The woman who allegedly broke into a Logan house, poured petrol on her ex-partner Stanley Obi and then lit a fire that engulfed the home, killing herself and critically injuring Mr Obi has been identified as Sarah Mudge.
Police allege Mudge, 31, who died in the Logan house fire on Thursday morning, broke into her ex-partner’s home, went to his bedroom, doused him and his new girlfriend in a flammable substance and set them alight.
Emergency services were called to Bidyan Boulevard in New Beith, Logan, about 2.55am to find the house engulfed in flames.
Police have confirmed the fire is suspicious and may be a domestic violence incident.
Mr Obi is in a critical condition in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with burns to 90 per cent of his body.
A neighbour who came to his aid has told The Courier-Mail Mr Obi knew his burns were so significant he begged neighbours to save him, as he proclaimed he was going to die.
The neighbour said he ran from his bed in a nearby house to assist in evacuating those from inside the inferno.
He said he tried his hardest to get everyone, including Mudge out of the blaze, however the fire was too strong.
“I tried to get everyone out of there through the side of the house, and then someone said there’s a lady in there so I tried to go back in but it was too significantly burnt already, I couldn’t get in,” the man said.
The neighbour, who is a health professional, told The Courier-Mail he called the ambulance and tried his hardest to help Mr Obi.
“And he said to me, ‘I’m not going to make it, I’m going to die, I’m going to die, you need to help me. Help me.”
The man said Mr Obi, who is a nurse, knew the significance of his burns.
“He said ‘I’m burnt, 90 per cent of my body is burnt.”
“And he was giving me his hand, reaching out to me to hold it, and I wasn’t going to hold his hand because I know about infection control.
“It’s awful. I couldn’t do anything really to be honest, I had to try keep everyone calm. That’s all I could do.”
Neighbours said Mr Obi has lived at the house for about six months.
The woman who lived at the house was still receiving hospital treatment and detectives planned to speak with her soon.
Superintendent Mark White said there was no evidence a molotov cocktail was thrown.
“We believe the person who does not reside at that residence somehow gained entry and then once in there was able to throw petrol around,” he said.
He said police did not believe was anyone else involved.
He said the “structural stability of the crime scene was proving very difficult”.
Police who arrived on scene had to hose Mr Obi down. It is understood he is in a great deal of pain and may not survive.
They have confirmed Mr Obi and the deceased 31-year-old woman were ex-partners.
The man’s new partner, a woman aged 30, who also lives at the house, suffered airway burns and was taken to the same hospital in a serious condition.
She is still receiving treatment in hospital and detectives plan to speak with her soon.
A friend of Mr Obi confirmed that he and his new partner built their new dream home at New Beith last year, and had only just moved in late October 2021.
“Absolutely heartbreaking, Stan is so lovely,” she said.
“ I hope he pulls through as it would be so heartbreaking for his new partner.”

He also wrote he is proudly African.
Mr Obi is an avid football fan and supports Arsenal.
