TAVERNERS, LEW COOPER CUP

Sandgate-Redcliffe defeated University

Steven Hogan (Gators)

Hogan of course was the player of the day in Sandgate Redcliffe’s win over University after his out of the box 147 not out (98 balls). The diminutive right handed batsman hit more sixes (10) than he did fours (nine) during his onslaught on Trevor Hohns Oval.

Gurvir Singh Sidhu (Sandgate-Redcliffe)

All eyes were trained on Hogan for his batting, but while everyone was consuming his innings Sidhu snuck through to claim 5-40 and ensure Hogan’s good work with the bat was not wasted. Significantly Sidhu dismissed Uni’s danger man Blake Armstrong.

Special mentions: Ashton Clark (University). It would have been intimidating bowling to Hogan on Sunday, but Clark stuck to his task admirably in his 10 overs spell for 2-35.

Blake Armstrong (University). University’s left handed spearhead did his best to match Hogan’s brutal batting by racing to 73 from 54 balls.

Steve Hogan’s brother Adam, an off spin bowler, also chipped in with two wickets for Sandgate Redcliffe while Lakshdeep Singh took 2-28, also for the Gators.

Valley defeated South Brisbane

Daniel Desmet and co (Valley)

A South Brisbane revival was underway against a probing Valley attack when Churchie all-rounder Desmet entered the fray.

Valley always had a grip on the innings courtesy of Will Easter (1-14), Harry Klatt and Samuel Drinnen (1-10), but Desmet’s spell consolidated his team’s position. Late in the piece Harry Morton (three wickets) also cashed in, including dismissing the dangerous Thaman.

Dushyant Thaman (South Brisbane)

The left arm orthodox spin ace continued to build his batting portfolio, this time making an innings high 66 out of 147. His beautifully paced knock came from 90 balls as he tried to consolidate the innings, while also pushing on. As a result nine fours and a six came from his bat.

Gold Coast defeated Ipswich

Jaxson Davies (Gold Coast)

That man Davies continued his summer of dreams with a whirlwind century. Opening the innings, the TSS First XI player blazed to 108 not out from just 89 balls. He has become one of the top three most exciting new faces of 2024 across either school or Taverner’s cricket.

Special mention: Daniel Craig (Ipswich) for his thrilling 70 not out (83 balls) which hustled along the Ipswich innings and gave the Hornets a chance.

Sunshine Coast defeated Redlands

Malakai Pearce and Oscar Cawse (Sunshine Coast)

Pearce put a down payment on Team of the Season selection with another fabulous batting and bowling performance, while Maroochydore junior Cawse caused the Tigers much grief at Wood/Peter Burge Oval.

Captain and leg spinner Pearce zoomed to the top of the wicket taking list (21) when he bowled 9.5-2-19-3, while left arm orthodox spinner Cawse pinned his rivals with a spell of 10-1-18-3. With the bat Pearce top scored with 48, adding to his season average which now sits at almost 24.

Special mentions: Joe Parsons (Redlands) for his 2-28 and Ayaan Khan (Redlands, 1-24) who kept a lid on the Scorchers top order.

Northern Suburbs defeated Wynnum-Manly

Harry DeSouza (Norths)

The Terrace all-rounder has regularly received player of the round mentions this season, and his name was up in lights again after another stellar performance. His 124 not out (158 balls) occupied all 50 overs of Norths innings, setting up his team’s win. His performance lifted his average above 50.

Theo Tsingo (Norths)

A genuine fast bowler, the St Patrick’s College student ripped in to take 5-36 after dangerous Wynnum players Joshua Cranston (48) and Hayden Hamilton (81) had added 97 for the second wicket. Wynnum had a launching pad to victory when they were 3-181 chasing 261, but like good fast bowlers Tsingo was able to blast through and middle and lower order.

Hayden Hamilton (Wynnum Manly)

The competition’s leading batsman, Hamilton missed a ton this week but he still produced a headline grabbing performance. One of the discovery players of the season, Hamilton (81) worked the ball around beautifully during his 106 ball innings.

Wests defeated Toombul

Spencer Green (Toombul)

He was the chatter of the GPS First XI competition earlier in the year, and yesterday’s performance in a losing effort again enhanced Spencer Green’s reputation as the leg spinner claimed 5-27.

Liam McGrath and Luke Mayer (both Wests)

Toombul were in a good position at 2-112 chasing 227, but both McGrath and Mayer played huge roles in pegging back the Toombul innings. The pair’s 25-50 over bowling was tremendous as McGrath got through his 10 overs to take 3-31, while Mayer snared 2-36.

Special mentions: Gitarith Gupta (Wests)

In a match where bowlers had it over the batsmen, Gupta’s brisk 59 gave his side the wriggle room it needed to post a winning total.

BRISBANE METROPOLITAN CUP, Under 16 club challenge

Brisbane Super Kings 7-146 defeated Bulimba 146

Aarav Thool (BSK) produced a man of the match performance, and Bulimba’s Ollie White was not far behind him.

Firstly he put the icing on the cake when he snared 3-13 from seven overs to complement the outstanding team bowling performance by his side. Thool was also involved in a run out.

Then, with Bulimba closing in on victory, he anchored the lower order with a defiant 12 not out (35 balls).

Thool’s performance with the ball came despite White’s gallant 58 from 158 balls for Bulimba which held the attack at arm’s length until Sahibjot Gill got through his defences. It was an outstanding contribution by White who watched wickets fall around him.

Then, with the ball White claimed two top order batsmen (2-11, five overs), while Harvey Anderson’s late spurt with the ball added to the tension.

BKS captain Agampartap Singh Ghuman had fired his team away to a quick start (33, 28 balls) before the Bulimba bowlers rallied to almost snatch victory.

TLKCC U16 Boys 7-292 defeated Carina Eagles 144

Alister Bauer (TLKCC) must have been seeing the ball like a watermelon when he peeled off a thrilling 107 from 110 balls. He found a willing partner in William Miles (68, 47 balls) who also went at the speed of light.

TLKCC did not have a mortgage on good performances. Special mentions to Luke Chettlebuegh (Carina) for his 2-34 from eight overs and also for Chettlebuegh (27), and Lincoln Andrews (41, 47 balls) for his late rally for the Eagles.

Key to dismissing Carina were the top end bowling efforts of Noah Brown (9-3-26-3), Henry Edmonds (1-17) and Dylan Formosa (3-16).

University 278 defeated U16 Men Ipswich West 128

It was all about the University’s Charlie Conway (4-22) and the Uni batting performance as a unit in this game.

Conway took wickets at the start and at the finish to defend his team’s 278 which no one was going to run down.

When Uni batted, Brisbane Grammar School’s Alistair Langdon led the way with 68 (57 balls).

While the grit of Ipswich pair Joshua Williams (29 not out, 99 balls) and Zachary Hayward (25, 34 balls) needs to be recognised, it was all about the winners, whose team batting helped generate the win.

Souths Juniors 6-161 defeated RCI North 9-157

On a day for bowlers at Henry Ziegenfusz Park, Aidan Graham’s match best 4-22 from 10 overs stood out like a lighthouse on a moonless night. He was rewarded for bowling at the stumps, getting a first over opener out LBW, and then later bowling two middle order batsmen.

He had plenty of support, including from Gurutva Singh (1-11, seven overs) and Kaizen Dissanayake, but Graham was the main man.

Well done to courageous RCI North batsman Sam McKennariey (37) who held up Souths push for 86 balls.

When Souths batted they were under pressure from their rivals and it took Christian Frederiksen (48 not out) and Edward Isoardi (44 not out) to construct a recovery.

Kobe Todman and McKennariey had dismantled the top order, and at 6-88 RCI North had the upper hand until Frederiksen and Isoardi came together.

Ipswich East 6-252 defeated Logan Legion 91

Isaac Krause (Ipswich East) scored a magnificent century to bat his side to the highest of ground, then claimed 3-9 in a man of the round performance.

An outstanding track and field athlete and First XI cricketer from St Peters Lutheran College, Krause was special with the bat during his 138 ball innings. He was a class above.

But challenging even Krause was Logan’s Daniel Clitheroe who was magnificent during his seven over effort (3-25).

Then after Rylan McDonald had impacted the match with three top order wickets, Ipswich East Jerrick Gabriel Justin Edward Raj chimed in with 3-28 from 10 overs.

Special mention to Ipswich Easts’ Max Stuart (62, 83 balls).

Sandgate-Redcliffe 5-118 defeated RCI South 116

A lovely little bowling performance by Braxton Tuza, Jack Gold, Thomas Cook, Max Hillard, Preston Lovell, Peeter Sheppard, Cooper Stahmer and Cooper Dalmazzo combined to put the Gators into the box seat.

However, RCI South bowlers Declan Hansel (1-25), McGuckin (1-16) and captain Rory Farrell (2-24) hit back hard and it took Sandgate pair Peeter Sheppard (25) and Henry Moore (35 not out) to get their side home.

Special mention to RCI South pair Hamish Neil (22) and Darcy McGuckin (21), and also to Logan’s Shaan Modgil (25).

Valley District 312 defeated Holland Park/Souths 9-261

Valley’s top three Lachlan Szumowski (61), Declan Lambert (85) and skipper Oliver Hayes (66) gave their side a foundation that nothing could disturb which generated victory for their side.

Thanks to their efforts Valley was 1-170 and a launching pad had been established.

Holland Park’s Reggie Daniel (2-44) had a tough time of it, but tried hard, as did Vivaan Ingle (3-37) and Prasaan Meena (2-48).

After Ferguson’s six over burst at the start of the innings, Valley’s Oliver Harris (2-36) and Nissanpal Singh Saroya’s (3-45) claimed five wickets between them.

Special mention to Holland Park/Souths batsmen Varish Shah (49, 38 balls) and Thomas Edlinger (38).

Wilston Norths/Northern Suburbs 5-286 defeated Toombul Bulls 129

Wilston Norths openers Jackson McDonald (96) and Banjo Jenkins (81) added 177 to ensure victory for their side, and then George Keyser became a five wicket hero at Pettigrew Oval.

McDonald and Jenkins were in fine form despite the best efforts of Bulls’ bowlers Samuel Tallon, Cooper Wyllie and Shubh Sandhu.

Austin Tsingos, a fine batsman and bowler from St Patrick’s College, then pushed on with 42 for the winners.

Having tried so hard with the ball, Toombul skipper Wyllie and Sandhu then scored 30 and 25 respectively.

Then Keyser surged through the Toombul batting, bowling 9.3-3-17-5.

Wynnum Manly 209 defeated Wests 98

Finn Haller was man of the match by the width of Wayne Broad Oval after his staggering day in the field. While he claimed 5-15, he also snared three catches. He bowled three batsmen, earning rewards for bowling straight as the Sea Eagles moved toward victory.

Wynnum’s batsmen contributed all the way down the order, with Methuka Wickrama (33) the top scoring player.

Special mention to Wests’ pair Myles Howlett (21) and Oliver Hottot (24), while captain Hottot also took 2-18.

Bulls Masters two day, Players of the Round

Bryce Street and Max Clayton (University)

Street amassed a mountainous 145 from 248 balls, a batting anchor which ultimately allowed Max Clayton to rip and tear his way to 101 not out (98 balls) as Uni beat Redlands on the first innings.

Ethan Ramsbotham (Ipswich)

Ramsbotham batted for more than three hours for his 49 (147), ensuring there was no slip up in the Hornets’ chase of Sandgate-Redcliffe’s target.

Kane Hurley (Gold Coast)

Hurley’s 15 over effort claimed 5-21 and prevented Souths from wriggling to safety after the Dolphins had been left vulnerable making just 191.

Tom Engelbrecht (Sunshine Coast)

The Scorchers were in trouble at 6-139 chasing Norths’ 222, but Engelbrecht turned the match around with a withering counter attack (72, 95 balls). By the time he was dismissed, Sunny Coast was safe.

Jack Beath (Valley)

Valley entered uncertain waters at 4-144 chasing Wynnum’s 259, but Jack Beath (69, 92 balls) got stuck in before finding a willing partner in Patrick Cotter whose free flowing 41 moved the match along. Valley finished with first innings points.

Amritpal Grewal (Toombul)

Grewall was the anchor with his stubborn 100 as Toombul produced a batting performance of substance to reel in Wests’ 360. Grewall was not alone, with his opening partner Tobias Snell (71, 137) equally defiant. As usual that man Preston White then delivered some fireworks during his 87 (117 balls).

Katherine Raymont Shield, Players of the Round

Ava Lee (Gold Coast)

English off spin bowler Lee claimed an extraordinary 5-10 from just four overs to ensure her side an early afternoon at the beach against Valley.

Abbey Harvey (University)

Harvey was another bowling hero in a low scoring round, rushing through her overs to claim 4-12 and tilt the match her team’s way against Sandgate Redcliffe.

Kalea Moore (Sunshine Coast)

The Scorchers’ Moore produced the innings of the round with a brilliant run-a-ball 59 that helped create a victory platform for her side against Wynnum Manly. The Sea Eagles’ Samantha Smithers then scored a gallant 36 not out in a collapsing innings.

Allan Pettigrew Shield

Rhys Johnston (Ipswich)

Toowoomba Grammar School student Rhys Johnston backed up his century a week earlier in the Taverners competition to make 89 (13 fours) for Ipswich’s second grade side last Saturday.

Flynn Thomasson (Norths)

The highly skilled Thomasson had a day out with his medium pace bowler when he claimed 6-47 and 2-38 during a thrilling encounter against the Sunshine Coast. Thomasson also top scored in the first innings with 59.

Chris Lloyd (Wynnum Manly)

Lloyd was the man of the moment with a rousing 5-22 from 13.4 overs that unbuckled the Valley innings.

Lachlan Mark (Toombul)

Mark batted almost all day for his defiant 91 (228 balls), sharing an opening partnership with Nick Laffey (71) that pushed their side to first innings points against Wests.

Norm McMahon Shield

Angus White (University)

White backed up his first innings 95 with an aggressive 68 not out during Uni’s success clash against Toombul.

Andrew Henderson (Wests)

In a match when wickets fell like ten pins, Henderson 5-27 following on his first innings haul sped the game up even further. He captured 11 wickets in a match which had more twists and turns than a Rocky Mountain highway.
