Nudgee College bag second straight victory; TGS make 3-0 comeback over Brisbane side

Nudgee College continued their run of success in round three of the 2023 GPS volleyball season, defeating Gregory Terrace in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Toowoomba Grammar School returned to form in a 3-0 win over Brisbane Grammar School on home soil.

The Nudgee Second XI had just suffered a 2-0 defeat from their Terrace opponents when the Firsts team began warm-up.
Crowds of parents and students from both teams flocked to the stands with Nudgee bringing out their school mascot for extra support.
The game started evenly and the score sat at 5-4 after a quick five minutes of play.
Coaches from both teams urged their players to settle, after several unforced errors prevented either side from making a run-on.
Nudgee College’s Tom Eyles was dominant on the net and earned his team valuable points.
Mixed communication from GT allowed Nudgee to gain an 8-4 lead, forcing a time-out from the away side.
There was no mercy for the visitors, as Nudgee continued surging ahead to 11-7.
No.5 from Gregory Terrace soon threatened to break Nudgee’s lead, with strong hits and clear game smarts.
It was then Nudgee’s Timothee Philppe who impressed spectators with a pipe hit from back court which GT couldn’t return.

In no time, the score was 21-14 and GT called another time-out in the hopes of putting Nudgee off their game.
While it somewhat worked, a string of back and forth serving ended with Nudgee winning the set 25-16.
The second opened with Nudgee scoring the first point.
The score skipped to 8-2, as the home side made it known they wouldn’t be slowing down.
Within minutes, NC were ahead 13-2 with Eyles and Philippe showing off their front court skills.
Terrace struggled to claw back into contention.
The 2022 premiers were far too strong, and the score quickly moved to 17-5.
While Terrace no.5 continued dominating the net in attack, a lack of communication and difficult serve receives prevented the away team from making a comeback.
The set closed with Nudgee winning 25-8.
In the third set, it was Terrace that took the first point.
No.5 once again showing off his swing at the net, delivering a powerful crosscourt from the outside that Nudgee failed to return.
With the score level at 4-4, Nudgee retaliated with strong hits through the middle directed at position six.
The Terrace player took a ball to the face, but quickly regained balance to continue playing.
In minutes, the score had extended to 11-7 much like the first two sets.
Eyles continued his dominating streak of middle and outside hits for Nudgee.
The game became close when Terrace scrambled to get within one point (12-11), before serving errors left them four points behind again.
The visitors called a time-out at 16-12, which stunted Nudgee from gaining anymore lead.
At 22-18, another time-out was called in a last-chance effort for Terrace to level the score.
It was no use however, as Nudgee stormed on to win 25-19, closing the game in 3-0 sets.
The Gregory Terrace players huddled to consolidate while Nudgee’s supporters celebrated another successful step towards the 2023 premiership.

Brisbane Boys’ College v Anglican Church Grammar School
It was a tight game between Churchie and Brisbane Boys’ College, with BBC holding the home ground advantage.
However it was the Churchie boys who dug deep to win in 3-1 sets.
It was no easy feat, but the team did well to pull through.
The side look to continue their streak in a fortnight’s time when they play TGS at home.
They have a bye in round four next week, while BBC travel to TGS.
Brisbane Grammar School v Toowoomba Grammar School
On home soil, Toowoomba Grammar School defeated Brisbane Grammar School with ease in straight sets.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-15 and 25-16.
It was a redemption game for the Toowoomba side, who suffered a loss last week against Brisbane State High School.
TGS play at home next week against BBC, while BGS enjoy a bye.
