The Western Jets product will be the first Jet to be taken with the prized pick. The previous best result for the TAC Cup club, Shannon Grant, who was taken by Sydney at No.3 in 1994.

Here are nine things you did not know about the newest member of the No.1 club.

** Rayner was nicknamed ‘Hollywood’ when he was nine by a junior coach at Hillside. Why? “When I used to play I used to just kick goals, not do any defence or anything,” Rayner said. “They said I was there to put on a show.”

** In under-16s Rayner kicked 14.6 in a match, including eight goals in the first quarter.

** Rayner’s poor time-trial was actually worse than reported. A time of 7min 57sec has been doing the rounds, but we understand it was actually about 10 seconds slower than that.

** It was Rayner’s older brother, Lockie, who dared him to rock a Dustin Martin haircut at the national championships. But Rayner didn’t cop much chirp from opponents … probably because he was too busy kicking goals.

** Rayner grew up around the corner from Hillside Football Club. He won four or five junior flags and six best-and-fairests — all stored in a cabinet above his bed.

** Rayner grew up a passionate Essendon fan. He liked David Zaharakis because they both wore No.11.

** Rayner was once cut from the under-12s Victorian squad because he was too small.

** Collingwood recruiters asked Rayner to describe himself as a car. “There’s a list of them on a sheet,” Rayner said, “and I said a Ferrari, because I can go quick, but run out of fuel pretty quickly as well.”

** Rayner was best-on-ground in Essendon Doutta Stars’ under-16 and under-18 grand finals in consecutive weeks. The performances were watched by Penleigh and Essendon Grammar coach Clay Illman and helped win Rayner a sports scholarship for Year 11 and 12.
