The public has been invited to think of a new name for the Inner City South State Secondary College at Dutton Park, the first new high school to be built in the area in six decades.

The move is unusual, but not unprecedented according to the Department of Education.

But you better get in quick, with submissions on the project website closing on November 17.

“The Inner City South SSC has been a working title for the new school during the planning phase with the formal name to be confirmed following consultation with the community,’’ the project website says.

The challenge to the community comes as parents are invited to meet the foundation principal, former Murrumba Downs College head Kirsten Ferdinands.

There will be a meet the principal event at nearby Dutton Park State School, 112 Annerley Rd, Dutton Park, this Saturday (November 9), from 11am to 1pm. Register here

Ms Ferdinands has served as secretary of the Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association and was principal of Bray Park State High School when it won the 2017 School of the Year Award.

She also was heavily involved in the launch of a new high school at Mango Hill and has three decades of experience as a teacher, principal, deputy principal and administrator.

“Our vision is to create a high-profile, signature state school where high quality education is delivered in a positive and inclusive 21st century learning environment,” she said of ICSSSC.

Plans for new high school taking shape

The Department is also seeking expressions of interest from parents who are thinking of enrolling their students at the new school, which will open with foundation Year 7 students only in term one, 2021, sequentially adding more year levels after that.

Registration does not guarantee entry to the school, which will have a significant percentage of merit entry students. Register here
