LIGHTS, CAMERA AND ACTION FOR MARSDEN SHS PROPS
This season is another milestone moment for women’s rugby league, being the first season girls’ rugby league has been included in the Titans Cup.
Keebra Park SHS and Marsden SHS, both powerhouses in boys rugby league, have also seen an explosion in female participation within its rugby league academy.
“The community confidence in our school has grown over the last few years,’’ Keebra Park SHS principal Adam Brandis said.
“This has led to an influx in enrolments for all of our Academy and Excellence programs, none more so than our Girls Sports Academy,” Brandis said.
“In 2019 we had a group of girls that won state titles in three different sports. Not many schools would have achieved that. They have already been successful in winning their first Rugby 7s competition this year.
“With success breeds more confidence in the school, and more parents wanting to send their children.
“We have looked at the academic pathways for our students in our Girls Sports Academy to ensure they are academically thriving as well.
“We want our students to be just as successful in the classroom as they are in the sporting field.
“We are looking at pathways in the Law, Health and Exercise science fields with our girls.”
Two students from the Keebra Park SHS program were Sunny Gerrard and Faith Tutauha, both year 11 students.
Gerrard started playing league aged six years and loves the Keebra Park SHS program. “I like the close culture the sport encourages and how it enables you to meet so many new friends. The program at Keebra has helped with this a lot.’’
Off the field Gerrard said the academy had helped develop her as a person.
“I especially enjoy the opportunities the program brings for girls and development within the sport and how it paves multiple pathways for young athletes like myself,’’ the Brisbane Broncos supporter said.
Tutauha, a big fan of Broncos’ women players Jessica Elliston and Millie Boyle, said Academy members feed off each other’s knowledge.
“The Keebra Park Girls Sport Academy Program has helped me develop physically and emotionally within my chosen sports,’’ Tutauha said.
“I especially love that the Keebra Park Girls Sport Academy Program as it leads to multiple pathways for the young developing athletes,’’ she added.
Tomorrow we preview Marsden SHS’s open girls ahead of the grand final.
