB: TRADE. A snowball’s chance in hell of playing in Round 2 and there is no shortage of forward rookies to replace him with.

TP: TRADE. Follow the money.

PD: TRADE. He will struggle to get another game and will drop in price.

SI: TRADE: If I could, I would, but I’ve got bigger issues to address.

Andrew Brayshaw $382,800 FWD/MID

AP: TRADE. Can’t see the breakout happening this year.

TM: TRADE. The depth of rookies up forward is reason enough to trade Brayshaw. Flip him to Izak Rankine or Sam Sturt and use the money to bring Jack Viney or Jeremy Howe in.

DD: TRADE. You can’t score points sitting on the bench.

DB: TRADE. His time-on-ground stats in Round 1 are a concern, so you’re better off looking at another forward mid-pricer with greater upside.T

TP: TRADE/HOLD. Not a must-trade but can Brett Bewley score at a similar rate for far less?

PD: HOLD. We have found out that he was recovering from an injury leading into round 1.

SI: TRADE: He did miss two late goal opportunities against Essendon, but Brayshaw appears to be a long way back in the pecking order of the Fremantle engine room.

Marcus Bontempelli $623,000 MID

AP: TRADE: Fixture isn’t kind and he’s one midfield premo I can live without.

TM: No idea. The prospect of three consecutive tags is a concern, but if you trade him it’s just another premium you need to find. I’m leaning towards hold unless it’s vital to other trade moves. That could change by Thursday.

DD: TRADE – In this shortened season we need as many points as possible (Trade Happy), with the games best taggers lining up over the next few weeks, move him on.

DB: TRADE. Faces stoppers Jack Steele and Matt de Boer in his first fortnight back.

TP: TRADE/HOLD. With taggers waiting, Bont is the one to make way for restructure/cash generation purposes. Otherwise, hold.

PD: TRADE if you need cash. He will drop in price. But he also won’t play that badly again.

SI: TRADE: I’m leaning towards trading the Bulldogs star, but I think this is the line-ball decision that might bite a few trigger-happy coaches on the derrière.

Will Giants youngster Tom Green hold his spot for Round 2? Picture. Phil Hillyard
Will Giants youngster Tom Green hold his spot for Round 2? Picture. Phil Hillyard

Tom Green $166,800 MID

AP: HOLD. Hopefully he keeps his spot but if not I’ll put him on the bench and play McInerney.

TM: TRADE. Hard to see how he makes the Giants’ Round 2 side. No choice but to trade if that’s the case. Don’t be afraid to swing Dustin Martin or Lachie Whitfield to midfield for a few weeks to downgrade him to a forward rookie on the bubble.

DD: HOLD. Wouldn’t be overly concerned from just one game, not a lot of players to trade down to and has good scoring potential.

DB: TRADE. The returning Callan Ward is set to take Green’s spot, but will there be any midfield candidates to trade him to?

TP: HOLD. If named that is. Still has a game style suited to SuperCoach.

PD: TRADE. He struggled in Round 1 and may not get a game as others are now in front of him at the Giants.

SI: TRADE: Green’s job security is shaky – at best – so I’d rank him the best candidate for an upgrade to the raging bull, Jack Viney, if you can wrangle the cash.

Darcy MacPherson $443,800 FWD/MID

AP: TRADE. Gold Coast forwards and “breakout” very rarely go together.

TM: TRADE. There’s far too much value around MacPherson to hold him. Flip him to teammate Hugh Greenwood or Christian Petracca, who posted hundreds in Round 1.

DD: TRADE. Should have never been in your team to begin with although you are not alone, the pre-season hype machine claimed plenty of victims (over 16,000 teams).

DB: HOLD. See how he fares in Round 2 – if he stinks it up again, move him on.

TP: TRADE. And blame only yourself.

PD: TRADE. Too much cash to hold in him. Go to someone more likely to score.

SI: TRADE: Too many better options available at that price point and for a small splash of cash (about $70K) you could acquire guaranteed top-six forward Isaac Heeney.

Essendon defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher.
Essendon defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher.
Crows draftee Fischer McAsey.
Crows draftee Fischer McAsey.

Brandon Zerk-Thatcher $189,000 DEF

AP: TRADE. Fingers crossed he keeps his spot but resigned to fact he probably won’t which could leave me staring at a doughnut.

TM: TRADE. If he makes Essendon’s Round 2 team, it’ll be a huge relief. Hard to see that being the case with Cale Hooker and Patrick Ambrose to return. Bring in Tom Doedee or Jeremy Howe if you have the money.

DD: HOLD. Should increase in value with little to no other options available.

DB: TRADE on the assumption he will make way for Cale Hooker and Patrick Ambrose. If he survives, consider holding.

TP: TRADE/HOLD depending if he’s named in Round 2. In defence, you can’t trade him out if he’s playing.

PD: TRADE if you get an option to. He may not get a game.

SI: TRADE: As good as gone if the experienced cavalry return in Round 2. If not, it’s a hold and small price rise given his achievable break even (23).

Fischer McAsey $184,900 DEF

AP: TRADE: Could lose money. If you’ve got $80k turn him into Tom Doedee.

TM: TRADE. He won’t score 16 every round, but McAsey also isn’t going to generate value quickly while that sits in his cycle. He’s almost a straight swap to Stephen Hill if he’s fit.

DD: HOLD McAseyMcFaceyFace. Unless you are trading to BZT or Noble, no other decent options available.

DB: TRADE. A score of 16 in Round 1 won’t cut the mustard.

TP: TRADE/HOLD. Should be better in Round 2 if he survives Tom Doedee’s return. Go up, unless Will Gould returns, if he’s not selected.

PD: TRADE. Doedee back will mean he drops out of the side.

SI: TRADE: You’re overcapitalised on this penny stock, unfortunately, so look to off-load for a lower-priced rookie who performed better in Round 1.

Tim English $448,400 RUCK

AP: TRADE: It could be the year to try a cheaper ruckman, but he’s not the one.

TM: TRADE. To Sam Naismith. Now.

DD: TRADE. Bring Naismith in.

DB: TRADE. A cash grab to money-maker Sam Naismith is very attractive for English owners.

TP: TRADE. Hello, Sam Naismith.

PD: HOLD. He had a good second half against Grundy and should recover.

SI: TRADE: Naismith is another no-brainer at his price point, $251K, but English’s time will certainly come.

Check the fixture before trading Max Gawn.
Check the fixture before trading Max Gawn.

Max Gawn $697,100 RUCK

AP: HOLD ... I think. Still agonising over this one but keep coming back to how hard it will be to get him back if I punt him now. Can’t see him dropping below $650k.

TM: HOLD. If you trade him and he scores 200 against Marc Pittonet you’ll be furious.

DD: HOLD. Sneaky chance to hit his break even of 172 this week and could average 150 over the next three weeks. Can’t miss those points.

DB: HOLD. Could average 150 points across his next month – trade at your peril.

TP: HOLD. Goodbye, Sam Naismith.

PD: HOLD. He has a great run coming up. Only trade if you really need the cash.

SI: TRADE/HOLD: The most pivotal decision in SuperCoach beckons for the bearded giant and I am leaning – at this stage – towards trading given the unrivalled flexibility the injection of cash provides to my portfolio.

MOST TRADED IN

Sam Sturt $123,900 FWD

AP: BUY. If he’s named for Round 2 you have to have him. Won’t score 100 every week though.

TM: BUY. YES. A rookie with a negative break even is SuperCoach gold and Sturt has decent job security. The only issue is a back complaint could keep him out of Round 2.

DD: BUY. Cash cow #1.

DB: BUY. Under an injury cloud but holds the lowest break even in the competition ahead of Round 2. Just watch out for teams to see if he’s named.

TP: BUY. BUY. BUY. Looks to be back on track for Round 2 and will enjoy a steep price rise – one you can’t miss out on this year.

PD: BUY. However, just beware that he may miss through injury. If he does then wait a week.

SI: BUY: He’s going to pop to the tune of $69k after Round 2, so it’s a must-buy for investors alike.

Jeremy Howe got off to a flying start in Round 1.
Jeremy Howe got off to a flying start in Round 1.

Jeremy Howe $431,900 DEF

AP: BUY. Magpies nut and SuperCoach expert Paige Cardona says Jack Magden will hold down a defensive post at the Pies, freeing up Howe. That’s good enough for me.

TM: BUY. Howe averaged 90 points or more in three consecutive seasons and is about to soar in price. Proven scoring history plus cash generation equals KFC SuperCoach trade success.

DD: BUY. Appears to be back to his intercepting/points scoring role of years gone by.

DB: BUY. Intercept possessions will be even more valuable in SuperCoach with shortened quarters.

TP: BUY. A top-six candidate at that price? Get on.

PD: BUY. Got off to a flying start and is a solid option at that price.

SI: BUY: Looked a picture of health in Round 1 and has historically featured as a top 6-10 defender when injury has not intervened. Buy, Buy, Buy.

Jack Viney $439,300 MID

AP: BUY. Only needs to score around 100 to gain $100k in a few weeks.

TM: BUY if you want a quick cash grab. PASS if you want a season keeper.

DD: PASS. Tough to fit him in given price point and doubtful he will be a top-eight scorer.

DB: PASS. In the short term he may net you $50-100k, but he has never averaged above 100 points across his career.

TP: BUY. At worst, he becomes a fallen premium in a month. And the money could help bring Howe in for a rookie.

PD: BUY. He will rocket in price with a good game. Stepping stones like Viney are the best way to make cash this season.

SI: BUY: An unblemished pre-season was only trumped by a sublime Round 1 performance that put his doubters to shame. This is a new Jack Viney.

Sam Naismith $251,500 RUCK

AP: PASS. Will he go up in value? Yes. Will he score 100 every week? Highly doubtful. Could still come into my team though.

TM: PASS if your ruckmen are Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn. BUY if your second ruckman is anyone else.

DD: BUY. Tough to bring him in if you haven’t started with him but if you can go for it.

DB: BUY. Trade him in for just about any ruckman besides Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy.

TP: BUY. If you haven’t got Max Gawn at R2. Or if you can solve all your other issues at the same time, which includes nailing the right cash cows, consider him at R3.

PD: BUY. Naismith had a great game against one of the up-and-coming rucks in O’Brien. He has the No.1 spot at the Swans.

SI: BUY: Fit, firing and rucking Han Solo for the Swans. Dominated ROB in Round 1 and could be $500k by Round 5. SHORT: Gawn. LONG: Naismith.

John Noble $215,400 DEF

AP: BUY: One cheap defender we can rely on (hopefully).

TM: BUY. There might only be 2-3 defenders under $250,000 who play in Round 2 and he’s one.

DD: BUY. Looks comfortable at the elite level and should hold his spot.

DB: BUY. The lack of options in defence mean Noble is close to a must, especially if Zerk-Thatcher is dropped.

TP: BUY. You don’t have him?

PD: BUY. Noble is cemented in that Pies side and is value at this price.

SI: BUY: Played like the Collingwood quarterback in Round 1 and looks certain to acquire plenty of uncontested disposals across half-back. Lock him in.

Isaac Heeney takes a big grab at Swans training.
Isaac Heeney takes a big grab at Swans training.

Isaac Heeney $510,700 FWD/MID

AP: PASS: Frustrating to miss that 152 after picking him for the past five years but I can’t fit another premo in my forward line.

TM: BUY. Impact players are going to dominate in shorter quarters and Heeney is exactly that. He doesn’t need huge possession numbers to score well (16 disposals in Round 1).

DD: PASS. Won’t kick four goals every week in the shortened format and playing deep forward his scores will be very up and down.

DB: PASS. Buddy’s injury means he is likely to spend most of his time forward, which is bad news for SuperCoaches.

TP: PASS. Huge in Round 1 and can have a big say with limited possession but shouldn’t be a priority just yet.

PD: BUY. He had a good Round 1 but he did kick four goals for that score. He won’t score this well every week but we have been waiting for this break out.

SI: BUY: He’s been a walk-up start to The Begala Brigade for the past 3-4 seasons, so this one hurts. Heeney will be firmly entrenched in the top six forwards.

Justin McInerney $123,900 MID

AP: BUY: Looks like one of the top midfield rookies.

TM: BUY if you aren’t sacrificing too much. Bringing in Sturt and Curtis Taylor is more important.

DD: BUY. Must-have.

DB: BUY. Has one of the lowest break evens but watch out for teams – he is no certainty to be picked for Round 2.

TP: BUY. If you need a midfield rookie – and already have Tyler Brown. The young Swan should get opportunity and is efficient off half-back.

PD: PASS. I am not sold on his job security and role at the Swans. Horse has done this to us before with rookies.

SI: BUY: The Swans have pivoted their portfolio towards youth and McInerney looks to be one rookie certain to benefit from increased opportunity.

Sam Jacobs $348,400 RUCK

AP: PASS: Remember he rucked against Darcy Fort in Round 1.

TM: PASS. Just get Sam Naismith for almost $100,000 cheaper.

DD: PASS. Prefer Naismith and good luck to him vs Goldstein and Grundy over the next three weeks.

DB: PASS. Jacobs comes up against Brodie Grundy and Todd Goldstein in his first month back.

TP: PASS. Naismith will serve the same purpose for $100k less.

PD: PASS. Naismith is cheaper and should score similarly.

SI: PASS: His performance in Round 1 was impressive, however I suspect there’s greater upside in Sam Naismith for that pivotal role at R2.

Sam Jacobs has a new lease of life at the Giants.
Sam Jacobs has a new lease of life at the Giants.

Chad Wingard $412,300 FWD/MID

AP: PASS: I like his work on social media but not in my SuperCoach team.

TM: PASS. I’d want to see him deliver the type of performances he did in Round 1 for at least another few weeks.

DD: PASS. Very tough draw, if he averages 100 through this period, jump on board.

DB: PASS. Hawthorn’s horror Round 2-5 draw doesn’t bode well for Wingard.

TP: BUY. A top-six candidate in my eyes, meaning he’s severely underpriced. Don’t base your trade plan around the move, though.

PD: PASS. He can have a good game like Round 1 but he can also put in some really low scores too. Too inconsistent.

SI: PASS: I’d prefer to take the risk on Connor Rozee ($422k) or Heeney over The Chad.

Shannon Hurn $562,200 DEF

AP: PASS: Costs too much.

TM: NOT NOW. Jump on when he’s closer to $500,000, even if that’s mid-season.

DD: PASS. Can’t see him enjoying playing at Metricon.

DB: PASS. Can’t see him scoring as well in the Gold Coast hub.

TP: PASS. Could still have another big SuperCoach year in him but a premium defender trade shouldn’t be at the top of your list.

PD: PASS. I am writing off Round 1. I just don’t know if he can keep this scoring up and I am not sure how his calf muscles will go with the fast pace of 16min quarters week after week.

SI: PASS: Will undoubtedly feature amid the top three defenders, however, Jeremy Howe is the primary target in defence.
