Queensland sporting dad 500 games not out at local softball club

A Queensland sporting dad is 500 games not out for the Red Sox softball club.

Queensland sporting dad Chris Goffer is 500 games not out for the Red Sox Softball Club after celebrating the milestone by playing alongside his five sons.

Goffer, 53, started playing with Red Sox as an 18-year-old and according to wife Fiona, “he has never looked back’’.

But does he have 600 games in him?

“I was only chatting to my son the other day. That it would take until I turn 60 before I got to 600,’’ he smiled.“It (500 games) has taken me 29 years.

“We only play 15-17 games a season and that is why it took so long,’’ Goffer explained.

Making the milestone match more memorable was that his five boys - all elite softball players - were able to join him playing in the game.

Shaun, who represents the Australian Steelers, Brandon, Shannon, Ethan and Ashlee played, with two of the boys flying in from Mt Isa for the occasion.

And wife Fiona also took part - she was the official match day statistician. “It was fantastic,’’ Fiona said.

“We knew it was coming up and Chris’ goal was to play with all of his kids.

“Ash and Shaun came down from Mt Isa to play.

“He is the most capped player out of women and men at Red Sox. He has been at Sox for over 30 years, I have been there for 42 years,’’ she said.

The pair, who grew up together in the same street at Windsor, said Red Sox was a huge part of their life.

“We even timed our wedding so it did not interfere with our softball,’’ Fiona said.

“Softball is a big part of our life. Asked what he loves most about the club, Chris said: “Mostly I have made a lot of good friends over the years.’’
