REPLAY: BRISBANE V TOOWOOMBA 1 (women) - 2-1 win to Brisbane
Tess Henare had the distinction of scoring the first goal of the championship as Brisbane crept past Toowoomba 1 by 2-1 in the championship opener on field 1.
Henare when she capitalised on a rebound from a penalty corner to put Toowoomba 1 ahead in the first quarter - and Brisbane never lost the lead from that point.
Her teammate Aleisha Neumann had drawn a breach when she pushed forward to try and score, and when Madeline Staff’s penalty stroke was saved by Brisbane goalie Emily Witheyman Crump, the rebound landed near Henare who pounced to score.
Brisbane struck back in the second quarter when Talica Canty nailed a field goal conversion.
He scored initially to level the scores, then scored again with her second shot, a new conversion rule being tried during the championship that enabled the scorer of a field goal to attempt a second goal.
Representing Toowoomba 1, Neumann has a big year ahead of her because she has also been selected to be an umpire at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
In the third quarter, Toowoomba defended successive penalty corners from Brisbane, including when Steinhardt deflected a shot from Genevieve Ferguson.
Then in the last quarter a penalty stroke by Ferguson slid past the right hand side of the goal.
Late in the match Neumann drove forward looking to equalise, but the Brisbane defence was up to the task.
In the men’s opening match, Ipswich and Mackey drew 2-all.
REPLAY: Ipswich vs Mackay (Men’s) - 2-2 draw
Mackay’s Noah Gauci opened the scoring and Wagner Ryan made it a 2-nil lead before a field goal and field goal conversion from Ipswich’s Hayden Michel levelled the match after 45 minutes.
WATCH REPLAY: SUNSHINE COAST v TOWNSVILLE (women)
Sunshine Coast claimed its first point of the championship with a 3-2 win over Townsville.
The Coast inched its way ahead in the third quarter, but Townsville’s Janaye Wiliams lit a fuse under the match by converting a penalty corner in the 48th minute to lift her side to 1-all.
Williams, who minutes earlier had her penalty shot deflected by Sunshine Coast defenders, struck the ball sweetly and the noise of it echoing across the ground sent supporters into wild applause.
But Coast goal scorer Kerryl Brown replied soon after, and Sunshine Coast were back in front 2-1.
The Coast’s Tevant Annelyse then threatened with a back handed shot, but Townsville goalkeeper was outstanding Alice Arnold and up to the challenge.
A telling moment came when Majella Barnes scored a field goal to make it 3-1, although Arnold was again superb in preventing her from converting it into a second field goal under the new conversion rules.
Townsville persisted late into the match. A cross from Elizabeth Perrin opened play up, then another penalty shot was defended by Sunshine Coast before Williams scored her second goal to make it 3-2 just as full time was about to be blown.
Earlier, Kerrly Brown opened the scoring for Sunshine Coast in the eve of the halftime break.
Brown absolutely nailed her chance, smashing the ball beyond the defenders and goal with a shot that hammered into the back of the net.
Sunshine Coast then had a second chance when Eva Kersnovske went to the brink of scoring.
At one stage Kersnovske was on the flat of her stomach, outstretched as she tried to divert the ball into the goal, but somehow the goal was saved.
It was an extremely even match, with possession shared across the opening 30 minutes.
The Sunshine Coast had first chance to open the scoring in the opening quarter, but a penalty shot was defended by Townsville.
Early in the second quarter, two penalty stroke attempts by Sunshine Coast went without conversion in the third quarter, once when Townsville defenders hustled Brown, and another time when Brown passed off to Kersnovske without success.
As a cold wind whistled across the Toowoomba Hockey Association, but defenders from both teams worked overtime to snuff out potential scoring opportunities.
WATCH REPLAY: GOLD COAST V TOWNSVILLE (men’s)
In the men’s round 2 match, Gold Coast played Townsville on field 2, with Townsville prevailing 3-nil.
Townsville scored through captain Grant Dilger in the first quarter, but had to wait until the 38th minute to score again when Cody Rintala scored from a field goal, and then converted the field goal under the new rules.
WATCH REPLAY: TWEED v IPSWICH (women): 4-2 WIN FOR IPSWICH
A superlative goal by Jessica Wilkinson helped Ipswich defeat Tweed 4-2 in a free wheeling women’s clash.
Wilkinson’s athletics, weaving run from near halfway to score snapped open the match after it had ebbed and flowed following an early goal by Tweed.
Wilkinson then converted her own field goal and all of a sudden the match went from 1-all to 3-1.
The score is an early contender for goal of the championship.Another Ipswich goal from Carkeet Bridget, who capitalised on a nice deflection, saw Ipswich then rise to a 4-1 advantage in the third quarter before Tweed captain Hannah Raftery fought back hard for her side.
Raftery’s fourth quarter goal, which reduced Ipswich’s lead to 4-2, was a reward for a brave piece of defensive work by team mate Jade Reid who just minutes earlier had saved what appeared to be a certain goal.
The scoreline did justice to the closeness of the match, with Wilkinson’s solo performance the difference.
Tweed Heads opened the scoring in the first quarter when Ella Shultz scored a field goal to elevate her side to a 1-nil advantage.
Ipswich had a half opportunity early when Gabby Nicholls strode forward to take a penalty corner for her side, but the well organised Tweed defence was able to prevent a goal.
WATCH REPLAY: ROCKHAMPTON V FRASER COAST - Rockhampton win 5-3
In the men’s fixture, Rockhampton defeated Fraser Coast 5-3.
For the winners, Kaleb Christensen scored in the 24th and 35th minutes, including a field goal conversion, while Douglas Buckley also scored twice.
For Fraser Coast, Lachlan Woodall scored the first goal of the match, Ryley Stevens and Lachlan McLennan also scored.
WATCH REPLAY: GOLD COAST v GLADSTONE
Gold Coast dismantled Gladstone quarter by quarter to win 8-nil at the Hockey Queensland Championships this afternoon.
The Coast scored in every quarter and were never headed after an early goal by Leigh Thomas.
It was not a demolition of a gutsy opposition, rather a win patiently constructed piece by piece.
After Thomas found the back of the net in the first quarter, Danica Kovacevich then made it two goals for Gold Coast with a second quarter effort.
Carey Tinesha hammered home a converted field goal and Amy Beikoff scored as Coast eased out to 5-nil in the third quarter, while in the final quarter Beikoff scored again.
Gladstone were not far off the pace and their will and desire ensured the Gold Coast had to remain switched on throughout.
They competed hard across the opening three quarters would have been inspired by an outstanding goalie performance from Rachel Groves to prevent Coast from scoring.
But the further the match went, the more they lost their grip on the opposition.
In the men’s fixture on field 2, Toowoomba No.2 dominated in a big win 13-nil over Sunshine Coast.
Kane Bradford opened proceedings for the home side in the fourth minute and went on to score another two goals.
Goals then flowed, including to Elliott Speed, Dylan Pember, Jack Hill, Tom Campbell and Oliver Harding.
WATCH REPLAY: TOOWOOMBA (2) v TOWNSVILLE
A field goal by Townsville’s Alice Phillips helped elevate her side marginally above Toowoomba 2 in Hockey Queensland Championship action today.
With not a struck match between the teams, Madeline Rennie and Alice Phillips found the back of the net in a game which could have gone either way.
Toowoomba almost clinched a draw with less than two minutes remaining after Emily Manhire scored, but she was unable to convert her goal into a second score under new rules being implemented in this competition.
It was a match which deserved a grandstand finish.
Phillips scored in the vital third quarter for Townsville after the game had swayed back and forth.
It was a well deserved victory for Townsville who earlier in the day had a narrow loss.
Both teams had their chances, and the goal keeping efforts of Sarah Bradbury and Kate Acworth (Toowoomba 2) and Alice Arnold (Townsville) should be commended, along with the defensive work around them.
Townsville’s penalty corner expert Janaye Williams then launched a shot at Bradbury, but the ball was deflected well before it got near the goalie.
In the men’s match on field 2, Brisbane had a big win over Townsville by 6-1.
Representative player Joel Rintala scored three times, while Dorg, Carseldine and Prest also scored for Brisbane.
WATCH REPLAY: TOOWOOMBA 1 v FRASER COAST (MEN)
Sensational goal keeping highlighted the finale of a bell ringer of a contest before Elijah Mathewson scored the winner for Toowoomba 1 over Fraser Coast 5-2.
The match was in the balance just two minutes from the end as Toowoomba clung to a 3-2 advantage before Mathewson scored.
In the moments leading up to the winner, Toowoomba goalkeeper Tom Lebsanft had saved a penalty stroke, then from the turnover, up the other end of the field, Fraser Coast’s Ben Redmond remarkably defended a shot by scrambling and reaching his full length.
Both were fantastic performances by the men in goal.
But even Redmond could not halt Mathewson’s shot which came less than two minutes before time was called.
Toowoomba had hit the front just before halftime, with the local crowd roaring as Toowoomba’s Joshua Bidgood cannoned the ball past the keeper to inch his side ahead 3-2.
There was a half chance for Toowoomba to go further ahead, but a cross by Guse went without deflection as sticks probed forward in a desperate bid to knock the ball into the net.
Earlier in the game Fraser Coast struck back when Ryley Stevens scored early, but one goal became two goals for the home side after Wilson Love scored levelled things up 2-all.
WATCH REPLAY: SUNSHINE COAST v TOOWOOMBA 1 (women)
Rain swept across the Toowoomba Hockey Association grounds as Toowoomba 1 outlasted Sunshnie Coast 2-1.
Holly Gilbar scored the winner a long, long way from home as both teams battled to get on top of each other.
After almost two quarters of scoreless play, Toowoomba 1 opened the scoring four minutes before halftime with a well taken shot by Kate Wollstein.
There was little between the teams, with Majella Barnes scoring for Sunshine Coast before a goal by Toowoomba’s
Toowoomba’s Tatrum Stewart had been an early threat to the Sunshine Coast, with her contribution in rebounding her team out from defending causing some hussle in the Coast defence.
Stewart She actually had one shot herself, from long range, which went wide but which highlighted her all round game.
In a high scoring men’s game, Gold Coast rose above their rivals 5-4 in a crowd pleasing thriller.
Mackay’s Ryan Wagner kick-started the goal avalanche in just the fifth minute, followed soon after by Gold Coast’s Bailey Charlesworth.
Goals flowed later into the match with a double to Daniel Pitterdreigh (Gold Coast) while
Callum Fitzpatrick also scored for the coast.
Mackay’s other goal scorer was Noah Gauci.
In the second last women’s game of the night, Brisbane established a 5-nil lead over Toowoomba.
Brisbane’s early goal scorers were Lucy Lanigan, Ashley Spry and Rhyleigh Brown.
In the men’s clash between Brisbane and Ipswich, Brisbane’s Will Prest scored four goals in the first three quarters as Brisbane strode toward victory.
