Surfers coach Mitchell said following the 18 points loss to premiers PBC he needed a few minor adjustments and more match practice which would “help the lads playing structures’’. “It will help them come together. especially considering we had 10 debutants,’’ Mitchell said.
Palm Beach Currumbin coach Glen Clark praised Surfers Paradise for its early assault which saw them “beating us early on in the contest’’.
“They fought hard and did not allow is to run the ball.’’
But Clark loved the competitive nature of his ground, which included four under 17 players.
He said overall his side was a bit stop-start and would work on taking their chances when there were opportunities to bring the ball in and switch it quicker,
Broadbeach’s three goal win over Aspley was highlighted by the Cats young group connecting well as a group, according to coach Lewis Chiodo.
Aspley coach Brett Atkins said despite the narrow loss, he noted his side was able to turn the momentum of the match. “But I would like to keep improving on structure, setups and basic skills,’’ he said.
Morningside coach Ross Anderson said while his team lost to Wilston-Grange, he detected improvement as the match progressed. “A positive was competing better in the second half,’’ he said.
Anderson said he wanted the group to work on contested possession and their work rate.
Gorillas coach Darren Fazldeen said while it was only round 1, and the group needed to understand the way “our new players play’’, he was delighted with the team’s structures. “And we moved the ball around the way we wanted them too,’’ he said.
Maroochydore coach Jason Macdonald said it was a great team effort after a hectic pre-season to beat Labrador.
“We ran the game out well and there was great work from the backline,’’ Macdonald praised.
But he would like to continue to work on a high level of work rate and playing as a team.
Noosa’s 19 point win over the Sharks was highlighted by Noosa’s backline which earned high praise from coach Jed Costagan.
“Today our pressure was really high around the ground and our backline was really solid and created a lot of attack from our defence,’’ Costagan said.
But he would like to work on switches and skills “which throughout the day hurt us’’.
Redland-Victoria Point coach Brian Zutt said his side played some exciting football and got progressively better the more the match progressed.
“I was proud of the entire playing group as they showed maturity and resilience to fight the game out to the very end.
“We certainly had plenty of opportunities in front of goal but inaccurate kicking proved to be the difference.
“With that said, we will be working on our goal kicking this week.’’
In the Sherwood v Vultures clash, the Magpies generated 21 scoring shots to eight before running out winners.
“There were plenty of good things,’’ said Sherwood coach Ben Jaenke-Cain.
“We created some really good opportunities to score and just didn’t convert them.’’
Mt Gravatt coach David Greenaway said his team needed to start with more intensity and focus, and stick to team structures.
But Greenway did like the fight in the side. “We fought hard until the end and ended up winning the final quarter,’’ he said.
