Crows star Erin Phillips has revealed that her “soul is smiling” as she begins jogging again after undergoing a knee reconstruction in April.
On Wednesday, Phillips posted a short video to her Instagram account showing her slowly running — a huge milestone in her football comeback.
After tearing her ACL during her best-on-ground performance in the Crows AFLW grand final win on March 31, the team’s co-captain has been on the long road to recovery.
“Guess who started jogging?” she wrote to her more than 60,000 Instagram followers accompanying the video.
“A lot of work to do on technique, but still I was happy about this milestone.
“My soul is smiling. #keepbuilding #nevergiveup.”
She told The Advertiser in July that her rehab had been planned around her playing football again.
“My rehab is all planned to try to play again because honestly … I’m still an athlete, I still need those goals,” she said in July from her second home in Texas, where she works as a basketball coach at WNBA club Dallas Wings in the AFLW off-season.
“So my rehab plan is to come back and play again and whether I get up in time (for the start of the 2020 AFLW season), whether I’m physically able, I don’t know.
“But I will be a part of our team in some way, whether it’s helping coaching or some mentorship. But in terms of playing, I’m going to try.”
The fact that Phillips is now back jogging is a huge step forward in her rehab, which she’s been doing with the help of experts at the Michael Johnson Performance Centre in McKinney, Texas.
Phillips has been attending the centre three days a week and spends anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours in intensive training, which has included cutting edge methods, such as blood flow restriction workouts, which are done under medical supervision and she has exercises she needs to do regularly from home.
It’s been a big month for Phillips who welcomed her third child, son Drew, with wife Tracy, on July 31.
She’s also been thrilling her social followers with vision of her “scoring goals” on the basketball court by kicking the round ball through the hoops.
