GPS FIRST XI - PLAYERS TO WATCH
GUN GPS FIRST’S OLD BOYS XI TO HELP THE HEAT, BULLS
1. Kane Neilsen (Nudgee)
Neilsen’s 78 (120 balls) was the cornerstone of Nudgee innings and recovery from 2-69 (25 overs) to make 218. He showed a great temperament not to panic when he lost two partners in quick succession to the new ball, or when the run rate crept along.
2. Brayden Laffan (Terrace)
Laffan produced one of the top innings of the round with a marvellous 70 in difficult batting conditions when Terrace were sent in. On most days, his innings would be worth a 100.
3. Darcy Graham (BBC)
The Brisbane Boys College first drop saw his side home with 81 not out (100 balls) when they confronted a challenging 201 from BSHS. Batting for more than two hours, Graham leapt onto anything slightly off line while defending the good balls.
4. Jack Sonter (BSHS)
The right handed Sonter displayed plenty of class during his impressive knock of 59 (80 balls) for Brisbane State High School. So well was he batting, it was a surprise to see him dismissed after an excellent partnership with John Isoardi (40).
5. Tom Campbell (Terrace)
Campbell produced an accomplished allrounder’s effort in his team’s win over Churchie.
He scored 32 when the going was tough during the morning session, and with the ball ended with 3-32.
6. Toby Weston (Terrace)
Weston added the spit and polish to the Terrace innings with a near run-a-ball 62 that took his side beyond the 200 mark. He showed enterprise, and some innovation to get the Terrace innings rollicking along.
7. Fergus McFadyen (Nudgee)
McFadyen altered the momentum of a runaway TSS innings by capturing both openers who had crashed their side forward to 0-78 after 15 overs.
His 16 also contributed to Nudgee’s batting revival, but those two wickets needed to be taken or else the match would have slipped away.
8. Daniel Statham (TSS)
The Southport School gloveman set lofty standards in the field and his 38 almost got TSS home in a last over thriller against Nudgee College.
9. Zac McDermott (TSS)
McDermott produced a classical new ball spell to rock Nudgee and plunge them onto the back foot. Bowling medium fast, he opened with 4-3-5-2, bowling a beautiful controlled line and length.
10. Javen D’souza (BCC)
D’souza recovered from an early attack by Sonter to claim four wickets. Bowling off-spin, he pitched up and contributed greatly to BSHS’s collapse from 4-175 to all out 201. Earlier Hamish Bowles (1-21, 10 overs) also curtailed the BSHS innings that at one stage looked like it could reach 240.
11. Jack GELDARD (IGS)
Geldard was one of several outstanding Ipswich Grammar School bowlers who curtailed TGS. His 1-18 from 10 overs suffocated the TGS batsman while Lachlan Holmes went within a whisker of making our Team of the Week with his 3-35 from nine overs
12. Cooper Webster (TGS)
Webster was a part of a spirited Toowoomba Grammar School bowling and fielding effort which almost defended 140. He bowled three maidens in taking 2-17 and along with Thisaja Samarawickrama (1-23) and Will Kruger (0-15) he at one stage tipped the match in favour of TGS. It was a fantastic team performance by the TGS bowlers.
SPECIAL MENTIONS
Hamish McDonald (Churchie)
Hamish McDonald was the unlucky omission from the team, bowling 8-2-21-0 and scoring 24 in an hour of batting to try and keep Churchie in the game. McDonald had fantastic support at the bowling crease from Henry Hillier (10-2-23-0) and Joshua Welsh (9-2-36-2).
Carter Coreless (Nudgee)
Coreless’s three wickets were pure gold as the Nudgee College score appeared within sight for The Southport School batsman. After Fergus McFadyen’s double breakthrough, Coreless, Daniel Seaton (0-10, six overs) and Naite Grauf (1-20, seven overs) maintained pressure through either wickets or tight bowling.
Will Kruger (TGS)
Kruger went within a whisker of winning a place in this team for his tight bowling and 18 runs coming in at No.11 – an innings which almost proved the difference. Kruger added 48 with Will Nason (37 not out)
Hayden Evetts (Terrace)
Evetts took 2-17 from seven overs and teamed with Campbell, Harper (1-20, 10 overs) and Loch (1-25, 10 overs) to lasso the Churchie batsman who were chasing 201.
Nick Williams (TSS)
Williams was supreme in the field, helping set the standard for the TSS fielding effort and when he opened, he gave TSS every chance with 54 from 70 balls. He showed great judgement with the batting, choosing carefully which ball to attack and defend.
Sam Bell (BBC)
On the surface a spell of 0-31 from eight overs is ho-hum when you are talking team of the week, but Bell’s leg-spin bowling in tandem with D’souza nipped the BSHS innings in the bud when BSHS were eyeing off 240. But also earned a special mention because he scored 35.
Hats off also for the batting efforts of IGS pair Harry Sheppard (33), Hayden Bloomfield (31) and TGS pair Callum Gavin (33) and Will Nason (37 not out) who did a marvellous job for their team in bowling conditions.
