Broncos signed halfback Jye Gray was the most dynamic attacking rugby league player across the Meninga Cup under 18s, the Connell Challenge or Harvey girls under 19s this season.

According to official QRL statistics, the Souths Logan No.7 or No.6 had seven line breaks and assisted team mates with nine line breaks, just ahead of exciting FNQ talent Elekana Suavai who had eight line breaks and six assists.

A Queensland schoolboys merit team selection last year, Gray is an explosive Burleigh Bears junior who now plays with the Broncos-aligned Souths Logan side.

Last season he displayed his versatility playing GPS First XI as a fullback for The Southport School.

The biggest tackler buster in the Meninga Cup under 18 competition has been dynamic Blackhawks winger Tekelu Mene who has broken clear 12 times this season while Jets winger Alton Naiyep had seven line breaks. Mene was also the competition’s leading try scorer.

Gray’s team mate at the Magpies, Coombabah SHS’s long striding fullback Tim Sielaff-Burns, has had four line breaks and assisted team mates on five occasions.

It is a huge pat on the back for the three boys who, from unfashionable teams, produce effort on effort plays coming out of their own end.

Note surprisingly Blackhawks captain Damon Marshall was never far from the action, while Redcliffe edge forward Jacob Taulani was a top 10 entrant for metres gained.

Statistically four of the players of the season have been SC Falcons Connell Challenge captain and No.13 Zac Garton, along with Harvey 19s girls trio Montana Mook (Northern Pride), Nancy Sullivan (Falcons) and Lily Peacock (Cutters). All the girls featured prominently in both attack and defence.

The work ethic of Shaylee Joseph, the Tigers captain, was also evident as she featured on both lists.

The sister of Roosters NRLW player Keilee, Shaylee Joseph was second in the run metres behind teammate Estanoa Faitala and also made lots of tackles.

Big Sam Stephenson (Burleigh) also had a big impact carrying the ball and was ranked No.5 in the competition.

It would not shock anyone to note that Ipswich Jets Connell Challenge middle forward powerhouse David Leota, recently signed by the Canterbury Bulldogs, was third in the run metres in his competition behind Wide Bay pair Thomas Morcom and Ryan Smith.

The top tacklers in Connell were Tweed’s Jacob Morton, Pride’s Marley Helion, along with Bodhi Sharpley, Ryan Smith (Wide Bay) and Jac Finigan (all 88 tackles).

Of course given his pedigree, Lachlan Coburn missed just two tackles for the Jets in the Connell Challenge, while Garton, Jets edge forward Isaac Togia, Blackhawks’ Braith Dowson and Finigan all featured.

In the Meninga Cup, Capas trio Will Lewis, Bailey Cavanough and Carter Wight filled three of the top four highest tackling positions so far this season, while Cutters’s dummy half Xavier Kerrisk got stuck into the defence along with the Cutters backrower Baden Robinson.

In the Harvey 19s, Kimberley Bryant made most tackles ahead of Cutters’ Ataliah Love.
