The AFL has sounded out another massive name for its grand final entertainment with pop superstar Katy Perry believed to be close to inking a deal.

News Corp is reporting the AFL are closing in on the coup for Perry to join the likes of The Killers, Ed Sheeran, Bryan Adams, Meatloaf, Robbie Williams and KISS as grand final performers.

Perry is no stranger to the MCG, having kicked off the Women’s T20 World Cup Final in 2020 with a stunning performance in front of a crowd of around 80,000 fans, despite not having officially toured Australia since 2014.

The AFL is eager to get some of music’s biggest names to play the grand final and The Herald Sun reported the AFL was in “advanced stages of talks with Perry’s management about a multimillion-dollar deal”.

The AFL were keeping mum about the big day however, reportedly saying: “We will be in a position to make an announcement on this year’s Telstra pre-game entertainment shortly.”

Speaking on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle, Jay Clark, who wrote the report, said it was “a brilliant selection”.

Glenn McFarlane agreed, saying: “She’s a star, this’ll be awesome.”

Scott Gullan joked that former AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan would be fuming that Andrew Dillon landed such a big name in his first attempt.

Clark added that it would be another day grand final, but Gullan said: “Move with the times, we’re all aiming towards Taylor Swift, she loves Melbourne, loves the MCG, Taylor doesn’t want to start at 2 o’clock — she wants to start at 6.

“Let’s get it moving now, it’s an entertainment business, all the big finals are at night — c’mon.”

McFarlane replied: “I’m not sure she (Swift) loves it that much.”

Perry’s been teasing the new song for weeks.

Perry, who gets more than 56 million monthly plays on Spotify, is about to release a new album, and was teasing the music video for her comeback single Woman’s World.

Newly-released footage from the upcoming video shows Perry looking like a glammed-up Rosie the Riveter, dancing on a construction site wearing a stars and stripes bikini top, thigh-high boots and denim cut-offs.

Rapid-fire cuts appear to show Perry using the video to promote products including a non-alcoholic beverage and a sex toy – before the teaser ends on a bizarre note, with a giant steel anvil squashing the star, Looney Tunes style.

Friday’s release of both the song and video comes after a weeks-long campaign from Katy to get people excited about her musical comeback.

Woman’s World is going to be an important release for Perry, who hasn’t released an album since 2020’s underperforming Smile.

However, she has been teasing an album since April, with a source telling The Sun: “Katy has been working on her most personal album ever for much of the past two years.

“She has been doing it on her own terms and it is quite different from anything she has released before.”
