Redcliffe organisers Grady Payne and Amare Wynyard blended together the perfect recipe of power and pace to help send their side hurtling to its round 2 win, 50-10, over Stretton State College.
The Eagles were at their imposing best through the ruck, eroding the Stretton defence with strength and leg speed.

Middle starting props Taufa Taulani and Lepo Teu, along with interchange king Jairus Suliasi and edge forward Marley Baker, provided the power. Around them No.11 Nate Berrigan, hooker and captain Wynyard and fullback James Grey generated the pace down the tram tracks.
Halfback Payne and Wynyard were the mixers throughout, running the show with aplomb.
In the modern game you just can’t beat speed down the middle running escort to the big boppers, and Redcliffe have two of the best in Berrigan and Grey.
Berrigan garnished his telling first-half performance around the ruck with two second half tries, once which came from 55m out.
Berrigan is a Rueben Cotter type whose pace places defence under intolerable pressure, while Grey’s speed is unmatched.
You’d pay good money to see Grey in full flight, just as spectators did today on the second half when he scored half the length of the field.
The match started with Redcliffe’s power lifting props Taulani and Teu crashing through Stretton’s castle gate, one of the tries of which was created by a super pass from half Payne.
Redcliffe’s other half, Ngaakau Graham, then sparked a golden try which featured lightning hands and support play by winger Holland Poto, centre Folau and finished by second rower Baker.
Toki-Mautairi also scored a try, coming onto the ball like he’d been fired out of a cannon.
Just as they did last weekend in defeat, Stretton fought to the line and conjured up one of the tries of the match, a superb 60m effort finished by hooker Bailey Vang after impressive winger Amon Tu’aefe had broken away.
In the first half Tu’aefe also scored an 80m intercept try, and he now has two long distance tries from as many matches.
PREVIEW
Redcliffe State High are determined to make Kayo Stadium their domain in 2025 and it all starts with their first home game of the season against Stretton State College on Wednesday.
The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a big double header including the Walters Cup clash between Redcliffe and Mountain Creek SHS.
The Eagles want to take advantage of the geographical, weather and atmosphere differences of the stadium which has become the spiritual home of the NRL Dolphins.
As a peninsula with water on three sides, Redcliffe has a country town vibe and also a holiday atmosphere where families revel in the great outdoors and partake in activities like fishing, boating, surf club activities and beach walks.
There is also a wind factor which consistently blows off Moreton Bay.
Redcliffe SHS rugby league excellence co-ordinator Jay Wilkinson said playing at a venue where the NRL players both train and play was also a motivating factor for the students.
“It takes you to another level,” Wilkinson said.
“It is a special kind of feeling and you never stop enjoying playing in those games at a stadium. You savour it.’’
Wilkinson said it was not uncommon to see NRL players standing on the sideline watching parts of the game.
“It gives the players that extra buzz. As an 18-year-old you still get excited when you see Isaiya Katoa or Herbie (Farnworth), who is a crowd favourite,” he said.
Wilkinson said entry of the Dolphins into the NRL and also the club fielding an Under-20 side - ironically coached by their school coach Scott Murray - was also a motivating factor because “there is a real pathway for the boys”.
Redcliffe will be determined to put their opening round loss to Keebra Park in the rearview mirror with a good performance against Stretton.
In a baptism of fire against Marsden SHS at Marsden last week, Stretton State College had a commendable start to their season in that they conceded 54 points across the opening 50 minutes, but gained parity in the final quarter of the game and finished with 10 points.
Stretton coach Rhys Jacks said there were green shoots across the game which was positive moving into round 2 against Redcliffe.
“We had some little wins, areas we were happy with and that showed what we are capable of and gave them confidence,’’ Jacks said.
But he said the key learning was to try and do those good things for longer.
Jacks was also impressed with his team’s fight. “That is the group we have,’’ he said.
“They had done it since Year 7. They are competitive. Their talent is that they are hard workers. They have had to work hard and it showed and will continue to show in the weeks ahead.’’
