Round two of the 2023 GPS volleyball season did not disappoint with Nudgee College continuing their reign as 2022 premiers over Ipswich Grammar School.

Meanwhile, BSHS School put an early stopper on TGS winning streak.

Here is how it went down as the www.couriermail.com and Quest News continue their weekly coverage of the GPS volleyball season.

With a home court advantage, the Nudgee 2nds took to court in high spirits and quickly gained a lead over their visiting rivals.

Strong serves from no.86 (Ned Clarke) and no.577 (Chris Hernik) put a damper on IGS hopes of clawing back in front.

NC were dominant from the start, with chemistry between players securing a win in the first set.

The second set began in similar fashion, with NC front court applying pressure to the Ipswich attacking hitters.

A few missed opportunities to seal the deal threatened Nudgee’s lead, but the side quickly found their feet and closed the second set 25-16.

The Nudgee 2nds coach said his team stuck to their game plan throughout the match.

“They served really well, they passed really well and they were strong in the communication with each other and on the bench,” he said.

Crowds of family, friends and students gathered to watch the 1sts battle it out at midday.

It was a rematch of 2022 season’s 1st v 8th positions and Nudgee fans were eager to see the game pan out.

Before the game began, no.11 (Rylan Carlisle) needed last minute first aid for a back injury, but took to court in the starting line-up.

The first set began with a shock as IGS aced Nudgee on their first serve.

Nudgee passing line adjusted their defence and turned possession after three quick points.

No.7 Emmanuel Taviri served well, while Carlisle played the role of calming force in front court attack and defence.

In no time, Nudgee were 10-5 ahead and forced a time-out from Ipswich’s bench.

The tactical move made no difference to Nudgee’s ruthless play, as the score climbed to 17-7.

In the blink of an eye, Nudgee closed the first set 25-10.

The second set gave Ipswich a chance to level the playing field with Nudgee.

Instead, the blue and grey side put 11 points on the board before IGS had a chance to serve.

A ball over the sideline from Nudgee’s front court attack gave Ipswich their first point.

The score sat at 13-1, but Nudgee quickly regained possession to be 24-3 ahead after just 15 minutes.

Winning the set 25-3, Nudgee were no doubt determined to close the game in a 3-0 sweep.

It was deja vu as the final set opened with Nudgee taking the first eight points.

A coaches time-out failed to stop Nudgee’s run of strong serves and big blocks from no.3 (Tom Eyles).

Ned Clarke also played a pivotal role, as Carlisle came off court to receive more medical treatment for his back.

After being 18-5 down, Ipswich managed to claw their way back within 10 points.

But it was smart play from the home team that helped them bounce back to be 23-11 up with a chance to serve it out.

An unforced error gave Ipswich their final shot at redemption, before Eyles showed off his impressive serves.

A floating ball to position six was all it took for Nudgee to seal the deal and win 3-0 on home soil.

The straight set loss left IGS packing for a long trip home.

Nudgee now prepare to take on last year’s 4th place Gregory Terrace at home.
