Queensland sporting super school Marsden SHS attracts rookies

Is this Queensland’s new sporting super school? An influx of rookies from around the state have flocked for its basketball, football and rugby league programs - including two NRL junior talents.

Sporting Queensland super school Marsden SHS has received an influx of promising rookies from around the state for its basketball, football and rugby league programs - including juniors from the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans programs.

Marsden SHS has a proud history of producing sporting champions and role models across a range of sports.

Rugby league great Cameron Smith, BMX Olympian-in-waiting Logan Martin, Firebirds premiership winner Hulita Veve (nee Haukinima), dual international Israel Folau and junior Australian athletic champion Lyvante Su’emai, Brisbane Broncos rookie Tesi Niu and Super Rugby W excitement machine Destiny Brill are just some notible Marsden SHS alumni.

But 2021 will see the next generation of promising sporting rookies ushered in from around Queensland.

“Elite student athletes and their families are choosing to come to Marsden SHS for their high expectations in academic performance, future pathways and elite coaching across the three sport disciplines of rugby league, basketball and football,’’ said executive principal Andrew Peach.

“We are a school of high standards and high expectations, and our student athletes lead the way with their dedication to learning and leading by example in the classroom and through their chosen sport.’’

Peach, whose school was named Government School of the Year in 2020, said the school had grown to over 3150 students and his staff were “the vest best role models with a range of experiences that help prepare the kids for the next step after school’’.

“We’re really excited to see what can be achieved in 2021, and for the strong tradition of our graduates going on to great success after their time with us.’’

Eye-catching newcomers across football, basketball and rugby league include:

FOOTBALL

ALEEAH DAVERN

A year 12 student, Davern has moved from North Queensland to Brisbane. She is a full time QAS scholarship holder within the under 18 women’s football set up who, in 2019, represented Queensland at the under 17 national championships as a 15-year-old. She was also the Queensland under 15 captain in 2019 and the Far North Queensland under 16 captain.

MORGAN STANTON

A year 11 student, Stanton has also moved from North Queensland. A full-time QAS player, she has been a youth Queensland player and in 2020 was part of the Far North Queensland u16 women’s side that travelled to Brisbane for the club state cup – ‘Yeh The Girls Cup’.

LILY DUNN

A Brisbane girl, Lilly Dunn arrives in year 8 to boast the school’s program. She has been invited to be a full-time QAS player in the under 14 system. Dunn is a past under 12s South Coast school girls representative and state school girls representative.

CHLOE DAVISON

A train on player in 2020 with the under 13 QAS girls side as a 12 year old, Davison was the youngest in the history of the program. Davison was playing in the highest grade boys league as a 12-year-old and has progressed to be a full time player with the under 13 QAS squads. 

MUSTAFA MOHAMMED

A Brisbane Roar under 16’s academy player, Mohammed is in his second season with the Roar. He was an under 15 schoolboys representative for Met East.

ISIAH QUINN

Year 9 student Quinn is a Brisbane Roar under 18’s Academy player - despite being aged just 15.

BASKETBALL

ALLANAH ANTHONY AND DESTINY MINO

Entering Year 11, both players are Queensland representatives who were part of the squad which won the national championships at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. Since then they have been members of Basketball Queensland’s future development program and the state performance program. Mino will also pursue her interest in rugby league at Marsden.

RUGBY LEAGUE

NATHANIEL TANGITAMAITI

Tangitamaiti joins Marsden SHS as a New Zealand rugby league, touch football and oztag representative. Tangitamaiti, who has been contracted to the Brisbane Broncos since he was 15, and has joined his family in Australia who also have had siblings come through the school.

MACAULEY AOAKE

Aoake arrives at Marsden SHS from Newcastle where he represented the Newcastle Knights in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball competitions.  At the schoolboy level, Macauley has represented NSW country in both rugby league and touch football.

DOMINIQUE SANDOW

Sandow joins Marsden SHS from the rugby league sporting mecca of Cherbourg where he was an extremely talented athlete in the Wide Bay region. Sandow has joined the Gold Coast Titans program and will play for Souths Logan Magpies in the Cyril Connell competition.
