KFC SuperCoach: 10 point-of-difference picks that will set your team apart from the rest
Jack Viney, Jeremy Howe and Sam Naismith are dominating the KFC SuperCoach headlines. What about the stars that are being left untouched? We outline the best unique picks that can edge you closer to the $50,000 prize.
Supercoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from Supercoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
There is no better year to have a penchant for the point-of-difference (POD) pick in KFC SuperCoach than 2020.
Having five trades in our arsenal for Round 2 allows teams to think outside the square ahead of the restart, with six less rounds than usual to contend with this season.
It’ll bring about new strategies and mean players can be move aggressive with their trades.
And the best way to play SuperCoach on the edge is to bring in a point-of-difference pick – a player with less than 10 per cent ownership.
Left virtually untouched, these hidden gems can set you apart from the rest and give you a massive advantage if they come off – and edge you closer to the $50,000 prize on offer.
Here are the prime unique candidates ahead of Round 2, with some familiar SuperCoach names among them.
DEFENCE
Tom Stewart - Geelong ($533,200, DEF)
Round 1 score: 100
Ownership: 9.2 per cent
Tom Stewart might just be the topscoring defender after the first five rounds, playing three of his next four games at Kardinia Park – where he averaged 108 points in 2019. Three of these matches are against the bottom three teams from last year – Carlton, Melbourne and Gold Coast. Tempted?
Zac Williams - GWS ($551,700, DEF)
Round 1 score: DNP
Ownership: 3.4 per cent
Williams’ ownership would have been through the roof if he was fit to play in Round 1. The Giants smooth-mover was the fourth ranked defender for SuperCoach average last year and with an ownership of just 3.4 per cent, you can reap the rewards while most SuperCoaches watch on with envy.
Tom Doedee - Adelaide ($273,700, DEF)
Round 1 score: DNP
Ownership: 2.8 per cent
Intercepts are set to be an even more significant scoring source this season – take Jeremy Howe’s monster 154-point effort in Round 1 – and Tom Doedee will be one of the major beneficiaries. With cash cows few and far between in defence, the returning Doedee shapes as an ideal stepping stone to a premium. He proved he is capable of producing reliable on-field scoring his debut season, going at 82 points per game.
MIDFIELD
Elliot Yeo - West Coast ($584,400, MID)
Round 1 score: 57
Ownership: 5.4 per cent
His Round 1 score is off-putting but the Gold Coast hub the Eagles are playing in will suit Elliot Yeo’s game perfectly. Yeo generates his points from contested ball and tackles, with plenty on offer at the stoppage heavy venue of Metricon Stadium. Yeo is known for his high ceiling and faces the Suns in Round 2 – who he averages 141 points against from his last two matches.
Luke Parker - Sydney ($570,700, MID)
Round 1 score: 125
Ownership: 0.5
A player this rare is considered an ‘Uber-POD’ – not even his mates are touching him. Parker could prove to be a worthwhile unique pick given he plays three of his first four games at the SCG, where he averaged 111.6 points per game last season. Are you brave enough to take the punt?
Andrew McGrath - Essendon ($399,400, MID)
Round 1 score: 113
Ownership: 5.6 per cent
I had a very close look at Andrew McGrath in the opening round after trading him out hours before his game. He looked in ripping nick in his new role as a full-time midfielder and his 113 point outing certainly won’t be a one-off for the former No. 1 draft pick.
RUCK
Rowan Marshall - St Kilda ($598,700, RUCK)
Round 1 score: 92
Ownership: 8 per cent
SuperCoaches were scared off 2019 revelation Rowan Marshall when it was announced he and Paddy Ryder would be sharing ruck duties. But St Kilda coach Brett Ratten flagged early this week that the Saints may experiment with Marshall as their sole ruckman. If this is the case, he looms as the only ruckman who can compete with Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn and his stocks are set to soar.
FORWARD
Hugh Greenwood - Gold Coast ($463,100, FWD/MID)
Round 1 score: 116
Ownership: 9.4 per cent
Like Yeo, Greenwood is set to benefit from a run of games on the Gold Coast. Greenwood posted 116 points at the venue in Round 1 despite a disappointing display from his side, spending much more time in the midfield than he did at his former club.
Jonathon Ceglar - Hawthorn ($417,00, FWD/RUCK)
Round 1 score: 101
Ownership: 3.6 per cent
Ceglar was one of 10 ruckman who reached a SuperCoach ton in the opening round holding Hawthorn’s number one mantle. While the Hawks face a tough early run, likely opponents of Darcy Fort (Geelong) and Ivan Soldo/Toby Nankervis in his next two matches loom as big scoring games.
Darcy Fort - Geelong ($264,800, FWD/RUCK)
Round 1 score: 94
Ownership: 1.2 per cent
The Cats pulled a selection shock picking Fort over Rhys Stanley and he produced a promising 94-point effort despite Sam Jacob’s dominance. Fort will be matched-up against Carlton replacement Marc Pittonet and aforementioned Jon Ceglar in the first fortnight back. Like Doedee, Fort could prove to be a worthwhile cash grab and may end up being a keeper if he continues this kind of scoring.
