Doctor’s Orders: Top GWS KFC SuperCoach trade targets for the run home

Need to roll the dice on a left-field move to change your KFC SuperCoach fortunes? The experts at Doctor SuperCoach have identified a bargain-priced forward who could turn your season around.

Hot and cold players for Round 12 | KFC SuperCoach AFL

As we turn down the home straight, many KFC SuperCoach sides are beginning to mould in very similar forms.

It can often be the case in the classic version of KFC SuperCoach, the in-form and popular players only get more popular as the season goes on and it can be difficult to differentiate your side from your mates and the rest of the competition.

So let’s take a look at a few point of difference (POD) options to consider. More precisely, some options fresh off a bye at the GWS Giants. The reason for this is simple: GWS play just one top eight side for the remainder of the season and, of course, don’t have a bye left!

ZAC WILLIAMS $468,000 DEF – 3 per cent ownership

The dashing defender looks a bargain buy at a touch under $470K. Williams had an injury interrupted first half of the season, but since returning has put together two triple-figure scores. However, these scores came in different ways.

The first was more characteristic of Williams — 26 touches, 20 by foot, and providing plenty of run and carry on his way to 112 points. In his most recent outing against the Bombers, he gathered only 13 touches, but still found his way to 105 points with 11 of his 13 touches effective, five being intercepts and 54 per cent contested – well up on his average of 40 per cent in 2019 (when he played a lot more in the midfield) and 29 per cent in 2018. It’s great to see Williams has the ability to ton up even when he isn’t racking up huge disposal numbers.

Williams averaged 101.6 last year and 93.9 the year prior, so there is no question about his scoring ability. The theory is sometimes floated that he and Lachie Whitfield take points off each other, so can you have both in your side? Absolutely you can.

The Giants pair, or the “dash brothers” as they are now being called, complement each other and have both played in the same team for much of the past two seasons and their averages tell us all we need to know. When Whitfield returned to the side last year in Round 17, Williams produced scores of 99, 103, 70, 124, 96, 106, 100, 84, 137 and 71 (Grand Final) for an average of 99. With a break-even of 65, the time is now to bring him in.

STEPHEN CONIGLIO $554,700 MID – 23 per cent ownership

OK, so Coniglio isn’t really a POD, but trading him in at this stage of the season would be unorthodox. In 2019, Coniglio averaged 120 points in wins and 81 in losses and with a kind upcoming fixture, GWS would be expected to win nearly all of the upcoming matches.

As for this season, Coniglio is doing exactly what we expect of him: big numbers inside the contest, tackling hard and producing consistently solid KFC SuperCoach scores.

Coniglio has notched 20 possessions in his past six matches, as well as averaging 4.5 tackles, 5.5 clearances and 114.2 KFC SuperCoach points.

Bringing him in could reap an instant benefit — he loves a Battle of the Bridge encounter. The Giants skipper is averaging 109.3 points against the Swans in his past seven matches, including some big finals performances.

With more “best 18” bye rounds coming in the future, having players with high ceilings can really propel you up the ranks. Coniglio scored a mammoth 207 just last season, proving he has one of the highest ceilings in the game.

TIM TARANTO $539,700 MID – 1 per cent ownership

If you’re looking for a genuine POD, they don’t come much more unique than Taranto. The hard-nosed Giant is back in the side after missing the opening six rounds after a shoulder reconstruction and is now clicking into top gear.

The Giants’ 2019 best-and-fairest winner has produced scores of 81, 111, 126 and 92. These are solid numbers, but he spent a bit more time forward in his return game, and it was only a disappointing disposal efficiency of 50 per cent that saw his 32 touches last round equate to only 92 points.

You know what you’re going to get from Taranto. In his breakout year of 2019 he averaged 102.4, he is producing near identical numbers in his first month of 2020. However, he doesn’t come cheap. Due to his consistency he has fallen only $16,000 from his starting price to $539,700, but what you will be getting is a player in just 1 per cent of sides.

Just like Coniglio, Taranto also averaged much more in wins than losses in 2019, recording a 109 average in wins compared to 93 in losses.

Another factor to consider is given Taranto has already missed so much footy this season, you would imagine there would be a number of other Giants’ midfielders far more likely to be rested throughout this frenetic finish to the home-and-away season.

JEREMY CAMERON $403,200 FWD – 3 per cent ownership

No POD article would be complete without something truly left-field to get your mind ticking over, and Jeremy Cameron is that man.

Times are tough in the KFC SuperCoach world and cash cows are not as easy to come by as we might hope, so finding a capable option around the $400K mark may be the only option some are left with.

Cameron has a high ceiling, and equally he can have you pulling your hair out if he has a quiet game. But could we see Cameron kickstart a hot streak against the Swans? He has produced scores of 114 and 139 in recent years against the Giants’ home state rivals.

Let’s be honest, Cameron hasn’t quite hit his straps this season with only two three-figure scores, which has seen his price fall $100K. But we know what Cameron at his best can do.

Jeremy Cameron could produce something special in the run home.

Scores of 152, 134, 163 and 168 are some of his highest over the past couple of years. The Giants play Sydney this week then West Coast but are yet to play Adelaide, Carlton, Fremantle, and Melbourne – a few likely bottom-eight sides that could represent an opportunity for a bag of goals and a big SuperCoach output.

Again, in a “Best 18” scenario, these high ceiling players become extra valuable. We receive almost a free hit, where a poor score will fall outside of our best 18 scorers so sometimes rolling the dice is a risk worth taking. In 2019, Cameron recorded an unbelievable 110 KFC SuperCoach points in wins and just 66 points in losses.

If you need a cheap forward and have a hunch this key forward is ready to go bang with the easy fixtures coming up, prepare to roll those dice.
