AIC First XI: Iona run machine marches on; Laurie’s recovery

Will Tozer (Padua) and Will Nickelson (Ashgrove) were batting heroes, and Mackenzie Douglas (St Laurence’s) a bowling hero as the AIC First XI competition went up a gear today.

Will Tozer (Padua), Will Nickelson (Ashgrove), Noah James (St Patrick’s) were batting heroes, and Mackenzie Douglas (St Laurence’s) a bowling hero as the AIC First XI competition went up a gear today.

Nickelson went agonisingly close to a century (96 not out) in his team’s successful run chase against St Peters, while allrounder Tozer produced runs and wickets as Padua upset Iona College despite another batting master class from Iona’s Harley Malpass.

And Mackenzie, the St Laurence’s captain, produced a four wicket effort despite his team losing.

ROUND 3 TEAM OF THE WEEK; TRIBUTE TO CENTURY MAKERS

With three wickets in a winning side and an unbeaten 76 (83 balls), Tozer was arguably the player of the round as Padua, confronting 156, ran down the total with six overs to spare.

Tozer was so imposing, no other batsman in his side passed 18 runs.

It was a fabulous effort and Padua were lucky to have him.

Earlier in the day, Iona’s Harley Malpass’ run avalanche continued against Padua despite Padua trio Will Webster (4-33), Tozer (3-16) and Harry Thornton (1-18) combining to dismiss the visitors for 156.

Malpass batted for more than two hours in scoring 70, and along with an aggressive Hamish McKeon (38, 43 balls) got his team to 5-150.

But Padua’s stunning fightback saw them snare 5-6, with Webster poleaxing the lower order.

After taking the new ball Cameron Plackett (0-22, 7 overs) also did a good job and Padua did well to withstand the Malpass-McKeon recovery after Tozer had sent Iona’s innings subsiding to 4-41 early.

Malpass has not scored 116 not out, 87 not out and 70 in his last three AIC innings.

Padua responded cautiously against Lachlan Bragger and Archie Anderson.

At Marist College Ashgrove, St Peters Lutheran College looked winners having posted 192 and then reducing Ashgrove to 7-149, but Nickelson proved a matchwinner.

Along with Joey Laner (18) he added valuable runs before scrambling the tail to the victory target - all the while honing in on his own personal milestone of three figures.

Batting for 172 minutes, he richly deserved a hundred but he will hardly be disappointed with an exciting team victory first and foremost - particularly after scoring a 100 in a losing side last week.

Earlier, St Peters had started strongly to be 2-128 before the run out of Matt Harvie and the dismissal of Sree Bachu triggered a collapse.

Bachu scored an enterprising 49 from just 40 balls before Louis Morris claimed him, and then Wex ran out allrounder Harvie (39).

Flynn Cleary’s three wickets, and Frankie Piper run out of Bastien Walter then saw St Peters start treading water after Morris had bowled beautifully to snare 1-19 from 10 overs.

However, Noah Johnson (36, 37 balls) gave the innings energy again and Saints came to rest in the powerful position of 192.

Sinnott, Neredumilli, Dyer and Harvie all combined well with the ball for Saints.

MEETING THE MIGHTY CAPTAINS HERE

At Mayer Oval, Paddies’ Noah James scored a brisk 27 to lift his side over the top of St Laurence’s College.

St Patrick’s needed ever run to finish at 8-166 after the opposition had made 165.

Laurien’s Mackenzie Douglas took four wickets but it was Lachlan Wigan who claimed the prized scalp of St Patrick’s batting trump Steve Hogan, caught by Parker for 26.

St Patrick’s reached 2-77, but Wigan’s dismissal of Hogan, and Douglas’ ousting of top scorer Lachlan Allen (41) at 4-113 altered the flow of the clash.

Enter James who got St Patrick’s close enough, leaving Matthew Pereira and Ryan Jessep to scramble the winning runs.

Laurie’s bowlers had cast a big net defending their score.

It was a terrific team bowling effort as Xavier Santos (2-30), Evan Chamberlin, Vaseo, Douglas, Mohr and Wigan reeled in an exciting victory.

Earlier, Laurie’s pair Daniel Gray and Thomas Steinhouse rebuilt the Laurie’s innings after St Patrick’s had them 4-16 - and then Douglas delivered the goods with the ball.

With the glistening new ball in their hands, Steve Hogan (2-15, 10 overs) and Tom Smith (2-26) routed their opponents early, before Gray and Steinhouse got to work.

They added 119, with Gray 59 not out from 122 balls and Steinhouse dismissed for 58 (113 balls).

The total of 165 presented a formidable chase for Paddies who were best served at the bowling crease by Hogan, Smith, Matthew Pereira, Jessop and Matt Hartshorn.

Hogan took 2-15 from his 10 overs of off spin.

Villanova College had a big win over St Edmund’s College despite Eddies’ captain Ben Naish defying with 29 in an hour of batting.

Eddies made just 53 as Larry Clark (3-13), Thomas Rieck (2-18), Connor Moloney (2-2) and Jackson (1-9) and Zac Joyce (2-9) shared in the wickets.

The caught Moloney, bowled Moloney dismissal of Nash was the key, because before the brothers from Villa got involved, he was batting with authority.

Zac Joyce and Mitchell Francis then quickly got Villa to the victory target.
