The St Peters Lutheran College cricket community rallied around its annual Pink Stumps Day event across all senior and junior grade home and away matches against Marist College Ashgrove today.

In the First XI clash, St Peters pulled off a miraculous upset to stun Ashgrove with a 17-run-victory. More on that game shortly.

St Peters cricket co-ordinator Gary Munday said the college took great pride in supporting McGrath Breast Care Nurse funding.

Pink Stumps Day has become a fixture on the St Peter’s AIC cricket calendar.

Pink Stumps Day generates funds for the McGrath Foundation which enables breast care nurses to offer physical, psychological and emotional support to people navigating breast cancer.

The McGrath Foundation was created by former Test great Glenn McGrath, after the death of his wife Jane. McGrath sent a special thank you video to the St Peters Lutheran College cricket community ahead of today’s matches.

In the match which was played on Mayer Oval in Indooroopilly, a five-wicket haul by Ashgrove’s Will Easter catapulted the boys from Frasers road into the drivers seat.

That didn’t last long before the Saints surged back into the contest, the home side posting just 95 with the bat and defending it to have visitors Ashgrove all out for 78.

Samuel Lewis (16, 12 balls) and Frank Piper (21, 32 balls) saw Ashgrove off to a flyer in the chase, Ashgrove a quarter of the way to the total before losing their first wicket.

But in came Ashish Neredumilli, striking for the first of the day. Then the second. Then the third. All three wickets coming for the loss of no runs.

One second Ashgrove were 0-24 and the next, after right arm swing bowler Neredumilli arrived to the party, 3-24.

Piper and Joey Laner stabilised the innings but before long Hugo Kelly made another telling breakthrough to see the visitors four wickets down for just 44.

Neredumilli swooped for his fourth and final wicket next, dismissing Ashgrove’s Laner. The game was in the balance with Ashgrove 5-58 requiring 38 runs with time not an issue.

Lars Sagorski pounced to claim the scalp of Ashgrove’s Oliver Hayes then finisher Sritam Sai Vytla joined the party to take four consecutive wickets and down his rivals.

Vytla bowled just 15 balls for his four wickets. What a spell.

He finished with figures of 2.3-0-10-4 while the bloke who started it all, Neredumilli, finished with damaging figures of 6-2-23-4.

Earlier Will Easter, feeding off the pressure created by teammates Joey Laner, Archie Murray, Louis Morris and Saw Lewis, struck first to claim the wicket of St Peters opener Liam Bahemia (6).

Then with Morris, Easter cleaned up the Saints tail.

Easter, who is playing his first season of First XI for the school, finished with figures of 6.3-0-20-5 as Ashgrove had St Peters dealt with for just 95 runs.

ROUND 2

Archie Murray and Joey Laner were on the money with the new ball but Bahemia, James Nelson (6) and Noah Johnson (6) showed fight.

After showing great determination to whether the early storm and take the shine off the new ball, the Saints batting order began to collapse in response to Laner’s beautiful swing bowling, which claimed the first of the day when he clean bowled Nelson.

Easter pounced shortly after and before long he had five wickets next to his name.

Once again Morris was impossible to put away, the slow-bowling all-rounder claiming two wickets while going for .5 an over in his eight overs.

His brilliance on one end allowed for Easter to excel on the other, while the economical Lewis also shone with figures of 10-3-15-1.

Saints No. 4 batter Lars Sagorski (23, 90 balls) showed determination and plundered an innings high score but with Ashgrove’s bowling aces on song and the outfield wet and slow, runs proved hard to come by for the home side.

With the ball, the Saints worked their magic to pull off the upset of the season and throw a spanner into the premiership race.

In Ipswich, Villanova surged to their second consecutive win with a seven-wicket-victory over St Edmund’s College.

Eddie’s batted first but finished with just 68 after Ned Godwin, who claimed four wickets, broke a determined partnership between Max Halls and Patrick Albion.

Halls and Albion rallied hard after the loss of an early wicket but once Godwin dismissed both of them, Eddie’s were thrown further onto the back foot.

Godwin collected two more poles, with help of Zac Joyce (two wickets) Lachlan Whaites (one wicket), Joey Watson (one wicket) and Henrik Frederiksen (one wicket) who all worked to create a suffocating atmosphere around the Eddie’s batters.

Rylan McDonald (12*) scored an innings high for Eddie’s but it was all about Godwin and his crew who were able to claim 10 wickets in 35 overs at a run rate of just 1.94.

With the bat, Finn Thallon (25*, 14 balls) and Mitchell Francis (24*, 28 balls) were quick to chase down 69 for victory and make it two in a row for Villanova.

Rylan McDonald (two wickets) and Harry Read (one wicket) bowled brilliantly early on for Eddie’s but after 12 overs Villanova, courtesy of a 50-run-partnership between Fallon and Francis, had the game wrapped up.

In the Laurie’s versus Paddies’ clash, three old timers contributed to St Laurence’s finding its batting mojo.

Xavier Santos (34) Aiden Mohr (35, 52 balls) and Thomas Stenhouse (57) hit the mark as St Laurence’s total ballooned to 212.

Stenhouse unleashed with seven fours during his blistering 53 ball innings, and with Lachlan Wigan (11 not out) and Evan Chamberlin (12) slapping runs at the end, Laurie’s had a 200-plus run total to defend.

Adam Hogan took a season best four wickets on Saturday.

Young gun Adam Hogan (four wickets), Theo Tsingos (two wickets), Cooper Williams (two wickets), Matthew Pereira and Austin Tsingos (one wicket each) did the heavy lifting with the ball but would be disappointed with the team’s 34 extras which gave St Laurence’s extra cushion.

In defence of its total, St Laurence’s landed an early blow when right arm medium pace bowler Liam York claimed the early scalp of Lewis Bullock.

After that breakthrough which came on the back of immense pressure, Evan Chamberlin and Nate Bainbrigge took two wickets apiece to help Lachlan Wigan, Mohr, Santos and Thomas Vaseo eliminate their rivals for 115.

Chamberlin and Wigan were excellent, as was Vaseo who picked up the key wicket of Theo Tsingos (23).

Austin Tsingos (19), Mitchell Hartshorn (18) scored well for St Patrick’s but it wasn’t enough, St Laurence’s bringing up its first win of the season by 97 runs.

At Davine Oval in Wynnum, Iona beat Padua by 112 runs to remain undefeated and sit atop the First XI table one month into the season.

Iona batted brilliantly on its home turf, and had an early deposit on victory after opener Joshua Ritchie showed his class with a knock off 66 (97 balls).

Ritchie belted three sixes and four fours and built partnerships with Liam Johns (10, 14 balls) and Harley Malpass (20, 39 balls) before being bowled by Padua’s left arm paceman Cameron Plackett.

But once Ritchie departed the middle, another brilliant batter entered in the form of Toby Collins.

Collins scored 61, belting six fours and a six in a brilliant partnership with Clancy Muniandy whose run-a-ball forty pushed Iona’s total well into the 200s.

Cameron Plackett (10-1-47-3), Will Webster (7-1-35-1), William Tozer (10-1-56-2), William Johnson (4-0-18-1), Harry Thornton (2-0-22-1) and Ryan Out (6-0-16-1) shared the wickets for Padua.

With the ball, Callum McKeon (three wickets) rewarded high-scoring trio Ritchie, Collins and Muniandy with a ripping bowling effort which tore through the Padua middle order.

Before this, all-rounder Malpass and Lachlan McClure collected each of Padua’s openers.

Standing tall for Padua was none other than Tozer, the all-rounder who continues to deliver for Padua in both cricket and rugby.

Tozer tonked 69 not out and made the most of the small boundaries, hitting seven fours and one six for a match-high score.

Eventually, Iona’s bowlers came together to dismiss Tozer’s batting partners and have victory secured with 12 overs left in the innings.
