Jacob Nicholson (Aspley): The big bloke went off injured, but before his departure he was influencing the match with his hard work.

Lachlan Morrissey (Surfers Paradise): It was a case of all hands on deck to deflect a gritty Mt Gravatt from hitting the winners post and leading the way for Surfers was half back Morrissey.

Jack Gersekowski (Sherwood): A tall, he again read the play well and intercepted possession while providing a long kick.

Jeremy Crooks (Aspley): Crooks showed his team the way to the winners post with his enterprising play from the wing.

Cooper Parkes (Broadbeach): It was the Cooper show for the Cats, with Cooper Parkes, Cooper Gwynne and Will Cooper all playing strongly. Parkes and Gwynne were absolutely outstanding leading their young brigade, while Cooper was strong at the contest and in the air.

Jack Kalan (Mt Gravatt): Kalen was at times ahead of the game, the way he read the play from half back flank against very strong opposition.

Hunter James (Roos): He never lacks effort and again he had some big tank runs and controlled the backline well.

Kooper Bambeck (Noosa): A small forward, Bambeck pushed hard all day, in the air and getting hard possessionl.

Aston Wilson (Wilston Grange): Wilson was strong down back for the Gorillas.

Hugh Munro (PBC): Palm Beach Currumbin could see victory, but not snare it and one of their best was Munro who pushed hard all game.

He said his group absorbed pressure from Labrador and played solid footy, quarter to quarter.

“We really capitalised on our opportunities up forward and our structures around the stoppages. That set us up nicely.’’

Best players: Luke Burr, midfielder Ryan King, tall Sam Catlow-Elliott, Ralph Geesu and midfield man Harry Sala.

Labrador coach Rob Yoannidis said his team’s tackling was much better in the second half, but he wants to start winning more stoppages.

He liked “when we spread and move the footy quickly inside the forward 50’’ and was able to capitalise on opportunities created.

His best were Mason Fields, Cody Davis, Leo Johnston, Jimmy Bell and Seb Stevens.

QAFL Coaches and captains have revealed who they think will make the grand final

Aspley Hornets had a close quarter slog with Palm Beach Currumbin before enjoying a hard earned win.

“I was really happy and excited for the group to fight till the end and get a win,’’ said coach Brett Atkins.

But he wanted to see plenty of work go into polishing the squad’s structures and working on the processes.

Best were Jacob Nicholson in the ruck while Jeremy Crooks put in on the wing. “Benjamin “Dempsey also won lots of one on ones while Bryce Slattery was exciting in the forward line and gave us many options,’’ he said.

Palm Beach Currumbin coach Glen Clark said there were promising signs the way the side controlled the game with its run from the backline.

“But our delivery going forward let us down, along with not being able to convert on the scoreboard. That hurt us,’’ he said.

Best for Premiers PBC were Hugh Munro, Tai Hayes, Darcy Freeman and Jack Foggo were the group’s top four players, while Mathew Walkerden and Mitchell Day tried hard.

Roos coach Jason McDonald said his team’s “overall skill execution’’ was not up to scratch in his team’s loss to Broadbeach.

To Maroochy’s credit, they actually won the last quarter despite facing defeat.

Best players included backman Hunter James and forward Ty Gallop who was strong bodied and controlled his position in difficult circumstances. “He is an imposing figure for the opposition,’’ praised coach McDonald.

Max Prendergast, as a small forward, showed superior roving ability around the goals. “He rarely misses when he gets an opportunity,’’ McDonald said. “He is light on his feet and often turns the opposition inside out and uses clean hands to set up his teammates.’’

Hudson Vivian in the midfield worked hard throughout the day against very strong opposition.

Broadbeach’s coach Lewis Chiodo said it was a good early season hit out against a “high quality and dangerous team’’.

“It was a great challenge for our young group,’’ he said.

There were a host of first game players due to injuries, and Chiodo said it was a great learning experience for them.

The Cats’ best were Cooper Parkes and the Gwynne brothers were elite, while Will Cooper, Charlie Corke, Luke Frawley and Joe Kennedy were also on the best afield list.

Noosa coach Jed Costagen said it was a tough day at the office against the Panthers and the squad’s depth was stretched with a few outs. “But the boys had high pressure acts and showed good determination to fight out the game when we were undermanned,’’ he praised.

“Our back six held strong all day.

“But we need to improve playing a full quarter and keeping it consistent from start to finish, along with our forward 50 entries.’’

Best were Jed Bullman, Will Trompf, Kooper Bambeck, Max Cooper and Isaac Gummit.

For the winners, Morningside coach Ross Anderson liked his team’s forward 50 defence but would be looking to work on “our ball movement from the back half’’.

He liked the ball hungry Joey Wilson, Thaylan Ryschka and fit as a fiddle Harry Taylor best from his group.

Surfers Paradise coach Alistair Mitchell was relieved to get out of Vultures territory with a hit and run win because Mt Gravatt “definitely came to play’’.

“We had to grind it out for four quarters,’’ he said.

“We always get a great contest from Mt Gravatt and they made us work hard for the four points.

“Defensively we were great, with Lachie Morrissey outstanding off half back.’’

In addition to Morrissey, Surfers best were Jake Seccombe and Jake Selvey who applied a huge amount of pressure in the stoppages, backed by Luke Snowball and Mike Luxton.

Mitchell said he wanted to work on “our transition and pressure that we apply at stoppages.’’

Mt Gravatt may have had a loss to Surfers Paradise, but coach David Greenaway said his team’s contested possession was good and the Vultures won the hit out and clearances.

But he said work was needed on “transitional play, running both ways’’.

He said Jack Kalan at half back flank had a big day with his reading of the play and intercept marks, while Seth Coombs attacked the footy and was rarely beaten.

“Isaac Solomon was another backman who played his role perfectly,’’ Greenaway praised.

Wilston Grange suffered a defeat to Sherwood, with Gorillas coach Darren Fazldeen saying there was too much fumbling and simple errors. “We need to learn from this and prepare better before games because anyone can beat anyone on their day.’’

Best for Grange were Aston Wilson and Duncan McCabe.

Sherwood’s coach Ben Jaenke-Cain said his team benefitted from generating plenty of scoring opportunities.

“We moved the ball well and created plenty of chances that we capitalised on,’’ he praised.

Magpies best were Jack Gersekowski, Angus Parnell, Ryleigh Utting, Owen Capling, Julian Cruice, Henry Spry, although we have more coming from the Magpies camp todau.
