The GPS First XI season is already hotting up after a sensational round 2 of matches last weekend.

There were five star performances aplenty and selecting our Team of the Week was no easy task.

1. Jack Ryan (Churchie)

I know he is a down the order player, but in the absence of any outstanding opening performances, I am happy to go with Churchie’s Jack Ryan (60) and Ipswich Grammar School’s Cody Dalziel (52) at the top of the order. Ryan’s 60, top score in the match, was the bricks and mortar of Churchie’s successful run chase against Ipswich Grammar.

And he took one of the great GPS catches - diving from first slip at full stretch to snare a chance that was in the direction of third slip. It was a remarkable performance by Ryan who had a great day.

2. Cody Dalziel (IGS)

Dalziel displayed a great temperament and plenty of ability to rally his side after they had slipped behind during the morning session. IGS were 3-66 after 20 overs, but his 94 minute effort to top score helped give the Ipswich boys plenty of substance.

3. Tom Campbell (Terrace)

The Terrace batting ace scored a classy 86 (117 balls) and then proved impossible to get away when he went to the bowling crease. His off-spinners yielded 10-4-22-1. It was a high class performance from a high class cricket.

4. Jack Balkin (Nudgee)

Balkin was back to his best, contributing with bat and ball. He top scored with 62 in Nudgee’s innings, then claimed two early wickets with his brisk off-spin.

5. Will Sheedy (BGS)

The Brisbane Grammar School all-rounder was a top notch contributor to BGS’s effort over BSHS. With the ball he bowled splendidly to the middle order and lower order, taking 2-21 from nine overs with his medium fast. He then batted positively for 38.

6. James Kuzevich (Nudgee)

Making his First XI debut, Kuzevich was fearless in thumping 49 from 49 balls after Nudgee were an uncertain 5-83. He added 88 runs with Jack Balkin, starting slowly but then building his innings.

7. Angus Tolhurst (BGS)

His off-spinning bowling was excellent – 8-1-29-1 – but it was Tolhurst the batsman who earned a place in the Team of the Week. In scoring 40 not out, he kept his nerve across an 82 minute innings when BGS lost their way. He farmed the strike so No. 9 Charles Thomas faced just three balls during their 12 run partnership.

8. Cooper Webster (TGS)

Webster was in the game in the field and at the bowling crease against Nudgee at Ross Oval. A year 10 student, he took one of the great square of the wicket catches off the flashing blade of inform Nudgee opener Kane Neilsen. Bowling off-spin, Webster also claimed 2-27 and was an easy inclusion in our side.

9. Hamish MacDonald (Churchie)

For the second successive week MacDonald shone for Churchie taking the new ball. A leg-spinner, he produced an opening spell of 7-0-17-1, bowling with confidence. He went within a whisker of making our round 1 Team of the Week, and made it in week 2 after also scoring a match turning 34 in 37 balls when every run was gold. Around his bowling seamers Lachlan Cooper and Stuart Hawker (2-33) were very competitive, with Cooper also contributing a direct hit run out.

10. Jem Ryan (TGS)

The big, tall Toowoomba Grammar School fast bowler rocked Nudgee early with bounce, helping TGS have the better of the opening exchanges. With the bat he produced a spirited, near run-a-ball 32.

11. Jayden Draper (Churchie)

He only scored five not out, but he may as well have blasted 35 – such was the importance of his six minute innings. Draper joined Riley Devereaux in a nine run, last over partnership that helped Churchie to beat IGS. If Draper had not scored those runs, would Churchie have won?Well done him, for holding his nerve.

12. Hayden Evetts (Terrace)

Evetts new ball burst bowled Terrace into the box seat and himself into our Team of the Week. The son of respected first grade player Kim Evetts, Evetts finished with 3-18.

The wily off-spinner had the BBC batsman in a pickle with 4-12 from 7.1 overs. His remarkable contribution included two caught and bowls, and a bowled.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

Michael Harper (Terrace)

The wily off-spinner had the BBC batsman in a pickle with 4-12 from 7.1 overs. His remarkable contribution included two caught and bowls, and a bowled.

James Alexander (BBC)

Alexander (4-40) did well early and late – and everywhere in between for Brisbane Boys College against Terrace. He claimed a wicket with the new ball – and then other three – including bowling man of the match Tom Campbell for 86.

Dan Seaton (Nudgee)

You would expect Dan Seaton to be a contender for the side because of his batting, but he also produced a remarkable haul which spun TGS’s tail out - taking 4-23 and almost made the side as the spinner.

Harry Bloomfield (Ipswich Grammar School)

The Ipswich Grammar School all-rounder produced another courageous and highly skilled performance with the ball despite missing out with the bat.

Dylan Crees (Brisbane State High School)

Crees got his team away to the flying start and so well was he batting, it was a surprise to see him dismissed under 50. He scored a classy 42 and will look to build on that performance in the weeks ahead.

Lachlan Holmes (IGS)

Lachlan Holmes and Jack GELDARD were tremendous for IGS in the last ball thriller against Churchie. Holmes was the most economical bowler of the round, with his 10 overs going for just 19 runs. He built pressure with his three maidens which added to a magnificent match. GELDARD again shone with bat (34) and with ball (1-35).

Sam Loch (Terrace)

Loch missed out on the big haul, but was an unsung hero again for Terrace in their defeat of Brisbane Boys College.

Callum Galvin (TGS)

For the second successive week Galvin was a model of consistency with both bat and ball.

He followed his tidy 0-35 (10 overs) with a gallant 37 in almost two hours against Nudgee.
