Tributes are flowing for the beloved nurse who ‘burned while shielding his family’ after his ex-partner broke into his home and doused him and his new girlfriend in petrol before setting them alight.
Mr Obi received burns to 90 per cent of his body, and police who arrived on scene had to hose Mr Obi down.
It is understood he was in agony from his burns, which were sustained saving his new partner and the three children from the fire.
Police confirmed this morning that Mr Obi had died from his injuries overnight.
In a statement police said Mr Obi, 33, was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital suffering critical burns following the house fire.
They said Ms Mudge’s body was located inside the premises. Official identification of her body is underway, with an autopsy to be conducted shortly.
The man’s new partner, a woman aged 30, who also lives at the house, suffered airway burns and was taken to the same hospital in a serious condition. Three children were also taken to hospital but were unharmed. However police noted they were understandably traumatised.
Jonathan Antonacci has started a GoFundMe page for his dear friend.
“It was supposed to be a day to mark the beginning of a new chapter, having won custody of his children and guardianship of a third,” Mr Antonacci said.
“Somehow and thankfully, his current partner and three children escaped, but unfortunately Stanley himself was very badly burned while shielding his family and was initially in intensive care.
“But sadly did not survive through the night and passed away.
“This harrowing experience, the description of events now being fully reported in the media, for this beautiful young family has prompted me to begin this campaign.
“I think you can appreciate the emotional trauma, and that these funds will be used to assist this family with whatever they need to get them re-established.
“If you can’t donate, please include the surviving members of this young family in your prayers.
“Stanley will be remembered as a very kind compassionate young man. Rest in peace Stanley.”
Friends and co-workers of Mr Obi have also paid tribute, describing him as ‘loving, kind, and cheerful’.
“He is a beautiful man who truly cared about his friends, family, and patients,” a previous co-worker of his said.
“A truly genuine, kind and caring human being who’s smile and vibrant personality lit up the room when he entered.
“Smart and intelligent and had a great future ahead of him who drew people to him with his loveable and vibrant nature.”
According to another friend of Mr Obi’s, he was very well loved in his local community.
“Stanley was very friendly, happy, cheerful, a really genuine guy,” she said.
“He’s one of those guys that you just instantly like and get good, positive vibes from.
“When he got his ex pregnant, he did the right thing and moved out to Toowoomba to be with her and the baby. He simply adored the baby.
“I understand they had another child together but it didn’t work out and his ex did not take it very well.”
Another friend of Stanley Obi’s confirmed that he and his new partner built their new dream home at New Beith in Logan last year, and had only just moved in late October 2021.
“Absolutely heartbreaking, Stan is so lovely,” she said.
“ I hope he pulls through as it would be so heartbreaking for his new partner.”
Mr Obi’s friend confirmed the children were his, and that he had full custody at the time.
